  • Patent number: 6848402
Abstract: Apparatus suitable for use in reciprocally opening and closing a camshaft-actuated valve may include a rotating camshaft (20) having first and second cams (16, 17, 18) respectively defining first and second amounts of valve opening distance. A cam follower (10, 11, 12) may be defined on a mounting pin (24) so as to operatively engage the first and second cams in an alternating manner. At a first rotational position of the cam follower relative to the camshaft, the cam follower operatively engages the first cam and generates the first amount of valve opening distance. At a second rotational position, the cam follower operatively engages the second cam and generates the second amount of valve opening distance. A valve lever (6) transmits the respective generated first and second amounts of valve opening distance to the valve. A locking device (50) releasably locks the mounting pin and cam follower in the respective first and second rotational positions.

  • Patent number: 6810851
Abstract: Supplementary control valve devices (26) may be utilized to control the flow of a fluid within an intake passage (16) of a reciprocating piston internal combustion engine and may include a valve member (56) axially reciprocally disposed within the intake passage and at least partially defining a solenoid armature (60). First and second solenoids (38, 50) are provided on opposite sides of the solenoid armature to reciprocally move the valve member between a valve open position and a valve closed position. Sealing contact faces are preferably defined by pole faces (68, 70) of the second solenoid and a peripheral fluid flow passage (34) extends through apertures (46) defined within the second solenoid and between the sealing contact faces. The valve member closes the peripheral fluid flow passage when pressed against the sealing contact faces. Springs (62, 64) preferably bias the valve member towards a central position between the first and second solenoids.

  • Patent number: 6422184
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for impulse charging an internal combustion engine having at least one cylinder in which a piston moves in a stroke movement. The apparatus includes a selectively energizeable magnetic surface disposed in a charging duct of the engine and a closure element disposed in the charging duct relative to the selectively energizeable magnetic surface. Upon energization of the magnetic surface, the closure element is moved from an open position in which a cross section of the charging duct is available for flow therethrough toward the cylinder to a closed position in which the energized magnetic surface retains the closure element by magnetic force at a disposition in which the closure element reduces the cross section of the charging duct in a manner which substantially prevents the flow of fluid therethrough toward the cylinder.

  • Patent number: 6273116
Abstract: In a method for opening a valve, which valve separates a flow channel from a working chamber or connects it therewith and which is embodied as a plate valve that projects upon opening into the working chamber, energy is withdrawn from a flow from the working chamber into the flow channel, resulting form the excess pressure within the working chamber upon opening movement of the valve. The withdrawn energy is used for aiding in further opening of the valve.

  • Patent number: 6202607
Abstract: An electromagnetically operating device for actuating a valve comprises a single solenoid cooperating with an armature which cooperates by a crank system with a shaft which, in turn, is cooperating by a crank system with a valve. The fully open position and the closed position of the valve is defined by the stretched position or the folded position of its crank system. The armature, in the fully open position and in the closed position of the valve, is substantially in the same end position so that the crank system during a valve stroke moves through a dead center position.

  • Patent number: 6186101
Abstract: A device for activating and deactivating a load change valve of an internal combustion engine has a camshaft with at least one valve cam and at least one coupling cam. A rocker arm is supported on a stationary engine component and has a sensing member riding on the cam and actuating the load change valve. A coupling lever is movably connected to the rocker arm and is acted on by the coupling cam such that the coupling lever is moved relative to the rocker arm. A coupling device is provided for interrupting movement transmission of the sensing member onto the load change valve. The coupling lever cooperates with the coupling device and the coupling cam such that, when the sensing member rides on a base circle of the valve cam, a movement transmission between the sensing member and the load change valve is at least approximately interrupted.

  • Patent number: 6131545
Abstract: An apparatus for switching off a load change valve of an internal combustion engine has a camshaft with a cam disk and a pivot lever pivotably connected to an engine part and pivoted back and forth by the cam disk. An actuator is moveably guided in the pivot lever for actuating the load change valve. A coupling member moveable in the pivot lever has two end positions defining a coupling and a decoupling position. In the coupling position the coupling member rigidly connects the actuator and the pivot lever. In the decoupling position the coupling member releases the actuator from the pivot lever to switch off the load change valve. A device for moving the coupling member into the coupling position and the decoupling position is provided. It has a coupling cam rotating at a same speed as the cam disk. It also has a coupling lever acting on the coupling member.
