  • Patent number: 5697422
Abstract: A vacuum die-casting machine has a sprue cavity with sufficient depth facing the shot cylinder that the shot cylinder piston can easily crush with a pressure of less than 1000 psi the thin cylindrical shell of solidified metal which develops into the biscuit, and continue to advance after the die cavity becomes fried with molten metal to inject additional molten metal into the die cavity to make up for shrinkage porosity as the cast part cools. The runner through which the molten metal passes from the sprue cavity into the die cavity has generally spherical reservoirs adjacent circular gates to further assure the supply of the additional molten metal to make up for shrinkage in the part. In addition, the piston can be oil cooled steel to delay formation of the biscuit.

  • Patent number: 5620609
Abstract: A sedimentation or other dewatering process conducted on a suspension is controlled by filling a body (1) that is open at its top end (2) with the suspension, establishing quiescent conditions and allowing the suspension to settle to form a supernatant layer at the top end (2), generating light from an assembly (14) and measuring the amount of scattered light (19) from the supernatant layer by a collector (21) and utilizing the measured amount of scattered light to control the dewatering.

  • Patent number: 5609944
Abstract: A gravure roll and associated coating methods are disclosed that produces a uniform coating gradient on a substrate. The gravure roll comprising a series of cells arranged in circumferential line density sections in which the line densities progressively increase from section to section, and in which the cell volumes progressively decrease within each section, and in which the cell volumes at the end of one section are substantially the same as the cell volumes at the beginning of the next adjacent section.

  • Patent number: 5535569
Abstract: A sheet metal, elongate structural member is cold roll-formed from a strip of sheet metal no thicker than 1.2 mm, preferably 0.6 mm, including a central zone and two edge zones flanking the central zone and each having a free edge margin. The member includes a substantially planar web (9), a first hollow flange (10) extending along one edge of the web (9) and projecting laterally to both sides of the web, and a second hollow flange (11) extending along the other edge of the web (9) and projecting laterally to one side only of the web. The web (9) includes the central zone and the margins (17, 23) of the original strip secured flatly together by clinches (18, 29), and the hollow flanges are formed from the edge zones of the original strip excluding the margins thereof. The spacing of the clinches is selected so that the shear point of the member's section substantially coincides with the plane of the web.

  • Patent number: 5511250
Abstract: An adjustable protective helmet having a substantially rigid outer bowl-shaped shell sized larger that the user's head, and having inner padding inside of the shell sized to fit on the user's head but with a looser fit than desired. The adjustment structure includes a flexible strap extended through circumferentially spaced slots in the shell to extend both inside of and outside of the shell, to its ends outside of the shell sized to overlap one another. A rivet secures the underlying strap end to the shell. The padding between the shell slots is free from connection with the shell, and the strap in this region overlies the padding between the padding and shell and is secured to the padding. Quick release fastening pads on the overlapping strap ends allow them to be releasibly secured together. The strap can thus be tightened via the overlying strap end from outside of the shell and connected to the underlying strap end to establish the helmet fit desired.

  • Patent number: 5502978
Abstract: In general, clean cold water can be made available in a household by means of either an expensive refrigerator with a cold water dispenser or a separate cooler and bulky, replaceable water bottles. A simple solution to the problem involves a carbon filter and cooling reservoir combination for mounting in a refrigerator, a pipe system containing a faucet for dispensing cold water and returning water to the filter, and a pump/timer combination for periodically recycling the water in the pipe system through the filter, whereby cold water is always virtually instantaneously available at the faucet.

  • Patent number: 5503224
Abstract: There is a need for a device for driving plastic casing into a water well, or for removing such casing from the well without damaging the casing. This need is met by a casing drive apparatus which includes a shoe for attachment to the bottom end of a plastic well casing, an annular groove defining a pair of shoulders in the sleeve, a drive sub for insertion into the sleeve, a plurality of dogs pivotally mounted in the drive sub for engaging the shoulders, and helical springs for biasing the dogs outwardly into engagement with the shoulders, whereby, when the sub is slid into the sleeve and the dogs engage the shoulders, vertical force exerted on the sub results in movement of the dogs against the shoulders to effect vertical movement of the sleeve and consequently of the well casing.

  • Patent number: 5492166
Abstract: The shot sleeve of the invention is used in a die casting machine and defines a bore for containing molten metal to be injected into a die. At least one passageway disposed generally parallel to the bore for containing a first fluid having a fluid temperature and a fluid flow rate is provided, whereby substantially uniform temperatures can be maintained across the width of the shot sleeve by controlling the fluid temperature of the fluid flow rate or both the fluid temperature and the fluid flow rate. A die casting machine and an associated method are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5472609
Abstract: A device for backwashing a particulate mineral bed in a water conditioner includes a tubular casing; a tube co-axial with and extending through the casing beyond the ends thereof; a cap slidable on the tube for movement between a closed position on the open top end of the casing and an open position spaced apart from the top end of the casing; a spring biasing the cap to the closed position; an opening in the tube for discharging water into the cap to cause the latter to move away from the casing to the open position; a first valve including a valve body closing the bottom end of the casing; a first passage in the valve body in fluid communication with the bottom end of the tube, the first passage being normally open to the flow of water upwardly from the bed of particulate material into the tube; a ball in the body for closing the first passage when the flow of water is reversed in the tube; a second passage in the top of the body communicating with the first passage; a second valve normally closing the seco

  • Patent number: 5466981
Abstract: An electric lamp is provided which includes a reflector typically made of glass or metal and having a reflecting surface in which an area is formed to fit a locating device attached to the internal capsule light source. At the rear of the reflector is a neck portion in which are located several seating points for the light capsule locating device. Electrical connectors extend between the capsule and the base member. The positioning member is definitely located by seating ledges molded into the neck of the reflector. In manufacture, the positioning member is placed in tension and the lead wires for the lamp assembly extend through eyelets in the base which are then mechanically fastened so as to maintain a tension on the positioning member. The fact that the positioning member is under tension allows it to maintain positional accuracy during the life of the lamp.

  • Patent number: 5435373
Abstract: The fill chamber bore of a die-casting machine is lubricated and prepared for casting by inserting an elongated member into the die-end of the bore while spraying with lubricant. During withdrawal of the elongated member, a conical spray of gas directed toward the die-end drys the lubricant and sweeps vapor and flash, or solder, out of the die-end. The elongated member is preferably a flexible carrier which is guided between the bore and a path between the open die halves lateral to the bore. The lateral path is perferably defined by a tubular member supported by a vertical carriage mounted on a vertical mast for alignment of the flexible carrier with the fill chamber bore when the dies are open. The vertical mast can be mounted on a horizontal carriage moveable along a horizontal bore to preclude interference with normal operation of the die-casting machine.
