  • Publication number: 20040071017
Abstract: A head slider moveable relative to a storage media having a storage layer is disclosed. The disc head slider comprises a read head formed on the head slider, and comprises a first electrical contact layer adapted to carry a sensor current, a second electrical contact layer adapted to carry the sensor current, a read sensor and a bias magnet. The read sensor is configured to carry the sense current perpendicular to plane. The read sensor also has a top sensor edge, and has a bottom sensor edge aligned with the air-bearing surface to access data in the storage disc. The bias magnet magnetically biases the read sensor. Further, the first and second electrical contact layers are made of a material that does not magnetically shield the read sensor.

  • Patent number: 6654209
Abstract: A magnetic recording head includes a current perpendicular to the plane read head having a read sensor and a low resistance lead structure. The lead structure includes a layer of conductive material that forms at least a portion of the lead structure such that the layer of conductive material has a lower resistivity than a resistivity of the remainder of the lead structure. The layer of conductive material with lower resistivity decreases the overall resistance of the lead structure.

  • Publication number: 20030127424
Abstract: A method of fabricating a magnetic structure, the method including: forming a first magnetic structure having a first side and a second side, and using a focused ion beam to etch only one of the first and second sides, to reduce a width of the magnetic structure. The first magnetic structure can be formed using a full-field lithographic technique such as optical lithography. The magnetic structure can include a rectangular portion with the first and second sides being opposite sides of the rectangular portion. The focused ion beam can comprise a gallium ion beam. Magnetic recording heads having a magnetic structure fabricated according to the method are also included.

  • Publication number: 20030026040
Abstract: A write head for writing information bits to magnetic storage media comprises a first write pole for producing a first magnetic field in a first direction and a second write pole for producing a second magnetic field such that the combined field from the two poles lies either substantially along the first direction or in a second direction that is substantially orthogonal to the first direction. The second write pole includes a free layer having magnetization controlled by spin transfer torque, and a first spacer positioned between the free layer and the first write pole. The write head can further include a pinned layer and a second spacer positioned between the pinned layer and the free layer. A disc drive that includes the write head and a method of writing to magnetic storage media that utilizes the write head are also included.

  • Publication number: 20020051330
Abstract: According to one embodiment of the present invention, a read/write head for a disc drive includes an active stack between and in contact with a first shield and a second shield. The active stack includes a plurality of layers and a non-continuous insulating interlayer. According to another embodiment, a sense current is coupled through the active stack that has two larger dimensions and a smaller dimension. The sense current is coupled to flow in a direction that is approximately normal or perpendicular to a plane defined by the two larger dimensions. Changes in the sense current are detected to detect changes in flux fields caused by changes in magnetic flux regions in a magnetizable medium. According to another embodiment, the active stack is fabricated by fabricating the plurality of layers, and fabricating the non-continuous insulating interlayer in contact with one of the layers.
