  • Patent number: 5863270
Abstract: A self-contained change speed apparatus for use on a bicycle. It has fixed shaft, a hub body rotatably supported on the fixed shaft, a change speed device controlled to turn the hub body about the fixed shaft at one of a series of speeds, and a power input member adapted to provide driving power, A clutch is moved between an active position and a non-active position and adapted to transmit driving power from the power input member to the change speed device. A control mechanism changes the speed ratio of the change speed device, advances the clutch to the non-active position before changing the speed of the change speed device, and delays the movement of the clutch to the active position, for permitting driving power to be returned to the change speed device after a change of the speed ratio of the change speed device.

  • Patent number: 5855530
Abstract: The present invention relates to a speed-changing transmission hub for a bicycle comprising: a central shaft; a controlling device; a planetary gear system, which comprises a planet gear holder, holding several planet gears; a second ring gear; a first ring gear; and two sun gears. Variations of speed are realized by separately fixing the sun gears of different diameters. There is no switching of input and no reversal of the rotation of the sun gears. The sun gears only need to be controlled by a one-way clutch guided by the controlling device, which is mounted on the central shaft. Thereby the arrangement is simplified and its weight is reduced.

  • Patent number: 5733215
Abstract: A multi-speed sprocket assembly of a bicycle includes at least a small sprocket and a large sprocket which enable the chain to engage with different sprockets to attain the chain shifting effect by the guidance of the rear derailleur device. The improvement of the multi-speed sprocket assembly includes three feature teeth being furnished at both the large sprocket and the small sprocket wherein a side recess is formed on each of the feature teeth at the surface of a sprocket facing another sprocket, in addition, at the first and second feature teeth of the small sprocket, there is a circular top end recess extended from the top of the teeth at the surface subjected to forces and penetrated through the circular top end recess of the whole teeth.

  • Patent number: 5721952
Abstract: Techniques for a computer system to automatically detect the type of hard disk drive installed in the system even if the hard disk drive has been replaced or upgraded. A method includes retrieving data from a partition table and calculating the necessary parameters from the values in the partition table. In a specific embodiment, the method includes calculating a HEAD parameter and a SECTORS/TRACK parameter from certain addresses stored in the partition table. The method further includes sending an IDENTIFY DRIVE (ID) command to the hard disk drive. Some types of hard disk drive communicate additional information in response to the ID command. The method includes calculating a CYLINDER parameter, using such additional information, if provided. Otherwise, the CYLINDER parameter is calculated from information in the partition table.

  • Patent number: 5720003
Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining the accuracy limit of a learning machine for predicting path performance degradation imposed by the quality of the path performance data is disclosed. A plurality of learning machines of increasing capacity are trained using training data and tested using test data, and the training error rates and test error rates are calculated. The asymptotic error rates of the learning machines are calculated and compared. When the change in asymptotic error rate falls below a certain rate, the asymptotic error rate estimates the accuracy limit for a learning machine for predicting path performance degradation. The accuracy limit is derived from insufficiencies in the path performance data and is applicable to any learning machine trained on and applied to the path performance data, regardless of the complexity of the learning machine or the size of the training data set.

  • Patent number: 5673594
Abstract: The present invention relates to a bicycle speed change lever apparatus which is mounted near the handlebar of a bicycle. A lever apparatus is used for pushing a ratchet member, allowing the ratchet member to produce a positive or negative rotation, which further drives a cable-pulling member, thus allowing the cable to be tightened or relaxed by the cable-pulling member to accomplish an in or back shift. A position maintaining mechanism is also provided for effectuating the shift change, and the cable is allowed to maintain a certain amount of tension. The speed change lever apparatus eases the shifting operation and makes the in shift or back shift more precisely controlled.

  • Patent number: 5632226
Abstract: A speed indicator for bicycles for indicating the shifting action of the bicycle and a speed sign at each state of shift includes a driving wheel driven by a takeup reel of a shifting device, a resilient strip driven by the driving wheel, and a track along which the resilient strip may displace. When the resilient strip displaces along the track, a shift sign pre-formed on the resilient strip may be shown through an indicating element provided on the track. The resilient strip may be adapted for use in vertically or horizontally oriented tracks of any construction, and their assembly is easy. The driving wheel further includes a compensation mechanism for ensuring clear indication of the indicated sign on the resilient strip.
