  • Patent number: 10000636
Abstract: Polymeric blends having improved flame retardance properties and good ductility at low temperatures are disclosed. The blend is formed from (A) a photoactive additive that is a cross-linkable polycarbonate resin containing a photoactive group derived from a dihydroxybenzophenone; and (B) a polymer resin which is different from the photoactive additive. The additive can be a compound, oligomer, or polymer. When exposed to ultraviolet light, crosslinking will occur between the photoactive additive and the polymer resin, enhancing the chemical resistance and flame retardance while maintaining ductility.

  • Publication number: 20180163890
Abstract: A valve may comprise a plug receivable by a seat wherein both the plug and seat comprise superhard material. The valve may be designed and operated in such a way so as not to fracture the superhard material as the plug is received by the seat. Specifically, the valve may comprise a magnetic core translatable within at least one solenoid. Kinetic energy from the translating magnetic core may be transmitted to the plug when the magnetic core impacts an anvil causing the plug to move relative to the seat. The plug may be moved incrementally relative to the seat by a plurality of impacts of the magnetic core.

  • Publication number: 20180163891
Abstract: A valve may use fluid pressure to provide bistability to the valve by creating two regions that experience different pressures on one surface of the valve. The two regions may change in size relative to each other as the surface approaches another surface thus changing the combined pressures experienced by the regions. A velocity of fluid flow may increase as it passes one of the regions thus reducing pressure to that region. Additionally, an eddy current may form adjacent another one of the regions thus reducing pressure to that region. Consequently, the valve may be urged open when open and urged closed when closed.

  • Patent number: 9963545
Abstract: Processes for increasing the chemical resistance of a surface of a formed article are disclosed. The formed article is produced from a polymeric composition comprising a photoactive additive containing photoactive groups derived from a monofunctional benzophenone. The surface of the formed article is then exposed to ultraviolet light to cause crosslinking of the photoactive additive and produce a crosslinked surface. The crosslinking enhances the chemical resistance of the surface. Various means for controlling the depth of the crosslinking are also discussed.

  • Publication number: 20180016850
Abstract: A downhole drill bit, of the type used to bore into the earth when searching for or extracting subterranean resources, may comprise a working face opposite an attachment end and an opening passing from the attachment end through to the working face. A protrusion on one end of a bottom hole assembly may extend through the opening and be exposed at the working face when the drill bit is attached to the end of the bottom hole assembly. In various embodiments the exposed portion of the protrusion may house conduits or nozzles for handling fluids; sensors, transmitters or wires for handling electrical signals; or mechanical hammers, motors or cutters for degrading an earthen formation. In this way, the protrusion may bring such elements from the bottom hole assembly to the working face of the drill bit.

  • Patent number: 9818020
Abstract: Various examples of systems, methods, and programs embodied in computer-readable mediums are provided for fingerprint liveness detection. Fingerprint liveness may be determined by evaluating pixels of a fingerprint image to identify pores along a ridge segment of the fingerprint image. A circular derivative operator can be used to identify the pores. Liveness of the fingerprint can be determined based upon features of the identified pores.

  • Publication number: 20170300389
Abstract: Devices and methods for receiving a data file in a communication system. In one embodiment, the wireless communication device includes a transceiver, a memory, and an electronic processor. The transceiver is configured to send and receive data over a wireless communication network. The electronic processor is electrically coupled to the transceiver and the memory and configured to receive, with the transceiver, a first seed, a sequence of blocks, and a subsequent seed, cause the memory to save the sequence of blocks in the memory, and determine whether the subsequent seed is aligned with the first seed. When the subsequent seed is not aligned with the first seed, the electronic processor is configured to cause the memory to delete the sequence of blocks. When the subsequent seed is aligned with the first seed, the electronic processor is configured to cause the memory to maintain the sequence of blocks.
