  • Patent number: 6368016
Abstract: A self-propelled concrete finishing trowel has a power steering control system that steers the machine by tilting the driven shaft(s) of the rotor assembly or assemblies of the machine without requiring the imposition of fatiguing actuating forces by the machine's operator. The steering control system includes at least one electric actuator, such as a ball screw actuator, coupled to each rotor assembly of the machine and controlled by an operator-manipulated controller. The controller preferably includes at least one, and possibly two, joysticks that can be manipulated by the operator to steer the machine in the direction of joystick motion and preferably at a speed that is proportional to the magnitude of joystick movement. In the typical case in which the machine is steered by pivoting a gearbox of at least one rotor assembly about two axes, a separate actuator is provided for each axis of gearbox pivoting.

  • Patent number: 6250844
Abstract: A concrete finishing trowel has one or more driven rotor assemblies coupled to an engine or other power source of the machine by a novel torque transfer system including at least one flexible shaft and possibly including a variable speed ratio torque converter assembly. The flexible shaft, preferably comprising a flexible wound wire shaft, bends to accommodate tilting movement of the associated rotor assembly that occurs upon a steering operation, thereby eliminating the need for high-maintenance universal joints or other, less durable equipment. The torque converter assembly, preferably taking the form of a pair of variable speed clutches each having variable diameter sheaves, permits the speed and torque ratios of the drive system to change with increases in engine speed so that the same machine can be effectively used for both low speed/high torque floating operations and for high speed burning operations.

  • Patent number: 6052947
Abstract: A window regulator mechanism comprises an elongated guide rail member mounted within a vehicle door. A window moving structure engages the window panel and is slidably mounted on the guide rail member to allow the window panel to be moved generally vertically with respect to the vehicle door. An actuating mechanism slidably moves the window moving structure along the guide rail member. An elongated, flexible counterbalancing member applies a counterbalancing force to the window panel that opposes a force of gravity acting on the window panel. The counterbalancing member has a first end attached within the door, a second end attached to the window moving structure, and an intermediate portion extending over a guiding portion disposed above an uppermost position of the window moving structure.

  • Patent number: 5351298
Abstract: A public key cryptographic system uses Lucas functions as the basis for encoding and decoding messages. An encoding device and a decoding device are linked by a communication channel. The first device is able to be actuated by some message to be transmitted, M, as well as an encryption key, E, so as to form a cryptogram, C, so that C can be sent over the communication channel to a decoding device. The encryption key, E, is a pair of positive whole numbers, e and N, which match the decryption key, D, of the second decoding device. The message M must usually be broken down into blocks, M.sub.i, such that each is greater than or equal to zero and less than or equal to N-1. N is a composite number--i.e. it is made up of at least two prime numbers, p and q, such that N=p.multidot.q. The cryptographic transformation done by the encoding device can be described using the notation of Lucas functions. It is, for each ith block of message M which produces a matching ith block of the cryptogram C:C.sub.i =V.sub.e (M.

  • Patent number: 5311629
Abstract: An improved article and method for making and installing a bridge deck replacement system. Subsystem articles include a plurality of precast slabs which contain features, notably projections and plates which depend from the underside thereof, which are used to form both haunch forms/molds and grout engaging devices. When used in conjunction with the conventional and preestablished supporting structure subsystem, the slabs, though use of the various devices included and/or depending therefrom, non-shrink grouting and the improved method of installation, are securable thereto and, yet, may be severally and/or discretely removed at a later time and replaced with new slabs. The replacement facility is obtained concomitant with the attainment of an overall system having a truly composite action in that slabs and support structure subsystems function as a singular unit.

  • Patent number: 5186438
Abstract: The subject invention provides a rock catchment barrier comprising a plurality of modules. Each module comprises a concrete base having a top surface, a post, a concrete barrier, an aperture for connecting the post to the top surface of the concrete base, a connector for connecting the concrete barrier to either side of the concrete base, and a fence panel for catching rocks, the fence panel being attachable to the post, wherein when the concrete base is connected to the concrete barrier, and the post is connected to the concrete base and the fence panel for catching rocks, a resulting module is formed. The rock catchment barrier provides protection for use in a rock excavation or scaling site where there is a need to stop rocks which are projected away from the site, such as when the rock excavation or scaling site is adjacent to a flow to traffic.

  • Patent number: 5172800
Abstract: High speed turning of elongate confectionery bars through 90.degree. is executed in two stages. The bars are turned through an acute angle in a first stage by a timed blast of air from an air jet while the bar are in flight between first and second conveyors and through a further acute angle by a pair of diverging differential speed conveyors. The timing of the air blast is achieved by detecting the leading edge of the bar by sensors prior to projection. The orientation of the bar is checked by further sensors after initial transfer to the differential speed conveyors, and the relative speeds of those conveyors is adjusted if necessary to complete the turn.
