    Abstract: Construction of a toroidal continuously-variable transmission is achieved that simplifies the manufacture of parts, management of parts and assembly work, is able to easily reduce costs, stabilizes speed change operations, and is processed easily. An outer ring 16b of a thrust rolling bearing is supported so as to be able to pivotally displace by engaging a concave section 24 that is provided on the outside surface of the outer ring 16b with a cylindrical convex surface 22 of a support beam 23a of a trunnion 7b. Displacement of the outer ring 16b in the axial direction of the support beam 23a is limited by engaging a concave groove 27 that is formed around the inside surface of the concave section 24 in the circumferential direction around the support beam 23a with a protrusion 28 that is formed around the outer-circumferential surface of the support beam 23a.

    Abstract: A toroidal type continuously variable transmission which maintains a gear ratio stably and continue to use the same gear ratio control even for a different model type of support shaft for supporting rotatably a power roller which differs in shaft diameter. A power roller 11 is rotatably supported by a displacement shaft 31 which protrudes from a trunnion 6 and a thrust ball bearing 39 provided between the power roller 11 and the trunnion 6. A secondary shaft portion 34 of the displacement shaft 31 is fittingly inserted into a hole 41a in an outer race 41 of the thrust ball bearing 39. A clearance between the hole 41a in the outer race 41 and the secondary shaft portion 34 is set in a range from 0 to 0.05 mm.

    Abstract: A trunnion of a toroidal-type continuously variable transmission has a support plate portion for supporting a displacement shaft and a pair of bent wall portions respectively bent toward the inner surface side of the support plate portion. The support plate portion and the pair of bent wall portions cooperates together in defining a pocket portion for storing a power roller therein. Pivot shafts are disposed concentrically with each other on the outer surfaces of the pair of bent wall portions. The pair of bent wall portions are connected together by a connecting member. The connecting member includes a pressure receive portion contactable with the inner surface of the pocket portion in a direction intersecting substantially at right angles to the thrust direction and receiving a pressing force acting on the pocket portion to crush the pocket portion.

Treated-surface layers for enhancing the endurance of the power roller bearing are formed individually on the respective surfaces of the raceway grooves. The treated-surface layers include super-finished surfaces with the surface roughness of 0.05 Rad or less, formed individually on the raceway grooves, and low-friction layers formed individually on the super-finished surfaces. Alternatively, the treated-surface layers include residual compression stress layers formed on the respective surface layer portions of the raceway grooves by shot-preening.

    Abstract: In the toroidal-type continuously variable transmission, the radial clearance of a second radial needle roller bearing 30 for supporting the power roller 8 on the periphery of the pivot shaft portion 26 of the displacement shaft 7 is set larger than the radial clearance of a first radial needle roller bearing 27 for supporting a support shaft portion 25 on a trunnion 6. By increasing the radial clearance of the second radial needle roller bearing 30 in this manner, an increase in the surface pressures in the contact portions between the rolling surfaces of needle rollers 32, 32 and the inner peripheral surface of the power roller 8 and the outer peripheral surface of the pivot shaft portion 26 can be restricted, thereby enhancing the durability of the toroidal-type continuously variable transmission. Also, by reducing the radial clearance of the first radial needle roller bearing 27, the inclination of the displacement shaft 7 is minimized, thereby stabilizing the rotation speed change operation thereof.
