  • Patent number: 6721567
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for allocating resources at a target cell, or cells, of a cellular communication system. Determinations are made of the positioning and of the velocity, of a mobile station. Predictions of a target cell and when a handover is likely to be requested are made. Responsive thereto, a request is made prior to a handover request for the allocation of resources to permit the continued effectuation of a communication service upon handover of communications to the target cell.

  • Publication number: 20040009507
Abstract: An in vitro method for constructing a concatenated head-to-tail repertoire of target nucleic acid sequences is revealed. In particular, the method relates to cycles of concatenation whereby after a single cycle of concatenation, not more than two identical copies of each target nucleic acid sequence are linked together head-to-tail on the same molecule of DNA. The present method ensures that each molecule of a concatenated repertoire is derived from a single template target sequence of the starting repertoire.

  • Patent number: 6578176
Abstract: A genetic algorithm (GA) based approach to optimize integrated circuit designs for power dissipation. The genetic algorithm optimization process efficiently generates tight lower bounds of the peak power dissipation for a given integrated circuit design. In this approach, the power within a given integrated circuit design circuit is viewed as a function in terms of a set of stimuli to primary inputs of the integrated circuit design. Maximization of the function, and hence, the power dissipation is guided by the genetic algorithm. By repeatedly stimulating the integrated circuit design and measuring the corresponding response, the genetic algorithm process efficiently explores the solution space to obtain a maximization of the function. The genetic algorithm process is implemented within a computer-based EDA (electronic design automation) synthesis system.

  • Patent number: 6516952
Abstract: A method to switch a dual-mode serializer-deserializer for data networks. In one embodiment, the present invention recites a method for configuring the communication mode of a device having a Media Access Control-Physical Layer (MAC-PHY) interface for communicating with another device. One step receives a control signal at a device having a MAC-PHY Interface. The control signal indicating whether the device will communicate data over its data path in an aggregate mode or in a non-aggregate mode. In another step, the device is configured to communicate in the mode selected by said control signal. In another step, data is communicated over the data path of the device in a synchronous manner when the device is in an aggregate mode, and is communicated over the data path of the device in an asynchronous manner when the device is in a non-aggregate mode.

  • Publication number: 20010014857
Abstract: A voice activity detector to analyze a short-term averaged energy (STAE), a long-term averaged energy (LTAE), and a peak-to-mean likelihood ratio (PMLR) in order to determine whether a current audio frame being transmitted represents voice or silence. This is accomplished by determining whether a sum of the STAE and a factor is greater than the LTAE. If not, the current audio frame represents silence. If so, a second set of determinations is performed. Herein, a determination is made as to whether the difference between the LTAE and the STAE is less than a predetermined threshold. If so, the current audio frame represents voice. Otherwise, the PMLR is determined and compared to a selected threshold. If the PMLR is greater than the selected threshold, the current audio frame represents a voice signal. Otherwise, it represents silence.

  • Patent number: 6161018
Abstract: At a receiver location in a wireless communication system service area, a set of characteristics that describe a received ray of a subscriber signal is measured. In a model of the wireless communication system service area, a propagation path of a model ray launched from a location in the model of the wireless communication system service area that corresponds to the receiver location in the wireless communication system service area is determined, wherein the ray has model signal characteristics based upon the set of characteristics that describe the received ray of the subscriber signal. Thereafter, a subscriber location in the wireless communication system service area is estimated in response to the propagation path of the model ray.

  • Patent number: 6148211
Abstract: In a model of a wireless communication system service area (160), a set of characteristics associated with the reception of a model signal (210) are calculated (308), preferably using ray-tracing techniques, wherein the model signal (172) is transmitted from a selected location (162) to a receiver location (166). Next, a set of characteristics that describe a received signal at a receiver location in the wireless communication system service area are measured (316), wherein the receiver location corresponds to the receiver location in the model (160). Thereafter, a relationship between the calculated set of characteristics and the measured set of characteristics is determined (318), and the location of the subscriber unit that transmitted the received signal is estimated (320) in response to the relationship between the calculated set of characteristics and the measured set of characteristics.

  • Patent number: 6026095
Abstract: An improved computer network and network device uses characteristics of prior art shared network protocols to control the flow of data and access to the network among a group of transmitting nodes. The invention determines which nodes wish to send data when a collision occurs by detecting and recording which nodes participated in a collision. A scheduling routine is designed to give each connected node a chance to send. A transmission control mechanism is used to prevent a subset of transmitters from transmitting while allowing one ES to transmit without experiencing a collision. The invention has a number of applications including within an improved ethernet repeater in a multimedia ethernet.

  • Patent number: 5907422
Abstract: An optical receiver communication system converts optical signals modulated by analog or digital waveforms to RF signals. The optical receiver contains an automatic level control circuit to adjust the electronic gain of the system across a broad bandwidth spectrum. Two impedance matching circuits are designed using broad band matching technique to expand the bandwidth for increasing the maximum receivable frequencies to 1 GHz. A RLC impedance matching circuit forms a resonant combination to maintain .+-.1 dB fluctuation between the low-and-high-frequency limits of the bandwidth, and a 75.OMEGA. impedance matching circuit creates a 180.degree. phase shift between outgoing and incoming signals to ensure low return loss.
