  • Patent number: 6889034
Abstract: Multiple radio channel frequency signals that are modulated with respective information modulation are transmitted from a common antenna at multiple radio frequencies. Multiple modulators are provided, a respective one of which corresponds to a respective one of the radio channel frequencies. Each modulator generates at least one constant amplitude, phase modulated drive signal at the corresponding radio channel frequency from the respective information modulation, such that the at least one constant amplitude, phase modulated drive signal corresponds to the information modulation for the corresponding radio frequency. At least one saturated power amplifier is provided for each of the at least one constant amplitude, phase modulated drive signals. A respective saturated power amplifier is responsive to the corresponding constant amplitude, phase modulated drive signal, to produce a corresponding amplified output signal at an output thereof.

  • Patent number: 6868270
Abstract: A method of operating a mobile terminal providing wireless communications can include receiving communications service from a first communications network providing service over a first coverage area. While receiving communications service from the first communications network, a first identity code can be received from a second communications network providing service over a plurality of second coverage areas wherein a first one of the second coverage areas includes the first coverage area and wherein the first identity code from the second communications network identifies availability of service with the second communications network in the first one of the second coverage areas. • Patent number: 6829226
Abstract: A method for controlling the transmit power level of a mobile terminal in a satellite communication system includes both a closed-loop element and an open-loop element. For the closed-loop element, the base station calculates the mobile terminal's power setting based on the strength of the signals received from the mobile terminal. The base station takes into account the propagation delays of the satellite system in determining the mobile terminal's transmit power setting. The open-loop element of the power control method allows the mobile terminal to adjust its own transmit power level from frame to frame based on the strength of the received signals from the base station. The strength of the signal received from the base station in each frame is compared to the strength of the signal received in the previous frame. The transmit power level of the mobile terminal is then adjusted inversely in accordance with variations in the observed signal strength.

  • Publication number: 20040038682
Abstract: A mobile station assists the wireless network with handover from a first base station to a second base station. The mobile station receives transmissions from the first base station using a first spreading code corresponding to the first base station while receiving signals from at least one other base station. The mobile station determines the relative signal strengths of the signals received from the other base stations and reports the relative signal strengths to the first base station to support handover determinations by the wireless network.

  • Patent number: 6697441
Abstract: Received signals are decoded based on a coupling between bits of the received signals introduced by the channel over which the signal is transmitted or by the transmitter which transmitted the signals. For example, in a higher-order modulation scheme, such as 8-PSK, individual bits grouped in a given symbol are generally coupled rather than fully independent. Accordingly, decoding information on a first one of the bits processed through a forward error correction decoder may be used to adjust the soft information from a demodulator for one or more of the other bits contained in the same symbol for use in processing those bits through the forward error correction decoder. Particularly where interleaving is utilized, a first bit may be processed through the decoder before the soft information on another of the bits is needed, thereby allowing an intermediate decision soft value for the first bit to be used in generating the input value to the decoder for the subsequent bit.

  • Publication number: 20030092456
Abstract: Coherent transmit macro-diversity involves transmitting simultaneous signals from one or more transmitters to one or more wireless receivers. Transmit signals are formed as weighted combinations of the individual information signals for each of the wireless receivers. By properly weighting these receiver-specific signals, the combined signals combine at each receiver to cancel all but the desired information signal for that receiver. This improves reception performance and allows multiple receivers to operate on the same communication channel in the same area if desired. The weighting factors used to form the combined signals are based on propagation path characteristics between each of the transmit antennas and each of the receivers. This information is generally referred organized as a channel estimate matrix and is used to filter the information signals such that they may be combined in the required weighted combinations.

  • Patent number: 6553229
Abstract: Multiple-mode cellular radiotelephones use a wide bandwidth receiving mode while scanning for signals in a narrow bandwidth receiving mode. Thus, when it is desired to scan the received frequency band to search for the presence of narrowband signals, the wider receiver bandwidth is first selected. When significant signal energy is identified in the wider bandwidth, a further scan using the narrowband mode may then be provided in order to locate the narrow bandwidth channel containing the strongest signal. In another embodiment, the signals that are received in the wider bandwidth mode are digitized to obtain complex signal samples. The complex signal samples are then processed to determine energy in each of a plurality of narrower bandwidths corresponding to channels in the narrower bandwidth cellular radiotelephone standards.

  • Patent number: 6369651
Abstract: Bidirectional Direct Current (DC) power conversion circuits and methods transfer DC power in a forward direction from a first terminal at a first voltage to a second terminal at a second voltage, wherein the first voltage is higher than the second voltage relative to a common voltage at a common terminal, and in a reverse direction from the second terminal at the second voltage to the first terminal at the first voltage. These bidirectional DC power conversion circuits and methods use an inductor having first and second inductor ends, a first switch that is connected between the first terminal and the first inductor end, to define a node therebetween, and a second switch that is connected between the node and the common terminal, wherein the second inductor end is connected to the second terminal.

  • Patent number: 6311046
Abstract: An input signal of varying amplitude and varying phase is converted into more than two signals of constant amplitude and controlled phase. Each of the more than two signals of constant amplitude and controlled phase is then separately amplified in separate amplifiers. The separately amplified more than two signals of constant amplitude and controlled phase are then combined to produce an output signal that is an amplification of the input signal at the desired power level. When converting the input signal into more than two signals, the phase of each of the more than two signals of constant amplitude and controlled phase is controlled to produce the output signal that is an amplification of the input signal at the desired power level. According to another aspect, a signal of varying amplitude and varying phase is generated from a plurality of constant amplitude varying phase signals, the sum of which is the signal of varying amplitude and varying phase.

  • Patent number: 6285251
Abstract: A signal of varying amplitude in a first saturated power amplifier that operates from a fixed voltage power supply to produce a first output signal of constant amplitude. The signal of varying amplitude also is amplified in a second saturated power amplifier that operates from a modulated voltage power supply, to produce a second output signal of amplitude that depends on the signal of varying amplitude, a modulated power supply voltage, and on an invert/noninvert control signal. The first and second output signals are combined into a load. The modulated voltage power supply is modulated while generating the invert/noninvert control signal, such that the combined first and second output signals into the load amplify the signal of varying amplitude. The signal of varying amplitude also may be of varying amplitude and varying phase.

  • Patent number: 6278867
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for frequency generation suitable for use in wireless devices capable of operating at multiple frequencies. Such systems may change the loop gain of an automatic frequency control loop based on the operating frequency of the wireless device. Furthermore, such a frequency dependent loop gain may be carried out by the selection of subroutines with differing loop gains associated with the subroutines. Furthermore, the loop gain may also be temperature compensated based on the temperature of the wireless device and/or the operating frequency of the device.

  • Patent number: 6256514
Abstract: A secure radio personal communication system and method includes a base station which relays cellular verification signals between a wide area cellular network and a cellular terminal via the wire telephone network. Thus, cellular telephone calls which are routed to a cellular terminal via a base station, when the cellular terminal is within a local region covered by the base station, may be exchanged between the cellular network and cellular terminal over the wire telephone network. Calls from the wide area cellular network which are routed through the base station can thus employ the same security systems and methods which are employed by the wide area cellular network. Signals between the base station and the cellular terminal are preferably exchanged when the cellular terminal is parked in the base station. Verification and encryption signals may be exchanged.
