  • Patent number: 9451890
Abstract: An integrated vectorcardiogram (VCG) device having 3 pairs of electrodes placed in three orthogonal directions with the capability to continuously measure the electrical activity of the heart. All of the electrode pairs may be contained within a single miniaturized housing thereby eliminating the need for cumbersome wires required with current 12-lead ECG systems, while providing the same amount and quality of information as the 12-lead ECG system. The integrated VCG device also includes a communications function to allow the data collected by the electrodes to be transmitted wirelessly to a remote device, such as a pacemaker, to control its function or to a remote monitoring station for continuous real-time patient monitoring.

  • Publication number: 20160140427
Abstract: A scanner (200) is arranged to detect a unique spectral signature acquired from a sample (230) coded with a security marker (700) made up from one or more overt or covert coloured features (704a-704b) having known and uniquely identifiable spectral characteristics. More particularly, a narrowband light source (218), operating in the middle/near ultraviolet to short/near infra-red wavelength ranges, pulses light onto the security marker fixed to or formed in the sample (230). A lens system (222, 216) collects spectral data for analysis by a processing engine (201), such as a smartphone. The light source (218), which may be an array of differently coloured LEDs (224), selectively illuminates the security marker with discrete wavelengths as LEDs are selectively energized. The coloured features (704a-704d) are realized by combinations of dyes, pigments or inks that may fluoresce that are difficult to replicate and therefore typically pantone-based. The coloured features each have unique spectral responses, i.e.

  • Publication number: 20160038484
Abstract: Methods for treating Down syndrome and improving cognitive function of a patient with an intellectual disability are disclosed. 5-hydroxytryptamine sub-receptor six (5-HT 6) receptor antagonists are provided for improving the cognition of a Down syndrome patient. Through the use of a mouse model of DS, the Ts65Dn mouse, we disclose evidence herein that 5-HT 6 receptor antagonists may alleviate the cognitive deficits observed in human subjects suffering from DS. Species within the claimed genus of 5-HT6 receptor antagonists restored the cognitive function of Ts65Dn mice almost to the level of control mice as demonstrated by an improved ability to differentiate between a familiar object in a familiar location and a novel object in a novel location. Consequently, the data disclosed herein support the claimed use of 5-HT 6 receptor antagonists for the treatment of cognitive deficits associated with DS.

  • Patent number: 8986262
Abstract: A sampling connector for use in sampling a body fluid such as arterial blood or cerebrospinal fluid. The sampling connector comprises at least two apertures in fluid communication via a fluid flow conduit and a one-way valve (14) disposed to allow fluid flow from the first aperture, through the fluid flow conduit and out of the second aperture, but not to allow fluid to flow into the second aperture and through the fluid flow conduit to the first aperture. In use, the sampling connector is connected to a body cavity to enable the sampling of a body fluid by withdrawal of the body fluid through the first aperture, and to prevent the introduction of a separate fluid to the body cavity. The first aperture can be within a male end and the second aperture can be within a female end or vice versa. A sampling device comprising a sampling connector according to the present invention and use of the sampling connector and/or sampling device is also claimed.

  • Patent number: 8873883
Abstract: A computer implemented method for fusing images taken by a plurality of cameras is disclosed, comprising the steps of: receiving a plurality of images of the same scene taken by the plurality of cameras; generating Laplacian pyramid images for each source image of the plurality of images; applying contrast normalization to the Laplacian pyramids images; performing pixel-level fusion on the Laplacian pyramid images based on a local salience measure that reduces aliasing artifacts to produce one salience-selected Laplacian pyramid image for each pyramid level; and combining the salience-selected Laplacian pyramid images into a fused image. Applying contrast normalization further comprises, for each Laplacian image at a given level: obtaining an energy image from the Laplacian image; determining a gain factor that is based on at least the energy image and a target contrast; and multiplying the Laplacian image by a gain factor to produce a normalized Laplacian image.
