  • Patent number: 9938829
Abstract: A method for measuring load performance of a positive displacement motor (PDM) test coupon. The test coupon includes a partial length of a PDM stage and is received inside a sealable test chamber. In some embodiments, the test coupon may be cut from a failed PDM stage. The test chamber is filled with test fluid. In some embodiments, the test fluid may be drilling fluid sampled from a live well. Rotation of the rotor on the test coupon actuates rotation of the stator. A braking torque is applied to the stator rotation, enabling evaluation of, for example, fatigue load performance of test coupon. Additional embodiments comprise the rotor axis and the stator axis being offset in order to simulate rotor/stator eccentricity in a full size PDM stage.

Abstract: A torque transmission comprising input and output shaft adapters. Pins disposed on an outer surface of the input shaft adapter. Each pin provides a curved pin portion oriented generally perpendicular to the input shaft adapter's longitudinal axis. The output shaft adapter provides a recess with a plurality of notches formed in the recess's periphery, wherein the recess is shaped and sized such that when the input shaft adapter is received inside the recess, each pin is received into a corresponding notch. The torque transmission further comprises torsional bearings interposed between the pins and the notches, each torsional bearing providing a curved laminate portion such that the curve laminate portions contact the curved pin portions when the pins are received into their corresponding notches. The torsional bearings may further provide flat laminate portions that contact the notch when the pins are received into the notches.

  • Publication number: 20180080525
Abstract: A flywheel apparatus that magnetically unloads a top rotor bearing is described. The apparatus includes a flywheel housing, a rotor with a vertical axis of rotation that includes a magnetic material, a magnet configured to apply a desired upward off-loading force along the vertical axis of rotation, an upper bearing connected to an upper shaft of the rotor, and a bearing housing disposed between the upper bearing and the flywheel housing that substantially prevents downward axial motion of the upper bearing. The magnet includes an electromagnet. A force sensor is used to measure a force on the upper bearing which is provided as input to a controller that updates the current to the electromagnet. The rotor is maintained in a fixed axial position and a spring disposed below a lower bearing absorbs axial dimension growth of the rotor.

  • Publication number: 20180022631
Abstract: A method for cutting thin glass, wherein the thin glass is heated with a laser beam along a path forming a cutting line moving along a forward feed direction, such that a crack propagates along the cutting line and cuts through the thin glass. The laser beam is formed by a beam-forming optic in such a way that the beam profile thereof has an elongated shape. The laser beam is orientated on the surface of the thin glass such that the longitudinal direction thereof is aligned in the feed direction. The elongated shape of the beam profile is asymmetric, such that the intensity course differs at the ends of the beam profile in such a way that the increase in intensity at the front end crossing the thin glass first is steeper than the drop in intensity at the opposite rear end.
