  • Publication number: 20100099543
Abstract: Cigarette filter rods having individual objects positioned at predetermined intervals therein are prepared by transferring the individual objects from a rotating horizontal pan to a rotating vertical wheel and then depositing the object into a web of filter tow. Each object is positioned within the moving web of tow. The web filter material and the objects positioned within the web are introduced into a rod-forming unit wherein the rod is formed. The rate of feed of the filter tow, the rate of rotation of the horizontal pan and the vertical wheel are controlled relative to one another such that objects are positioned at predetermined intervals along the rod. Cigarette filter elements having well controlled amounts of flavorant contained therein can be made from the rods.

  • Publication number: 20100098000
Abstract: A new architecture capable of utilizing the existing twisted pair interface between customer premises equipment and an associated serving local switching office is used to provide a vast array of new services to customers. Using an intelligent services director (ISD) at the customer services equipment as an interface for the equipment to an existing twisted cable pair and a facilities management platform (FMP) at the serving local switching office as an interface to various networks and service opportunities, new services such as simultaneous, multiple calls (voice analog or digital), facsimile, Internet traffic and other data can be transmitted and received over the twisted cable pair by using digital subscriber loop transmission schemes. The new services include but are not limited to videophone, utility meter reading and monitoring, broadcasting and multicasting.

  • Publication number: 20100085979
Abstract: Peer-to-peer communications sessions involve the transmission of one or more data streams from a source to a set of receivers that may redistribute portions of the data stream via a set of routing trees. Achieving a comparatively high, sustainable data rate throughput of the data stream(s) may be difficult due to the large number of available routing trees, as well as pertinent variations in the nature of the communications session (e.g., upload communications caps, network link caps, the presence or absence of helpers, and the full or partial interconnectedness of the network.) The selection of routing trees may be facilitated through the representation of the node set according to a linear programming model, such as a primal model or a linear programming dual model, and iterative processes for applying such models and identifying low-cost routing trees during an iteration.

  • Patent number: 7672592
Abstract: An optical transmitter system supplies a plurality of different wavelength optical radiation components to a transmission element which, in operation, is connected to the transmitter system for conveying the different wavelength radiation components to a respective receiver. The supply of the wavelength components is interrupted, preferably in response to a loss of the wavelength components at the respective receiver. A timer provides respective restart times which differ one to another for the wavelength radiation components. The supply of the wavelength components is restarted, following an interruption, at the respective restart times provided by the timer.

  • Patent number: 7667148
Abstract: One aspect of the invention involves a computer-implemented method in which a portable communications device with a click wheel and a display detects a plurality of finger contacts with the click wheel. Each finger contact includes an angular displacement of the finger contact on the click wheel between an initial location and a final location of the finger contact. The device displays an image that includes digits arranged in a circle. The image rotates, in response to each finger contact, by an amount determined in accordance with the angular displacement of the finger contact. For each finger contact, the device determines a digit. The determined digit is independent of the initial location of the finger contact on the click wheel. The device performs a task using the determined digits. Exemplary tasks include dialing a telephone number and sending numeric input to a remote computer.

  • Patent number: 7590105
Abstract: An device, called a facilities management platform (FMP) connects current digital and analog carrier networks and packet switched networks of interexchange carriers with high speed multiple access subscriber links implemented over twisted pair lines. The subscriber line is terminated by an access module containing one or more modems. In preferred embodiments, the modems are high-speed digital tethered virtual radio channel or xDSL modems. The FMP interface applies and receives signaling and voice through a digital loop carrier (DLC) via a multiplexer connected directly to the DLC backplane. The multiplexer is controlled by a controller of an access module. It translates data from the subscriber link to the form compatible with the digital backplane to create the appearance of one or more line cards. The FMP also may contain a sound generator to allow it to handle calls through an analog carrier network.

  • Patent number: 7587453
Abstract: A method and system for determining an availability of an application. Pairs of processes utilized by the application are determined. Each pair includes consumer and provider processes. For each pair, a diagnostic transaction is initiated by the pair's consumer process, utilizes an application programming interface (API) to open a connection between the consumer process and provider process and to request access to a resource managed by the provider process. Any communication between a pair's consumer and provider processes uses the same API. The diagnostic transaction is completed by receiving or not receiving, at the consumer process, a response from the pair's provider process where the response provides the requested access. Receipt of the response designates the provider process as available to the application, whereas non-receipt of the response designates the provider process as unavailable. If responses are received for all diagnostic transactions, the application is available.
