  • Patent number: 10561447
Abstract: The present invention provides spinous process implants and associated methods. In one aspect of the invention, the implant includes at least one extension with a superior lobe pivotally connected to an inferior lobe, such as by a hinge, to allow unfolding of the at least one extension from a folded position to an unfolded position. In certain aspects, the folding extension may include fasteners to facilitate engagement with the spinous processes to provide both a flexion stop as well as an extension stop. The fasteners may have corresponding bores to allow the fasteners to reside in the bores to provide a compact profile for implantation. In another aspect of the invention, the implant is introduced to the surgical site using a lateral or paramedian approach and associated tools to facilitate the same.

  • Publication number: 20190377350
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided herein for operating an autonomous vehicle in the presence of hazardous materials. The autonomous vehicle is operated in travel along a selected route. A determination is made, using a sensor, that a hazardous material is present inside the autonomous vehicle during the operation of the autonomous vehicle. In response, a setting of the autonomous vehicle is changed to counteract the presence of the hazardous material inside the autonomous vehicle. Additionally, also in response, a modified route is calculated, the modified route addressing the presence of the hazardous material inside the autonomous vehicle. Then, the autonomous vehicle is operated to travel along the modified route.

  • Publication number: 20190375409
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided herein for operating an autonomous vehicle. A destination is received from a user. A mode selection input is also received from a user. A selected route is determined based on the destination input. In response to determining that the mode selection input identifies a regular driving mode, the autonomous vehicle is operated to travel along the selected route in the regular driving mode. In the regular driving mode at least one capability of a first plurality of capabilities of the autonomous vehicle is enabled. Further, in response to determining that the selection of the mode identifies a guardian mode, the autonomous vehicle is operated to travel along the selected route in the guardian mode. In the guardian mode at least one capability of a first plurality of capabilities of the autonomous vehicle is disabled.

  • Publication number: 20190344457
Abstract: A knife includes a blade defining an aperture and a handle. The handle includes a body pivotably coupled to the blade, a catch movably coupled to the body, and a biasing member coupled to the body. The catch includes a protrusion. The biasing member is configured to apply a biasing force on the catch. The handle is selectively repositionable between a first position and a second position relative to the blade. The biasing force biases the protrusion of the catch toward the blade when the handle is in the first position. The protrusion is received by the aperture to prevent rotation of the handle relative to the blade when the handle is in the first position.

  • Publication number: 20190275680
Abstract: A robot comprises a first part and a second part moveable relative to the first part. The robot operates in an audio output mode in which the first and second parts are in a first configuration relative to each other and in which the robot outputs audio from an array of speakers using an audio output technique. The robot operates in a user interaction mode in which the first and second parts are in a second, different configuration relative to each other and in which the robot interacts with a user. The robot is configured to change from the audio output mode to the user interaction mode in response to the robot detecting a trigger event. Changing from the audio output mode to the user interaction mode comprises causing the first part to lift up relative to the second part.

  • Publication number: 20190216614
Abstract: A surgical instrument suitable for preparing an intervertebral disc space includes an outer sleeve, an instrument head, an inner shaft, a handle, a universal joint, a coupling member, and a drive mechanism. The outer sleeve includes a proximal end, a distal end and a longitudinal axis. The instrument head defines a longitudinal axis and is disposed at the distal end of the outer shaft. The inner shaft is slidably disposed within the outer sleeve and includes a proximal end, a distal end and a longitudinal axis coaxially aligned with the longitudinal axis of the outer sleeve. The drive mechanism is coupled between the outer sleeve and the inner shaft and actuates the outer sleeve axially relative to the inner shaft, thereby setting an angle of the longitudinal axis of the instrument head in relation to the longitudinal axis of the inner shaft.

  • Publication number: 20190094441
Abstract: A display device comprises first, second and third layers. The first layer is spaced apart from the second layer. The third layer is arranged between the first and second layers. The first layer comprises a display surface facing away from the second layer. The display surface is arranged to provide a display output. The second layer comprises a plurality of light-emitting elements. The third layer of the display device comprises a plurality of discrete guide channels. Each guide channel in the plurality of guide channels is arranged to guide light travelling from a respective light-emitting element in the plurality of light-emitting elements to the display surface. Different guide channels in the plurality of guide channels have different channel lengths.

  • Publication number: 20190039467
Abstract: Approaches for charging a battery for an electric vehicle involve obtaining battery usage metrics of the battery of the electric vehicle based upon past usage of the battery and past charging of the battery. The metrics are analyzed to determine a target state of charge (SOC) for a first type of vehicle usage and determine a charging scheme as a function of time to achieve the target SOC at a first predetermined time. The charging scheme includes a first time period and a subsequent second time period, wherein an average rate of delivering charge to the battery during the second time period is greater than an average rate of delivering charge to the battery during the first time period. The battery is charged according to the charging scheme until the battery reaches the target SOC, which is less than a maximum state of charge for the battery.

The first extension has a spacer extending from a medial lacing side along a longitudinal axis. The second extension has an aperture that slidingly receives the spacer. Accordingly, the second extension is moveable relative to the spacer along the longitudinal axis. The second extension includes a threaded bore in communication with the aperture. A set screw is threadably received in the threaded bore of the second extension. The set screw can be tightened against an outer surface of the spacer to lock the second extension in place relative to the longitudinal axis.
