  • Patent number: 5554148
Abstract: Refillable immunoisolatory neurological therapy devices for local and controlled delivery of a biologically active factor to the brain of a patient. The devices include a cell chamber adapted for infusion with nsecretory cells and having at least one semipermeable or permselective surface across which biologically active factors secreted by the cells can be delivered to the brain. The devices also include means for introducing secretory cells into the cell chamber, and means for renewing the cells or cell medium.

  • Patent number: 5395034
Abstract: A linear surgical stapling instrument includes a magazine for holding a plurality of undeformed surgical staples, and an upper jaw carrying the magazine and having opposed distal and proximal ends. An anvil is formed with staple-deforming pockets, and a lower jaw carries the anvil and has opposing distal and proximal ends respectively configured to mate with the distal and proximal ends of the upper jaw thereby to place the magazine and the anvil in confronting relation. A staple driver is carried in the upper jaw for driving staples held therein toward the anvil. Further, the upper and lower jaws are configured such that, when their respective distal and proximal ends are mated, a gap exists between the jaws in an intermediate region between their respective distal and proximal ends.

  • Patent number: 4562839
Abstract: An instrument for applying clips to a surgical site has an applicator with two jaws which are movable between open and closed positions. A mechanism is provided for feeding the respectively leading clip of a string of such clips between the jaws, whereupon the jaws are closed and the leading clip is cinched as it is being applied to the surgical site. To vary the presentation of the clip, i.e., its orientation relative to the surgical site, the mechanism is mounted so that it can turn about a longitudinal axis of the instrument. In one embodiment, a slide button is provided which can be slid forward and backward with one finger of a user, such translatory movement of the button being converted into a turning movement of the mechanism and consequently also of the clip which is being held between the anvils preparatory to its application to the surgical site. In another embodiment, turning movement is effected by rotating a knob secured to the mechanism.
