  • Publication number: 20110311324
Abstract: A metal cutting system with a tool holder, a shim, an insert with a top depression, a top piece and a clamp. A rake face cooling channel for fluid delivery is formed between the top piece and the depression in the insert. A primary discharge slot at the end of the rake face cooling channel delivers fluid from below the cutting edge of the insert. A second cooling channel for delivery of fluid to the flank face is formed between the insert and the shim or is formed between the shim and the tool holder with a portion of the cooling channel passing through the shim.

  • Publication number: 20110020073
Abstract: A cutting assembly that is useful in an operation for chipforming removal of material from a workpiece. The cutting assembly includes a holder having a seat and containing a coolant delivery passage. A locking pin, which has a longitudinal locking pin bore, is affixed to the seat so the longitudinal locking pin bore is in communication with the coolant delivery passage. A cutting insert has a rake surface, a corner cutting edge region, a central cutting insert aperture, and a radial coolant trough with an orientation toward the corner cutting edge region. At least a portion of the locking pin is within the central cutting insert aperture. A clamp assembly attaches to the holder and engages the cutting insert. The clamp assembly has a diverter plate, which has a bottom surface defining a diverter bowl and a diverter channel.

  • Publication number: 20110020072
Abstract: A cutting insert-shim assembly that has a cutting insert with a bottom surface and a plurality of interior coolant passages wherein each interior coolant passage has a coolant inlet in the bottom surface of the cutting insert. The shim has a first side surface and a second side surface and contains a cavity, which communicates with the coolant conduit. The cavity defines a first opening in the first side surface and a second opening in the second side surface. When the shim is in a first condition, the first side surface contacts the bottom surface of the cutting insert and the first opening provides a first level of coolant communication to the interior coolant passages in the cutting insert. When the shim is in a second condition, the second side surface contacts the bottom surface of the cutting insert and the second opening provides a second level of coolant communication to the interior coolant passages in the cutting insert.

  • Patent number: 7802945
Abstract: A milling cutter (10) comprises a cutter body (12) having at least two operational annular rings (13, 14). An outer ring (13) is provided for rough milling and includes a plurality of cutting inserts spaced about the periphery of the cutter body. Positioned radially inward of the outer ring (13) is at least one ring (14) comprises a coating of abrasive material. As a result, a workpiece can be both tough and finish milled by a single milling cutter (10) with the rough cutting inserts (18) and the abrasive material.

  • Patent number: 7625157
Abstract: A cutting insert assembly for use in chipforming and material removal wherein the cutting insert assembly is received in a pocket of a cutter body wherein coolant can flow out of a pocket opening contained in the pocket. The cutting insert assembly includes a cutting insert body that presents at least two discrete cutting locations. The cutting insert body contains a coolant entry passage aligned with the pocket opening for coolant to flow through the coolant entry passage. The cutting insert body has a rake surface that contains at least two of the discrete depressions wherein each one of the discrete depressions corresponds to one of the cutting locations. Each one of the discrete depressions extends toward its corresponding cutting location. The assembly includes a diverter that is positioned adjacent to the cutting insert body wherein the diverter has a receiving opening aligned with the coolant entry passage to receive coolant through the coolant entry passage.
