    Abstract: A transmitting device, a receiving device, an optical communication system, and associated methods are provided. The transmitting device transmits an optical signal containing data, and comprises: an optical tone generator for generating at least one optical tone; at least one encoder for performing advanced coding on at least one data signal respectively, each of the at least one data signal carrying a part of the data; at least one mapper for performing high order modulation on the at least one coded data signal; and an up-converter for up-converting the at least one high-order-modulated data signal into the optical signal to be outputted through the at least optical tone. Thereby, high speed (e.g., over 1-Tb/s) transmission per single channel over a long-haul distance (e.g. over 1000-km) with error-free recovery may be achieved.

    Abstract: Geographic atrophy of the eye can be detected and measured by imaging the eye at a depth greater than the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) at a plurality of locations of the eye, for example, using optical coherence tomography (OCT); determining a ratio of the intensities of imaging signals of a retinal layer(s) with respect to the intensity of imaging signals of a sub-RPE layer(s) at each location; determining representative values based at least in part on the determined ratios; generating a map of the representative values; and identifying diseased areas from the map. Contours and binary maps may be generated based on the identified diseased areas. The size and shape of the identified areas may be analyzed and monitored over a period of time.

The transmission apparatus transmits an optical signal, and comprises: at least one encoder for encoding at least one data signal, respectively; at least one first modulator for performing first modulation on the at least one encoded data signal, respectively, and generating at least one first modulated signal; at least one second modulator for performing second modulation, which is DFT-spread-OFDM modulation, on the at least one first modulated signal, respectively, and generating at least one second modulated signal; and an up-converter for up-converting the at least one second modulated signal into the optical signal to be transmitted. Thus, a PAPR of the optical OFDM transmission signal is decreased, a signal distortion caused by non-linearity of optical devices is reduced, and a reception quality of the signal is improved.

The frequency estimator is configured to determine a carrier frequency offset of the payload data from the symbol header. The symbol synchronizer is configured to determine a starting location of the payload data within the bit stream by cross-correlating a synchronization pattern within the symbol header with a model synchronization pattern stored by the symbol synchronizer.

A second metal layer on a first metal layer is deposited. A first photoresist layer is formed exclusively within the contact hole. The second metal layer is wet etched to recess the second metal layer from sidewalls of the bottom dielectric layer in the contact hole. A second photoresist layer is formed exclusively within the contact hole. The first metal layer is wet etched to recess the first metal layer from the top dielectric layer. The first metal layer extends over the bond pad edge onto the bottom dielectric layer.
