  • Patent number: 5560292
Abstract: A printing group cylinder of a web-fed rotary printing machine is mounted by its journals on opposed side walls of the machine. A sleeve positioned on or about the cylinder may be slipped on or off of the cylinder through an opening in the side wall. During operation, the opening in the side wall is closed by placing a pair of sliding gates in their closed position. When it is desired to change the sleeve, the opening in the side wall is uncovered by displacing the sliding gates. In order to obtain good print quality, the bearing is formed of multiple interengaging rings, of which at least one is eccentrically shaped. The eccentric shape of the ring causes the axis of the printing group cylinder to move into either a print engagement or disengagement setting when the ring is slidably rotated. The eccentric ring is secured against turning when the sliding gates are opened.

During operation, the opening in the side wall is closed by placing a pair of sliding gates in their closed position. When it is desired to change the sleeve, the opening in the side wall is uncovered by displacing the sliding gates. In order to obtain good prim quality, the bearing is formed of multiple interengaging rings, of which at least one is eccentrically shaped. The eccentric shape of the ring causes the axis of the priming group cylinder to move into either a prim engagement or disengagement setting when the ring is slidably rotated. The eccentric ring is secured against turning when the sliding gates are opened.

  • Patent number: 5161463
Abstract: To positively lock in position a pair of eccentrically journalled blanket cylinders (3, 6), movable between three positions, namely in engagement with a first pair of plate cylinders (1, 4), or a second pair of plate cylinders (2, 5), or in engagement with neither plate cylinder, the blanket cylinders having a printing substrate passed therebetween for perfecting printing, the eccentric bearings (7, 8) for the blanket cylinders are secured to operating disks (9, 10) which, each, are coupled to a scissor-link arrangement formed by two pairs of links (16, 18; 17, 19), joined at a common pivot point. Pneumatic cylinder-piston arrangements move the pivot points (1618, 1719) to compress one of the scissor link pairs to V position, while the other link pair is moved to slightly over-center in-line position for a toggle or locking effect; when both scissor link arms are in half-open V position, the blanket cylinders are disengaged from the plate cylinders.

  • Patent number: 5134934
Abstract: To permit flying plate change of printing plates (14, 15; 28, 29) on plate cylinders (10, 11; 24, 25) of an offset printing system having blanket cylinders (1,2), one of which can function as an impression cylinder (2, 1), the plate cylinders, to maintain register, are axially fixed in the frame (3) of the printing machine, but the blanket cylinders are movable by an eccenter system between three positions (6, 7, 8) and an ink application roller (16) to which also damping fluid can be applied from a damper (20) is selectively engageable with either one of the plate cylinders. Thus, only the blanket cylinder (1, 2) and the associated impression cylinder (2, 1) need be shifted for respective engagement with the plate cylinders, and register alignment of the plate cylinders is maintained. An ink application roller is selectively engageable with the plate cylinders, for example by being supported on a swing shaft or a swing lever (17), with which also a damping fluid application roller (19) is engageable.

  • Patent number: 5092242
Abstract: To provide a clean operator side (I) of a printing machine, the circumferential and lateral register adjustment of a plate cylinder (20) is located on the machine or drive side (II) of the machine and is formed by a special gearing arrangement; a first gear (12) which is rotatable on an axially shiftable stub shaft (19) of the plate cylinder by being positioned on a bearing thereof, is driven from a second gear (9) which may also drive an offset blanket cylinder (18). The first gear is in meshing engagement with a dual gear, having third and fourth gearings (16, 15), the first, second and third gears being spiral or inclined, and the fourth gear (15), which meshes with an axial fixed fifth gear (13) splined to the shaft fo the cylinder (19), is likewise formed with axial teeth.

  • Patent number: 5005475
Abstract: To permit re-sleeving or re-coating of circumferentially continuous printing cylinders, one of the side walls of the printing machine is formed with an opening which is closed off by two separable parts, which are movable towards and away from each other, the separable parts being formed with holes to receive stationary shafts for the respective cylinders. The stationary shafts have ball bearings thereon on which the cylinders are rotatably mounted, the shafts extending beyond bearings in a second side wall and being retained in bearings therein and, beyond the bearings, coupled to a counter holding arrangement so that, upon separation of the parts of the first side wall (1), the shafts come free, permitting access to the circumferences of the cylinders for re-coating or re-sleeving.

  • Patent number: 4934265
Abstract: To permit selective operation of two printing couples (1, 2, 4, 5) for printing, on a continuous web (7) respectively double-image prime printing (FIG. 1), single-image prime printing (FIGS. 3, 5), while permitting flying plate changes of one of the plates of a disengaged printing couple, or prime and verso printing (FIG. 7), two impression cylinders are provided, engageable with the blanket cylinders of the respective printing couples, the impression cylinders being spaced from each other by a gap sufficient to permit passage of the web therebtween when the system operates in the prime-and-verso printing mode, with a gap sufficient so that freshly printed subject matter will not be smeared by contact with the respective impression cylinders.

  • Patent number: 4807527
Abstract: To permit release of one bearing (21) from an opening (6) in one side wall (1) of a printing machine, so that a cover sleeve (12) can be applied over the cylinder (3), the cylinder (3) is retained in cantilever manner supported on the other bearing (22) by an auxiliary shaft (10) extending transversely to a shaft extension (5) from the cylinder, and secured, eccentrically, in side walls (9') of a gear box (9), customarily present on the machine. For axial adjustment of the shaft extension (5) of the cylinder, the auxiliary shaft is axially movable and positionable by a pair of positioning nuts (13, 14) threaded on one shaft end (16') of the auxiliary shaft (10) which, preferably, is formed with a positioning groove (11).

  • Patent number: 4779859
Abstract: To provide for a horizontal offset (x) of the apex of a folding triangle former (2,42), the former triangle, together with a substrate removal or run-out roller (11,51) is movable in a plane positioned at the angle of inclination (.alpha.) of the folding former, for example by interengagement of projection-and-recess means formed on a frame (5,45) holding the former triangle in sidewalls (11,12;52,53) of the apparatus, the recess extending, for example in the form of an elongated slot, at the angle of inclination of the folding former.

  • Patent number: 3937929
Abstract: A method and apparatus for distributing and controlling inventories of food items and the like in which a plurality of individual elements are coded to identify both a corresponding inventory item and a magnitude such as a price associated with that inventory item. A holder member for collecting together a selected group of the individual elements to enable identification of the corresponding food items ordered by a customer as well as sensing the total price thereof. Coding each element so that one dimension thereof extends in a predetermined direction a distance proportional to the price of the corresponding food item.
