  • Publication number: 20140344174
Abstract: A quitting-intention estimating system facilitates detecting an entity's intention to quit an organization. During operation, the system obtains recent electronic-communication information associated with the entity under investigation, such as an employee of a corporation, or a volunteer of a non-profit organization. The system can determine the entity's quitting intention by determining a plurality of recent communication features from the electronic-communication information, for example, by using a variety of feature-extracting modules that extract the features from the entity's electronic communications. The system then computes a quitting-intention value for the entity under investigation, using a quitting-intention estimating function that takes the recent communication features as input.

  • Publication number: 20140317030
Abstract: A conversation-simulating system facilitates simulating an intelligent conversation with a human user. During operation, the system can receive a user-statement from the user during a simulated conversation, and generates a set of automatic-statements that each responds to the user-statement. The system then determines a set of behavior-characteristics for the user, and computes relevance scores for the automatic-statements based on the behavior-characteristics. Each relevance score indicates an outcome quality that the user is likely to perceive for the automatic-statement as a response to the user-statement. The system selects an automatic-statement that has a highest relevance score from the set of automatic-statements, and provides the selected automatic-statement to the user.

  • Publication number: 20140278272
Abstract: Automated fixture layout is approached in two distinct stages. First, the spatial locations of clamping points on the work piece are determined to ensure immobility of the fixtured part under any infinitesimal perturbation. Second, spatial locations are matched against a user-specified library of reconfigurable clamps to synthesize a valid fixture layout or configuration that includes clamps that are accessible and collision free. The spatial locations matching during the second stage can be the same spatial locations chosen in the first stage to ensure immobility, or a different set of spatial locations.

Abstract: A computer-implemented system and method for spontaneously identifying and directing motorists to available parking spaces is provided. Parking spaces are tracked to determine a status of each space. A destination of a user is received. At least one parking space is identified as available and near the destination of the user. An estimated arrival time of the user to the available parking space is determined. An arrival threshold is applied to the estimated arrival time of the user and a reservation offer for the available space is sent to the user when the estimated arrival time satisfies the arrival threshold.

  • Publication number: 20130223216
Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention provides a system for balancing loads between two physical resources. During operation, for each physical resource, the system establishes resource-usage models for a plurality of jobs that share the physical resource, identifies quality-of-service (QoS) levels associated with the jobs, and computes a QoS balance point for the physical resource based on the resource-usage models and the QoS ratings. The QoS balance point indicates a rating of QoS, above which substantial resource provisioning is required. In response to detecting a difference between a first QoS balance point associated with a first physical resource and a second QoS balance point associated with a second physical resource, the system identifies one or more jobs to be moved between the first and second physical resources such that the difference between the first and the second QoS balance points is reduced.

  • Publication number: 20130227584
Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention provides a system for provisioning physical resources shared by a plurality of jobs. During operation, the system establishes resource-usage models for the jobs, ranks the jobs based on quality of service (QoS) requirements associated with the jobs, and provisions the jobs for a predetermined time interval in such a way that any unused reservations associated with a first subset of jobs having higher QoS rankings are distributed to other remaining jobs with preference given to a second subset of jobs having a highest QoS ranking among the other remaining jobs. Provisioning the jobs involves making reservations for the jobs based on the resource-usage model and corresponding QoS requirements associated with the jobs.

  • Publication number: 20130185247
Abstract: A computer-implemented system and method for identifying tasks using temporal footprints is provided. A database of temporal footprints is maintained. Each temporal footprint is representative of a different task and includes one or more significant patterns of two or more sequential events. Events performed by one or more users are tracked. At least one pattern including sequential occurrences of two or more of the tracked events is identified. The identified pattern is compared to each of the significant patterns of the temporal footprints. A footprint score for the identified pattern is determined with respect to each temporal footprint. The task associated with the temporal footprint having the highest footprint score is assigned to the identified pattern.
