Patent number: 5649482Abstract: An apparatus for the print throw-on and throw-off of the rubber blanket cylinder in the printing unit of a sheet-fed offset printing machine is described. For the throw-on and throw-off of the rubber blanket cylinder in relation to the impression cylinder and to the plate cylinder, the rubber blanket cylinder is mounted pivotably on both sides in eccentric bearings. The pivoting of the eccentric bearings takes place via two individually switchable actuating means, a print regulation mechanism being connected in series up from the actuating means. The two actuating means act on the eccentric bearings via a ternary member for the pivoting of the eccentric bearings, this arrangement selected in this way making it possible, in the case of larger thicknesses of printing material, to throw off the rubber blanket cylinder only from the plate cylinder. The print throw-off and throw-on thus causes lower torque jolts because of the smaller pivoting travel.Type: GrantFiled: April 8, 1996Date of Patent: July 22, 1997Assignee: Man Roland Druckmaschinen AGInventors: Peter Hummel, Robert Ortner, Helmut Schild

Patent number: 5113762Abstract: A mounting device is provided for an ink duct of a printing press wherein the ink duct is supported primarily on the press frame so as to be pivotally movable with respect to a ductor roller. The ink duct carries a first guide roller which engages the ductor roller in substantially the same plane as the ink metering elements disposed in the ink duct and the ink duct carries a second guide roller which engages the ductor roller substantially vertically above its center line. A link pivoted to the ink duct carries a third guide roller which is normally biased into engagement with the ductor roller at a position disposed from the first guide roller by at least 180.degree. measured peripherally around the ductor roller through the second guide roller. An unlocking mechanism swings the third guide roller out of engagement with the ductor roller so as to permit pivotal movement of the ink duct and guide rollers away from the ductor roller.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 1991Date of Patent: May 19, 1992Assignee: MAN Roland Druckmaschinen AGInventors: Paul Abendroth, Joachim Herzel, Peter Hummel, Robert Ortner, Joachim Steuer, Achim Stoffler, Janko Despot

Patent number: 4831928Abstract: A mounting for changing or laterally reciprocatable inking, damping, or like applicator rolls of a printing press, which rolls are driven by a friction roll in engagement therewith. The changing applicator rolls each have their spindles mounted outside of the roll shell for rotational and axial movement in roller locks. Axial travel is limited by a shoulder ring in the roller lock, the ring cooperating with the outer race of a roller bearing which supports the roll spindle for relative rotational movement within the roller lock. Each roller lock also is mounted so as to be axially locatable in different positions for achieving desired axial movement of the applicator roll, or for preventing spreading movement of the applicator roll entirely.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 1987Date of Patent: May 23, 1989Inventors: Herbert Rebel, Peter Hummel

Patent number: 4813353Abstract: A sheet gripper for a rotary press is provided having a hooked gripper finger pivotably connected at its lower end to a clamping element, and a roller disposed upon the gripper finger is biased against the guiding surfaces of a finger support element to ensure smooth changes from open and closed gripper finger positions, substantially without any vibrational motion or displacement resulting in the plane of sheet motion. Preferably, a compression spring is mounted in the clamping element to bias the roller against the gripper support element, the element having a rectilinear guide surface disposed substantially perpendicularly to a retaining surface, and a cam surface which extends upwardly and inclined outwardly from the rectilinear guide surface. Upon oscillation of the gripper shaft, the roller is guided along the rectilinear guide surface and cam surface, thereby defining accurate gripper finger motion.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 1987Date of Patent: March 21, 1989Inventors: Rudolf Raab, Manfred Herold, Peter Hummel

Patent number: 4712475Abstract: An inking roller for an offset printing machine, through the interior of which a temperature-control medium flows. The roller is formed of aluminum in a barrel shape with journals mounted at both ends. The cross-sections of the plurality of ducts formed in the wall of the barrel result in an optimally uniform surface temperature for the inking roller. On one side of the inking roller the ducts have openings so that the flow and return alternate inside the barrel. The opposite ends of the ducts communicate with openings which establish the counter flow of fluid through the barrel.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 1986Date of Patent: December 15, 1987Assignee: M.A.N.-Roland Druckmaschinen AktiengesellschaftInventors: Klemens Kemmerer, Peter Hummel

Patent number: 4711175Abstract: An inking unit disposed in the ink duct of a printing press includes dispensing elements for regulating the quantity of ink dispensed on the duct roller of the press and includes a plurality of blades disposed on linear adjusters for movement in the plane passing through the longitudinal axis B of the quantity-regulating dispensing elements and the line of contact between the dispensing edge thereof and the duct roller. Each blade is secured to a retaining pin on the adjuster by way of a securing aperture disposed perpendicularly to its bearing surface, and only minimal clearance, which can be very reduced in the direction of movement, is left between the pin and the securing aperture, so that when the ink gap closes, the blade of a dispensing element can automatically be aligned parallel by the dispensing edge bearing on the surface of the duct roller.Type: GrantFiled: February 4, 1986Date of Patent: December 8, 1987Assignee: M.A.N.-Roland Druckmaschinen AktiengesellschaftInventors: Peter Hummel, Joachim Steuer

Patent number: 4567823Abstract: The dampening unit of a rotary printing press is provided with additional transmission components and a swiveling stop mechanism so that the dampening unit can also apply a varnish having an arbitrary viscosity. For applying dampening solution to the plate cylinder (5) of the rotary press, the dampening unit has a fountain roller (13) feeding a transfer roller (15) and an applicator roller (16) which are driven by the press drive. When the dampening unit is used as a varnishing unit, clutches (28, 29) are enabled and disabled so that the transfer roller (15) is driven by a separate drive (17) which rotates the fountain roller (13). The applicator roller (16) is selectively thrown off by pneumatic actuators (32, 35) in such a way that all rollers (14-16) of the dampening unit are connected to each other and can be driven by the separate drive (17). A third position is also defined wherein the applicator roller (16) is also selectively thrown off 5/10 mm from the transfer roller (15).Type: GrantFiled: September 10, 1984Date of Patent: February 4, 1986Assignee: M.A.N.-Roland Druckmaschinen AktiengesellschaftInventors: Peter Hummel, Herbert Rebel

Patent number: 4534290Abstract: An ink dispensing system for a printing press having an ink trough of a fountain roller and comprising a plurality of radially oriented ink spreader assemblies arranged closely side-by-side to form a substantially continuous metering edge for zonal metering of a film of ink on the fountain roller as it rotates. Each printer assembly includes a bearing member and a dispensing member, the bearing member having a tip of narrow dimension and the dispensing member having a film-forming edge. Each bearing member is biased so that its tip rides in contact with the surface of the roller to establish a positional reference for adjustment of the dispensing member. An adjusting screw mounted on the bearing member and engaging the dispensing member is adapted to retract the dispensing member a small distance rearwardly of the tip of the bearing member to thereby determine the zonal thickness of the ink film formed on the surface of the roller by the dispensing member.Type: GrantFiled: March 23, 1984Date of Patent: August 13, 1985Assignee: M.A.N.-Roland Druckmaschinen AktiengesellschaftInventors: Peter Schroder, Fred Kunkel, Peter Hummel
