  • Patent number: 6339364
Abstract: A radio frequency (RF) choke having improved insertion loss and reduced modulation hum. The choke includes a core having first and second end portions which have similar magnetization and saturation characteristics, and which may be of equal or unequal diameters. A plurality of turns of a first conductor encircle the first end portion of the core in a first direction to define a first winding. Pluralities of turns of a second conductor encircle the second end portion of the core in the opposite direction to define second and third windings. The numbers and spacings of the turns of the first winding are so related to the numbers and spacings of the turns of the second and third windings that relatively low frequency currents flowing through said windings generate substantially canceling fluxes in the first and second end portions of the core, while relatively high frequency currents flowing through said windings do not generate substantially canceling fluxes in the first and second end portions of the core.

  • Patent number: 6094352
Abstract: An apparatus allowing for the removal of a circuit board secured in a housing and in electrical and mechanical contact with one or more coaxial cable connectors without the need to remove any of the coaxial cable connectors from the housing. The apparatus comprises a housing having a plurality of connector means, each connector means having an opening for receiving the center conductor of coaxial cable and a circuit board having a plurality of corners with one or more of the corners having a notch. An electrically conductive retaining member has an interior surface shaped to accept the center conductor and has a threaded aperture that is capable of accepting a binding screw.

  • Patent number: 6094110
Abstract: This invention relates to a radio frequency ("RF) choke having improved insertion loss and reduced hum modulation. The RF choke includes three conductors wound in series around an elongated core. The first conductor forms a first group of windings where each turn abuts the next turn. The second conductor forms a second group windings where each turn is spaced from the next. The third conductor forms a third group of windings where each turn abuts the next turn. The second and third groups of windings are wound in an opposite direction around the core than the first group of windings. The elongated core can include two separate diameters. A plurality of resistors are electrically connected to said conductors to provide an impedence that effectively blocks an RF signal at between 5 MHz and 1000 MHz. This type of choke can be employed in numerous circuits, including line splitters and couplers, trunk amplifiers, bridge amplifiers and line extender amplifiers.

  • Patent number: 5203077
Abstract: A mounting device and method are provided for mounting of large discrete electronic components such as transformers on a surface mount circuit board. A carrier board is provided with small tabs extending laterally outwardly therefrom and the lead wires from the component are wrapped around the tabs. Corresponding solder pads are provided in the main circuit board so as to coincide with the tabs. The solder on the pads is flowed to secure the carrier to the main board in good electrical and mechanical contact.

  • Patent number: 5032808
Abstract: A radio frequency choke for a cable or CATV system is designed for blocking signals from 5 to 1000 MHz and passing 60 Hz AC power. The RF choke has a wire coil that is wound upon a coil form of a predetermined cross section, the coil being formed of a number of successive spaced windings on the form, with each winding being joined to the next by an air coil of at least one turn, formed off the loop. The various successive windings should have different numbers of turns. Forming the air coils tends to tighten the windings onto the form, so that a fixative coating or adhesive can be eliminated or omitted.

  • Patent number: 5006822
Abstract: An RF coupling device is formed on a hybrid printed circuit which avoids discrete capacitors or resistors. The substrate is formed of refractory dielectric sheet, such as alumina or another ceramic. A printed conductor is printed on the front surface of the substrate, and has one or more broadened portions formed on it as capacitor plates. One or more printed resistors are in contact with the printed conductor. A ground pad is printed in a predetermined pattern onto a portion of the reverse surface of the substrate at selected locations. The ground pad has one or more portions that are in registry with the capacitor plates and serve as grounded plates for the capacitors. One or more inductors can be printed onto the substrate in a meander pattern and in contact with the remainder of the printed conductor. The printed circuit receives one or more RF transformers whose leads can be soldered to the printed circuit.

  • Patent number: 4851609
Abstract: Apparatus for enclosing an electrical device that includes a two-piece housing having a base section and a cover section. At least one of the sections includes a molded plastic shell made of a high strength, weather resistant plastic and a conductive metal liner that surrounds the electrical device. The other section can be of similar construction or cast of a conductive metal such as aluminum.

  • Patent number: 4789845
Abstract: A signal splitter connects a radio frequency signal source to a pair of output loads, e.g., separate receivers, and has an increased high-end frequency response as compared to similar devices. First and second tubular cores are disposed side by side, each with a pair of toroidal windings therein. An input end of the first winding of the first core is coupled to the signal input and the second end of the second winding to ground, respectively, while output ends of the windings in the second core are connected to the output loads. The other ends of the windings of the two cores are respectively connected to one another to form two single-pair twisted connections. These are passed into through holes of a printed circuit board and are soldered or otherwise electrically connected to a printed conductor on the board. This construction reduces stray inductance significantly and also provides better mechanical mounting than previous devices. The two tubular cores could be fused as a single core with two holes.

  • Patent number: 4311974
Abstract: A directional coupler for sampling energy traversing a CATV system of the type wherein wide band television signals are extracted from a coaxial transmission line situated at points located at varying distances from the line amplifier. The coupler includes a voltage sensing transformer in shunt with the center and outer conductors of the cable and a current sensing transformer in series with the center conductor. The transformers are wound to provide the coupler with a relatively low tap value. Windings in the shunt transformer are used to internally boost the impedance at the input to the series transformer to maximize return losses and directivity.
