    Abstract: A disc drive includes a data storage surface having a system data zone and a user data zone, and a head that communicates with the data storage surface. The disc drive also includes a control circuit communicatively coupled to the head. The control circuit is configured to, during power up initialization of the disc drive, apply a fly height control value to direct the head to fly at a first target fly height for reading system data from the system data zone. The first target fly height is substantially higher than a second target fly height for reading user data from the user data zone. The control circuit determines whether an actual fly height of the head is substantially equal to the first target fly height. The control circuit performs fly height correction when the actual fly height is not substantially equal to the first target fly height.

The problems of uneven light distribution due to drop-off and movement of the at least one of the diffuser film, the lower anti-reflection film and the upper anti-reflection film may be avoided.

    Abstract: Apparatus and method for reducing the effects of thermal asperities on a rotatable data recording surface. A data transducer writes user data to a first set of tracks at a first fly height above the recording surface. A compensation circuit detects a thermal asperity (TA) on the recording surface, and establishes a guard band as a second set of tracks that are co-radial with the TA. The second set of tracks are deallocated and removed from service. The compensation circuit further defines a reserve band as a third set of tracks immediately adjacent the guard band, and selects an increased, second fly height that allows the data transducer to write data to the reserve band without contacting the TA. The second set of tracks may have a greater track pitch than the first set of tracks to compensate for the greater fly height.

The signal is outputted, wherein the signal includes a direct current (DC) component, a wide bandwidth noise component, and an STO oscillating radio frequency (RF) component. The signal is filtered, wherein the filtering removes the DC component and the STO oscillating RF component, leaving the wide bandwidth noise component. A value of the wide bandwidth noise component is converted into a binary value, and a bit from the binary value is selected and combined with another bit to form a random number.

    Abstract: A system and technique for securing communications between endpoints in a local area network (LAN) includes receiving at a first endpoint in the LAN, a request from an application to connect to a second endpoint in the LAN. Approval from a controller to establish a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) tunnel to the second endpoint is requested. Upon receiving approval from the controller, the first endpoint receives from the controller a session identifier for the SSL tunnel. The controller also distributes a copy of the session identifier to the second endpoint. After receipt of the session identifier at the first endpoint, the session identifier is forwarded from the first endpoint to the second endpoint for security authorization, and the SSL tunnel is established. The SSL tunnel extends from the first endpoint in the LAN to the second endpoint in the LAN.

The LLC resonant converter comprises: a half-bridge or full-bridge chopper having a driving circuit, an inductance-capacitance series resonant network coupled to the chopper, an isolation transformer coupled to the resonant network, and a rectification and filtering circuit coupled to the isolation transformer; a feedforward controller coupled to generate a feedforward signal based on an input voltage; and a controlled oscillator coupled to receive the feedforward signal from the feedforward controller and to control an operating frequency of the chopper via the driving circuit based on the feedforward signal. Thus, a feedforward correction is provided for the LLC resonant converter, so that ripples in a DC output voltage of the LLC resonant converter are reduced.

A whitelist identifies components and processes of an authorized multi-tiered application for the cloud. An application profile for the application specifies valid computing flows between components of a tier and components of another tier, where components of the tier are executed at an endpoint and the other components of the other tier are executed at another endpoint. Endpoints are provisioned with static routing tables identifying at least one subnet destination. A request is received at a first endpoint to connect to a second endpoint. If the second endpoint falls within the at least one subnet destination, the controller performs one or more further security checks including checking the application profile flow, whitelist, and endpoint quarantine list. A network kernel table at an endpoint that includes the static routing table may be periodically checked to detect tampering.

    Abstract: Apparatus and method for data security in a data storage device. In some embodiments, an alternating pattern is written to a magnetic recording medium as a sequence of symbols at a selected clock rate. A repeatable magnetic signature is generated by reading the alternating pattern from the medium, the magnetic signature having relatively weak entropy at boundaries of the symbols. A multi-bit digital sequence is extracted from the repeatable magnetic signature, the digital sequence having relatively strong entropy. The digital sequence is stored in a separate memory coupled to the medium. Access to data stored on the medium is authenticated responsive to the digital sequence stored in the separate memory.
