  • Publication number: 20190318760
Abstract: The present disclosure generally relates to data storage devices, and more specifically, to a magnetic media drive employing a magnetic recording head. The head includes a main pole, a trailing shield, and a MAMR stack including at least one magnetic layer. The magnetic layer has a surface facing the main pole, and the surface has a first side at a media facing surface (MFS) and a second side opposite the first side. The length of the second side is substantially less than the length of the first side. By reducing the length of the second side, the area to be switched at a location recessed from the MFS is reduced as a current flowing from the main pole to the trailing shield or from the trailing shield to the main pole. With the reduced area of the magnetic layer, the overall switch time of the magnetic layer is decreased.

  • Patent number: 9947347
Abstract: A magnetic sensor that generates a signal based on inverse spin Hall effect. The sensor includes a magnetic free layer and a non-magnetic, electrically conductive spin Hall layer located adjacent to the magnetic free layer. Circuitry is configured to supply an electrical current that travels through the magnetic free layer and the spin Hall layer in a direction that is generally perpendicular to the plane of the layers or perpendicular to a plane defined by an interface between the magnetic free layer and the spin Hall layer. The inverse spin Hall effect causes an electrical voltage in the spin Hall layer as a result of the current, and the voltage changes relative to the orientation of magnetization of the magnetic free layer. Circuitry is provided for measuring the voltage in the spin Hall layer in a direction that is generally perpendicular to the direction of the electrical current.

  • Patent number: 8797685
Abstract: A magnetic write head for data recording having a magnetic write pole with a stepped magnetic shell structure that defines a secondary flare point. The secondary flare point defined by the magnetic shell portion can be more tightly controlled with respect to its distance from the air bearing surface (ABS) of the write head than can a traditional flare point that is photolithographically on the main pole structure. This allows the effective flare point of the write head to be moved much closer to the ABS than would otherwise be possible using currently available tooling and photolithography techniques. The write head also includes a non-magnetic spacer layer formed over the magnetic shell structure that is recessed from the ABS by a distance that is greater than that of the magnetic shell portion. A magnetic shield is formed over the magnetic shell and non-magnetic spacer.

  • Patent number: 8638527
Abstract: A signaling method and apparatus for providing two write assist components for perpendicular thin film heads writing to high coercivity media is disclosed. The two components provided by the present invention include a media writing assist component and a head switching assist component. Circuit wiring configurations and waveforms for driving an auxiliary half coil are disclosed. These include configurations for connecting the auxiliary half coil in parallel with the main data coil, or connecting the auxiliary half coil to the thermal flight control system. Provision for both common mode signals as well as differential mode signals are disclosed. RF sinusoidal waveforms between 1 and 5 GHz have been found suitable for head switching assist functions for either symmetric current feed and common mode current configuration, or asymmetric current feed and differential mode current configuration.

  • Patent number: 8514518
Abstract: A magnetic write pole structure that is configured to greatly simplify the manufacture of a perpendicular magnetic write head. The write head has a magnetic yoke that is oriented along a plane that is perpendicular to the direction of the data track. This allows the entire yoke to be formed in a single electroplating step, rather than being built up in several plated layers. The yoke can also be formed with magnetic side shields, or with a trailing or wrap around shield, which can be integral with the rest of the yoke and can be advantageously formed in the same, single electroplating step.

  • Patent number: 8411390
Abstract: A structure for providing two write assist components for perpendicular thin film heads writing to high coercivity media is disclosed. The two components provided by the present invention include a media writing assist component and a head switching assist component. The structure includes an auxiliary half coil surrounding the pole tip at the ABS, and includes conductive elements running parallel to the pole layer which are connected to the auxiliary half coil. Integrated heat sinks located at either the ABS or at a recessed position are provided. The conductive elements can prove either symmetric or asymmetric current feed geometries, which allow differential or common mode current flow to the half coil.

  • Patent number: 8179635
Abstract: A thin film, perpendicular write head for use with recording media with or without a soft under layer is disclosed. The present invention comprises an tapered auxiliary pole, situated below the main write pole and separated from the write pole by a lower non-magnetic gap. The auxiliary pole alleviates problems such as erasure after write, and cross track stray erasure fields, associated with operating conventionally designed perpendicular writes heads with media having no soft under layer.

  • Patent number: 7894159
Abstract: A magnetic write head having independent trailing and side magnetic shields. The side shields and trailing shields are independently of one another so that they can have throat heights that are different from one another. This advantageously allows the magnetic potential between the write pole and side shields to be controlled independently of one another without relying on the side gap and trailing gap thicknesses. Furthermore, magnetic performance of the write head can be improved because the side shields can be constructed with varying tapered throat heights, while the throat height of the trailing shield can remain constant.

  • Publication number: 20100126001
Abstract: A method for self aligning a lapping guide with a structure of a write pole. A write pole is formed over a substrate and an electrically conductive material lapping guide material is deposited in a location that is removed from the write pole. A mask is then formed over a portion of the write pole and a portion of the electrically conductive material. A material removal process such as reactive ion etching can then be performed to remove a portion of the magnetic material that is not protected by the mask structure. An magnetic material is then electroplated over the write pole with the write pole, with the mask still in place. In this way, the electroplated material has an edge that is self aligned with an edge of the electrically conductive lapping guide material, both being defined by the same mask structure.
