  • Publication number: 20060293173
Abstract: Supported catalysts are provided to promote hydrogen generation from the hydrolysis of boron hydrides. The supported catalyst is a supported metallic mixture comprising a first transition metal selected from the group consisting of cobalt, ruthenium, zinc, molybdenum, manganese, titanium, tin, cadmium, and iridium, in an amount of from about 0.1 to about 20% by weight, and a second metal selected from the group consisting of cobalt, ruthenium, zinc, molybdenum, manganese, titanium, tin, cadmium, boron, and iridium, in an amount of from about 0.05 to about 25% by weight of the supported catalyst.

  • Publication number: 20060269470
Abstract: Hydrogen generators and power module systems that use solid chemical hydrides and acidic reagents for hydrogen storage and generation on demand are disclosed. The generators incorporate mechanisms for controlling the contact between solid chemical hydride and acidic reagents to control the rate of hydrogen generation and characteristics of the reaction products, including bulk density. The preferred systems of the present invention combine functions of fuel reagent storage, reaction chamber, and gas-liquid separation into a minimum number of components to reduce the balance of plant of hydrogen generation systems.

  • Publication number: 20050276746
Abstract: The operating characteristics of catalytic reactors used in systems which generate hydrogen from the contact of a fuel with a catalyst are enhanced by such reactors incorporating one or more of group of elements consisting of (a) a heat exchanging element that preheats the fuel solution prior to its contact with the catalyst, (b) one or more liquid diffusing elements which distributes the flow of fuel over the catalyst so as to increase the generation hydrogen from such contact, (c) multiple catalysts having different hydrogen generating characteristics and d) a membrane capable of operating at pressures equal to or greater than 50 psig which surrounds catalytic material in the reactor and separates the generated hydrogen from the fuel.

  • Publication number: 20050238573
Abstract: A system is disclosed for hydrogen generation based on hydrolysis of solid chemical hydrides with the capability of controlled startup and stop characteristics wherein regulation of acid concentration, acid feed rate, or a combination of both control the rate of hydrogen generation. The system comprises a first chamber for storing a solid chemical hydride and a second chamber for storing an acidic reagent. The solid chemical hydride is a solid metal borohydride having the general formula MBH4, where M is selected from the group consisting of alkali metal cations, alkaline earth metal cations, aluminum cation, zinc cation, and ammonium cation. The acidic reagent may comprise inorganic acids such as the mineral acids hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and phosphoric acid, and organic acids such as acetic acid, formic acid, maleic acid, citric acid, and tartaric acid, or mixtures thereof.
