Patent number: 4654577Abstract: A permanent magnet rotary electric machine has two permanent magnet rotors rotatable within respective stator windings, and drivingly connected to an input shaft. The driving connection to one of the rotors is provided by an epicyclic gear train to which the input shaft is coupled. A second input to the gear train is provided by a gear carrier which is angularly movable about the input shaft axis by an actuator which is responsive to a difference between a desired and sensed operating condition of the machine, as for example desired and sensed values of output voltage when the machine is a generator.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 1985Date of Patent: March 31, 1987Assignee: Lucas IndustriesInventor: John R. Patent number: 4647266Abstract: An elevator structure is actuated to remove wafers individually out of a storage cassette to an elevated delivery position. The elevator is a lift blade with an arcuate upper end shaped to match the curvature of the wafers, and a groove within this end adapted to match the thickness of a wafer and retain a wafer edgewise. A wafer-holding chuck on a chuck assembly is adapted to receive a wafer from the elevator when the elevator is in the elevated delivery position. The chuck assembly is movable from the delivery position to a remote position where the chuck presents the wafer to a support member. The support member is provided with an aperture and a plurality of deformable wafer-holding clips spaced around the aperture. The chuck assembly includes a pneumatic cylinder capable of contacting a portion of each clip to urge same to an open position. The invention includes an arrangement in which the chuck is mounted on a chuck assembly in the form of a door for sealing an opening in a process chamber.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 1983Date of Patent: March 3, 1987Assignee: Varian Associates, Inc.Inventors: George L. Patent number: 4639977Abstract: A rope guard and rope bundle keeper includes an elongate, flexible body having lateral edges extending between two ends. The body has a slit at each end; the slits extend inwardly away from the lateral edges in directions perpendicular to the length of the body. The body is made of a flexible, protective material, such as thick leather. As a rope guard, the body is placed between the tie down rope and the item to be protected in a region where the rope changes direction. The rope lies against the top or outer surface of the rope guard in the region between the two slits but passes through the slits to help maintain the rope guard in place. As a rope bundle keeper, the body is wrapped around the rope bundle so that it circumscribes the bundle. The two slits are inserted one into the other so to maintain the body in a ring-like, rope bundle keeper orientation.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 1986Date of Patent: February 3, 1987Inventor: William R. Patent number: 4554157Abstract: Immunogenically active fragments of hepatitis B surface antigen, which are a glycoprotein of molecular weight about 28,000 (gp 28) and a protein of molecular weight about 23,000 (p 23), obtained by known methods by treatment of surface antigen with detergent, are prepared in micelle form substantially free from detergent. The micelles are at least as immunogenic as the unfragmented antigen from which they are derived and are useful in the preparation of hepatitis B vaccine. The detergent is removed by layering the detergent containing fragmentation product on an aqueous buffer containing a sucrose gradient and centrifuging the layered buffer when micelles containing both gp 28 and p 23 form and can be recovered in substantially detergent free form from the centrifuged layered buffer.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 1984Date of Patent: November 19, 1985Assignee: National Research Development CorporationInventors: Jacinta Skelly, Colin R. Patent number: 4548699Abstract: The system for rotating the transfer plate of a coating system in a vacuum chamber consists of a transfer plate driver assembly on the outside of the chamber at the axis and a transfer plate rotator assembly inside the chamber. The driver assembly consists of a pneumatic actuator for linear motion, a barrel cam which translates the linear motion into rotary motion with high torque at starting and stopping positions, and a rotary feedthrough all in a structural housing. The rotator assembly comprises a central hub with means for supporting the end walls, a transfer plate hub assembly and a ratchet arm connected to the rotary feedthrough. As the pressure plate assembly is drawn back by the ram, it in turn draws back the transfer plate and engages the ratchet arm with the transfer plate hub. The actuator then rotates the transfer plate. The ram then reverses direction, the ratchet arm disengages and is returned to its initial position.Type: GrantFiled: May 17, 1984Date of Patent: October 22, 1985Assignee: Varian Associates, Inc.Inventors: Martin A. Patent number: 4460080Abstract: Coin validation apparatus may be associated with a coin freed mechanism on coin receiving machines or form part of a coin sorting apparatus to check that coins are valid coins and not counterfeit. Recently, it has become particularly convenient to use the interaction between a coin and an alternating magnetic field to gauge various parameters of the coin thereby to determine if the coin is valid. In such a method the frequency of a feedback oscillator having a tuned electrical coil in its feedback loop is monitored when a coin is present adjacent the coil, the frequency is then monitored when a phase shift or time delay network is also included in its feedback loop, two parameter signals characteristic of the effect of the coin on both the inductance and the loss factor of the coil, are derived from these maintained frequencies and the two parameter signals are compared with reference values to determine if the coin is valid.Type: GrantFiled: March 4, 1982Date of Patent: July 17, 1984Assignee: Aeronautical & General Instruments LimitedInventor: George R. Patent number: 4367563Abstract: A combination pollen trap and containment apparatus for attachment to a bee hive having a frame attachable at the opening of the hive. The frame defines a pathway through which the bees must pass to gain entrance to the hive. A pollen collection screen is detachably securable in the pathway and bees entering and leaving the hive are forced to pass through the screen causing pollen pellets to be loosened from the body and legs of the bee. The screen can be easily removed when it is desired to open the hive. A pollen drawer is located below the pollen screen and serves to collect the pollen falls from the bees. A containment screen is also securable in the pathway to retain the bees within the hive. The containment screen has openings to provide for ventilation and permit the beekeeper to feed the bees during periods of confinement.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 1981Date of Patent: January 11, 1983Inventors: William M. Patent number: 4311427Abstract: A system for the automated handling and transfer of wafers individually and repetitively to and between processing stations and cassettes. A track-like conveyor engages a cassette holding a plurality of wafers in vertically facing alignment, to move same horizontally past a loading station of a processing chamber. A vertically moveable blade passes between the conveyor tracks and through the cassette to engage a wafer edgewise from below and move same upwardly to the processing chamber entrance. Vacuum means mounted to the door of the chamber entrance engages and holds the wafer during insertion into the chamber by closure of the door. Clip means are mounted within the periphery of an aperture of a vertical support plate just within the chamber entrance, to engage edgewise the wafer and support it within the plate aperture while in the processing chamber. The wafer is removed after processing by operating the foregoing apparatus in reverse order.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1979Date of Patent: January 19, 1982Assignee: Varian Associates, Inc.Inventors: George L.
