  • Patent number: 5675674
Abstract: This invention is directed toward a fiber optic modulation and demodulation system, and more particularly directed toward a telemetry system for relaying signals from sensors in remote, harsh environments. Light is modulated using one or more optical reflective grating and piezoelectric crystal combinations, and demodulated using an interferometer system. The one or more modulators are driven by the responses of one or more sensors thereby modulating one or more carrier wavelengths of a carrier light source. The modulated light signal is transmitted from the sensor or sensors, over an optical fiber, to an interferometer which is used to demodulate the reflected signals and thereby determine the responses of one or more sensors. One embodiment of the invention set forth is that of a telemetry system linking sensors within a borehole to detection and processing equipment at the surface of the earth.

  • Patent number: 5609604
Abstract: A trocar having an obturator with an obturator housing, a piercing tip and a rigid stem is disclosed. The piercing tip has a cutting edge surface and first and second spaced-apart legs generally parallel to each other extending away from the cutting edge surface. The stem is attached to the obturator housing at a first end of the obturator, and the legs of the piercing tip straddle the stem at an opposite end of the obturator. The straddling of the legs about the stem of the obturator fixes the piercing tip to the stem. The attachment of the piercing tip to the stem provides a secure attachment. The trocar is easy to manufacture and assemble, and the component parts can be readily disassembled. The piercing tip attachment is especially advantageous when the piercing tip is configured generally as a razor blade.

  • Patent number: 5607397
Abstract: An adaptor cap assembly is provided for a trocar, consisting of a base which contains an opening which is the same size as the opening of the trocar cannula handle. There is also a cap integrally attached to the base which contains a gasketing assembly wherein the assembly is of a smaller diameter than the diameter of the trocar cannula handle opening as well as the opening in the base of the adaptor cap assembly. This cap is hingedly attached to the base so that it can be flipped by using the thumb either into or out of alignment with the openings of the trocar cannula handle and the base of the adaptor cap assembly. Thus, this mechanism can be used so that a smaller diameter instrument can be placed within a larger diameter opening (with the adaptor cap in place), or, the adaptor cap can be moved out of place so that a larger diameter mechanism can be inserted within the adaptor cap assembly and into the trocar cannula handle, with both the base and the trocar cannula handle having the same size opening.

  • Patent number: 5511228
Abstract: In an optical disk drive, upon each power on or disk receipt, a mode control is set to non-operate, i.e., no commands can be received unless a mode setting command has been received. All other commands are rejected for preventing any access to an optical disk present in the drive until after a mode setting command has been received. When a mode set command is received after a power on or after each disk receipt, the mode control is set to operate which allows receipt and execution of legal commands. The mode setting requirement forces selection of write verify or not and to turn laser off or not after a predetermined time delay after completing a last command.

  • Patent number: 5432274
Abstract: Ferricinium or ferricinium-based compounds are useful as blue redox dyes suitable for monitoring various enzymatic oxidation processes. A process for preparing such dyes is proposed which involves complexing ferrocene or its derivative with a cyclodextrin. The resulting yellow inclusion complex, an intermediate of the redox dye, is then oxidized electrochemically or by a reaction with bilirubin oxidase to form blue redox dyes which exhibit absorption peaks at 620 or 650 nm. Both the reduced form and the oxidized form of the dye are water-soluble.

  • Patent number: 5410546
Abstract: The present invention discloses a method and apparatus for computing CRC codes for fixed length page buffers of user data where the user data arrives from a transmission device in variable length packets with the packet contents being out of sequential order. The received data is written to a storage device after being restored to the correct sequential order. The data packets are comprised of a header portion and a data portion. The transmission and compression methods commonly employed by the transmission device dictates that the header portion of each packet follows the data portion. The present invention computes a complete CRC code for the data stored in a page buffer in real time as the packets are received by using several registers for saving intermediate CRC codes and circuitry to combine partial CRC codes for those packet portions received out of order.

  • Patent number: 5386426
Abstract: A spectral narrowing of the output bandwidth from a laser array is obtained by feeding back to the array a portion of its emitted light, while outputting the remainder of the light emitted from the array. An optical system to accomplish this preferably includes a pair of lenses, together with a diffraction grating that can be positioned either in-line with the laser array and lenses, or in a side-arm along with one of the lenses. The lenses can be set up so that light from each laser element is fed back either to itself, or to a symmetrically located element on the opposite side of the system axis. For a multi-lobe output from the laser array, one of the lobes is used for feedback and the others as outputs, resulting in a narrowing of the output angular divergence as well as of the output bandwidth.
