  • Publication number: 20070063753
Abstract: The instantaneous value of an intermediate waveform I is the instantaneous value of a unipolar waveform U multiplied through amplification by an upscaling factor UF of 1.5. A plateau value P is subtracted from the intermediate value I, and the result of this subtraction is multiplied by a multiplication factor MF of 0.6. The result of the multiplication is added to the plateau value P, which sum becomes an auxiliary waveform A. During the fall-below periods F, the value of a combined waveform C is arranged to follow whichever is the highest of the auxiliary value A and the plateau value P. Outside the fall-below periods, the value of the combined waveform C follows whichever is the highest of the unipolar value U and the plateau value P. This combined waveform C has, for a given plateau level P, a narrower fall-below window. Phase-chopping thus has an effect on the power of the output signal over a greater range of the cycle than can be provided by the corresponding prior art arrangement.

  • Patent number: 7193772
Abstract: A thermal nonlinear cell and method. The cell includes a substantially planar nonlinear medium and a mechanism for removing thermal energy from the medium in a direction substantially orthogonal to said medium. In one embodiment, the mechanism for removing thermal energy is a thermally conductive window mounted adjacent to the medium. Preferably, the mechanism includes plural thermally conductive windows between which the nonlinear medium is disposed. In the best mode, the windows are sapphire and the nonlinear medium is a fluid. The windows and the medium are transmissive with respect to first and second beams that interfere with each other and create an interference pattern in the cell. The interference pattern is sampled by a sampling hologram created within the multiple layers of the medium. The interference pattern is used via a sampling hologram to create a phase conjugate of a signal beam. The windows move thermal energy from the medium in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis of the medium.

  • Publication number: 20060294459
Abstract: The system for end-to-end content publishing using XML with an object dependency graph is based on the following two design principles: First, separation of content and style: Information stored in the content management system is independent on how it is going to be presented. The presentation style is encapsulated elsewhere and can be used to customize the look and feel based on the end-user preferences as well as the delivery methods and devices. Second, reusability of information content: By encapsulating common information in fragments and subfragments and making these fragments insertable in other fragments, thereby avoid scattering and duplication of information. This enables a user to restrict the edit operations to a limited number of relevant fragments, to affect global changes. In addition, the present invention provides data consistency and data integrity in the content management.

  • Publication number: 20060116506
Abstract: A novel class of thermal hysteresis (antifreeze) proteins (THP) that have up to 100 times the specific activity of fish antifreeze proteins has been isolated and purified from the mealworm beetle, Tenebrio molitor. Internal sequencing of the proteins, leading to cDNA cloning and production of the protein in bacteria has confirmed the identity and activity of the 8.4 to 10.7 kDa THP. They are novel Thr- and Cys-rich proteins composed largely of 12-amino-acid repeats of cys-thr-xaa-ser-xaa-xaa-cys-xaa-xaa-ala-xaa-thr. At a concentration of 55 ?g/mL, the THP depressed the freezing point 1.6° C. below the melting point, and at a concentration of ˜1 mg/mL the THP or its variants can account for the 5.5° C. of thermal hysteresis found in Tenebrio larvae. The THP function by an adsorption-inhibition mechanism and produce oval-shaped ice crystals with curved prism faces.

  • Publication number: 20050252599
Abstract: The present invention is a method and apparatus conveying a roll of liner stock bearing removably adhered components such as labels. The liner is pulled through the feeder by a capstan drive having opposed fluted nip rollers driven by a stepper motor. Advance of the stepper motor is controlled by a programmable electronic controller. The linered labels are led through a tensioner and around an acute-angle peeler edge which separates the labels from the liner. The peeling action advances a label onto a platform comprising a bed of rollers having an inherently low-adherence surface. Preferably the rollers are undercut to form circumferential ridges and reduce the surface area in contact with the label adhesive and to minimize adherence thereto. When peeling of a label is completed, the label has been advanced onto the roller bed to precisely the proper location for acquisition by a pick-and-place machine.

  • Publication number: 20050221391
Abstract: A method for identifying a desired binding agent that interferes with the interaction between a protein, protein fragment, polypeptide or a peptide and a binding surrogate. The method comprises combining the protein, protein fragment, polypeptide or peptide, the binding surrogate and a binding agent. Detecting a decrease in the interaction between the protein, protein fragment, polypeptide or peptide from the binding surrogate indicates that the binding agent interferes with the interaction. Proteins useful in the method include the tau protein phosphorylated at threonine (231), the Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP) phosphorylated at threonine (668 and cdc25 phosphorylated at threonine (48). Compounds identified by the method are useful in the treatment of Alzheimers' disease and cancer.
