A station may listen using a wakeup radio for a wakeup message during wakeup listening periods according to the identified jitter pattern. A station may receive a preamble having a first bandwidth and a wakeup message having a second bandwidth. An AP may transmit an identifier key to a station, and the station may determine a rotating identifier associated with the AP based on the received identifier key. The station may receive a wakeup message from the AP, compare a sender identifier with the rotating identifier, and power on a second radio. A station may also receive a wakeup message that includes an indication of which station are to be activated.

Particularly, a wireless device may await reception of a synchronizing beacon message from a transmitting device. A relative position identifier within the synchronizing beacon message may then allow the wireless device to anticipate future beacon message transmissions and to synchronize its reception pattern with the transmitter. In this manner the wireless device need only receive and decode beacon messages germane to its operation.

Each synchronization signal is received according to a slot-skipping transmit schedule of the wake-up transmitter. The low-power protocol circuitry also includes a low-power processor configured to synchronize a clock of the wake-up receiver to a clock of the wake-up transmitter based on at least one of the synchronization signals.

The apparatus generally includes a processing system configured to determine a period that at least one second apparatus is scheduled to be awake, generate a first frame for transmission to the second apparatus during the period, determine ranging information based on a time difference between transmission of the first frame and receipt of a second frame in response to the first frame, and generate a third frame including the ranging information; a transmit interface configured to output the first and third frames for transmission; and a receive interface configured to obtain the second frame. By exchanging ranging information in already scheduled wake-up periods and in existing frame, power consumption and signaling overhead may be reduced.
