  • Patent number: 6327249
Abstract: A device for use in a modem configuration that enables the transfer of data from a host signal processor (HSP) to an A/D-D/A converter or CODEC with less data loss, with low noise and that can send data at varying carrier frequencies without changing the size of the buffers. The device further allows for data transfer that is flexible with any given modulation scheme, carrier frequency or baud frequency to conform with the V.34, V90, as well as prior and subsequent recommendations. The device further includes a counter for counting the number of data samples transferred between the CODEC and the HSP and for alerting the HSP to avoid an overflow condition. The counter is further configured to count beyond the physical size of the buffer in order to simplify operation in an overflow condition. A transmit buffer is included for transferring data from the HSP to the CODEC.

  • Patent number: 5535228
Abstract: A device (100) and method (400) are set forth that provide a parity check that utilizes a nonlinear dependence upon bits other than the parity bit alone. The 4D 16-state Wei trellis code is made transparent to m.multidot.90 degree rotations by utilizing a parity generating unit that generates a parity check bit based on at least a second rotationally significant label bit. The parity check bit allows detection of errors in a first rotationally-significant label bit, i.e., allows for achievement of a rotationally transparent parity check.

  • Patent number: 5428629
Abstract: In a data packet communications network capable of transmitting a digitally coded data packet message including an error-check code from a source node to a destination node over a selected transmission link which includes at least one intermediate node operative to intentionally alter a portion of a message to form an altered message which is ultimately routed to the destination node, a method of recomputing at the intermediate node a new error-check code for the altered message with a predetermined number of computational operations, i.e. computational time, independent of the length of the message, while preserving the integrity of the initially computed error-check code of the message.

  • Patent number: 5297186
Abstract: Optimal baud rate and carrier frequency for data transmission using a modem on a communication channel (100) are determined by utilizing an on-line line probing technique. The technique utilizing the information from a decoder noise power spectrum estimated from the equalized received modulated signals and decoder output symbols to determine the decoder signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) and supported bit rates for the available baud rates and carrier frequencies. These SNRs and bit rates together with a band edge SNR difference at each frequency band are utilized to select (110) the optimal baud rate and carrier frequency.

  • Patent number: 5268655
Abstract: A self-adjusting phase-locked loop (PLL) parameter adjusting device (APAD) (100) and method that automatically adjusts a phase-locked loop to provide tracking ability when and where needed, as opposed to utilizing a PLL adjusting device with preset parameters, thus maintaining minimal possible noise bandwidth. The method utilizes (1) successively integrating the PLL error output signal over a number of samples to provide a plurality of sums, (2) checking a predetermined number of sums and recording and counting the sign of each sum, (3) comparing the counted record to a predetermined threshold value, and (4) automatically adjusting PLL parameter(s) and the sample number in accordance with a predetermined strategy, such that adjusted PLL parameters are provided to the PLL.

  • Patent number: 5267249
Abstract: A device and method for asynchronous cyclic redundancy checking (CRC) for digital receivers includes utilizing a finite impulse response (FIR) filter, and comparing and gating circuits. The FIR filter may contain a first multiple delay system unit (102) and a first logic gating system (104). The comparing and gating circuit may contain a second multiple delay system unit (106), and a second logic gating system (110). The device and method is implementable, where desired, utilizing a computer program. The invention provides a faster determination of a CRC frame synchronization on a received digital signal.
