  • Patent number: 5311591
Abstract: Method and apparatus are disclosed including a system monitor which limits the ability of a program about to be executed to the use of predefined resources (e.g., data files, disk writing capabilities, etc.). The system monitor processes a data structure including a set of authorities defining that which a program is permitted to do and/or that which the program is precluded from doing. The set of authorities and/or restrictions assigned to a program to be executed are referred to as "program authorization information" (or "PAI"). Once defined, the program authorization information is thereafter associated with at least one program to be executed to thereby delineate the resources and functions that the program is allowed to utilize and/or is not allowed to utilize. The PAI associated with a particular program may be assigned by a computer system owner/user or by someone who the computer system owner/user implicitly trusts.

  • Patent number: 5309495
Abstract: In x-ray fluorescence systems, the screening prevents the bringing of the measurement spot into the correct position in relation to the x-ray beam using the naked eye. The use of a television camera with a screen as well as illuminating devices makes the measuring system expensive and complicates the use of the system. According to the invention, this is avoided in that use is made of an illuminated device, which operates using an optical system and which reproduces, by convergent light beams at their intersection, the correct height position, lateral position and forward/rearward position of the measurement object when the tray carrying the measurement object has been moved to a forward position away from the x-ray beam.

  • Patent number: 5309221
Abstract: Methods for measuring the diameters of transparent filaments with high precision, e.g., RMS standard deviations of less than 0.02 microns, are provided. The methods involve determining the average spatial frequency .omega. of the far-field interference pattern produced by illuminating the filament with a beam of laser light. The average spatial frequency is determined by performing a fast Fourier transform (FFT) on the interference data to obtain a coarse estimate for the average and then performing a set of discrete sequence Fourier transforms (DSFTs) in the region of the coarse estimate to obtain the desired high precision estimate of the average. Efficient on-line processing procedures are provided so that real time measurements can be performed on, for example, a moving optical waveguide fiber, at rates of 500 measurements/second and above.

  • Patent number: 5306791
Abstract: Novel ethylene homopolymers and ethylene copolymers which are suitable for film production and have a density from 925 to 940 kg /m.sup.3, a melt flow index (MFI) of <1 g/10 min at 190.degree. C. and at an applied force of 2.16 kp can be prepared by free radical polymerization of the monomers at from 500 to 5000 bar and reaction temperatures T of from 40.degree. to 320.degree. C. by means of an initiator with virtually complete exclusion of oxygen in at least n=3 polymerization stages. In the first stage, the total amount or the predominant part of the monomers is subjected to the polymerization by means of part of the required initiator until the polymerization virtually comes to a stop. A further part of the initiator and, if required, of the monomers is then added to the mixture cooled to 20.degree.-60.degree. C. This process is repeated in the subsequent stages until the n th stage, at least the initiators used in the n th stage having a half-life temperature of from 90.degree. to 260.degree. C.

  • Patent number: 5306431
Abstract: Reduction of the nitrite content of aqueous solutions by treatment with hydrogen peroxide in the acidic pH range can be controlled by measurement of the redox potential. Contrary to the teaching of the prior art, addition of the hydrogen peroxide in the process according to the invention is terminated not at the highest redox potential, but only after lowering of the potential to a value of 650.+-.10 mV. In this way, nitrite contents below 1 mg/l can be obtained even when the solutions additionally contain fluctuating amounts of various compounds oxidizable by H.sub.2 O.sub.2.

  • Patent number: 5303996
Abstract: A cable or wire (information bus, power supply, etc.) retention method and apparatus for modular computer cabinets and the like in which the cabinet frame end walls have notch-like voids. The preferred embodiment for a cable retainer has a frame member with two cantilever portions, which frame member is spot-welded to several struts at other (non-cantilever) portions. The top and bottom struts protrude the frame member, and are longer than the distance between the cabinet end walls. The cable retainer is connected to the cabinet by inserting one pivoting strut tip into a receiving hole and causing the cantilever portion nearest the receiving hole to deform (causing deeper penetration of the inserted tip) so that a clearance is obtained between the other pivot end and its corresponding receiving hole, prior to releasing the cable retainer. Insertion is completed by pivoting the cable retainer to an upright position to latch the latching ends in cabinet end wall grooves.

  • Patent number: 5303698
Abstract: A medical ventilator is provided for providing continuous, closed-loop control of the pressure of gas within a patient's mouth or respiratory tract in accordance with any selected pressure input waveform. The medical ventilator comprises an adaptive, feedback controller which provides independent control of the inspiratory and expiratory branches of the ventilator, while continuously controlling mouth pressure. The digital coefficients of the controller are updated to adjust for variations in the resistance of the patient's respiratory tract resulting from the magnitude of flow of inspiratory gas into the tract and patient-to-patient differences. Pressure in the expiratory branch is controlled by controlling, through a pressure-regulating valve, the magnitude of back pressure applied to a diaphragm valve. A venturi provides a reference pressure for the pressure-regulating valve below that of the surrounding atmosphere to enable application of a negative back pressure to the diaphragm valve.

  • Patent number: 5304973
Abstract: A coil for electromagnetically actuating a switching device. The coil includes terminal connections retained in a coil flange for the coil where there are recesses in the flange to accommodate electrical components. The terminal connections are developed as a joint bar, and the joint bar serves as a mechanical holding device for one of the sides of two diodes of a rectifier bridge configured on opposite sides of the joint bar. The one side of the two diodes is soldered to the joint bar. These elements are inserted as a unit into the recesses of the coil flange.

  • Patent number: 5301749
Abstract: There is provided a dual pump floating layer recovery apparatus for pumping a floating layer of contaminant out of a well. The apparatus comprises an upper pump and a lower pump. The lower pump creates a cone of depression which increases the amount of the floating layer within the well. The upper pump pumps the contaminant from the well or cone of depression. The upper and lower pumps preferably are gas-actuated pumps. The lower pump preferably includes an automatic switching device to activate the lower pump upon sensing a predetermined amount of fluid within the pump. A gas conduit interconnects the actuation chambers on both pumps such that when the lower automatic pump is provided with pressurized gas, the upper pump is simultaneously provided with the identical pressurized gas. Upon deactivation, both pumps relieve the activation pressure through the lower pump.

  • Patent number: 5302860
Abstract: A circuit arrangement for automatic gain control of NRZ data signals. In this arrangement there is detected with the aid of two comparators whether a logic level in the NRZ data signal produced by a controllable amplifier is exceeded or fallen short of. The signals produced by the comparators are time-averaged with the aid of RC combinations and subjected to a logic AND combination. The signal available at the output of the AND combination is integrated in an integrator stage and transported as a control signal to a set input of the controllable amplifier.
