  • Patent number: 9289094
Abstract: A method and apparatus for filling a steam chamber. In one exemplary embodiment, a steam chamber is placed in selective communication with a vacuum pump and a heat transfer medium, such as a source of deaerated water. The steam chamber is then placed in communication with the vacuum pump, which draws a vacuum on the steam chamber and begins removing air from the interior thereof. Once a sufficient vacuum has been drawn on the steam chamber and substantially all of the air removed therefrom, the steam chamber may be placed in communication with the heat transfer medium. In one exemplary embodiment, the heat transfer medium is deaerated water. A predetermined amount of heat transfer medium is then allowed to fill the steam chamber. Once the predetermined amount of deaerated water has been received within the steam chamber, a steam chamber may be sealed.

  • Publication number: 20160076981
Abstract: In a method for processing biological materials for flow cytometry evaluation for virus particles, a mixture including biological material and purification particles is centrifuged to prepare a centrifuged composition including a supernatant that may be further processed prior to the flow cytometry evaluation. The purification particles include porous cores functionalized to capture smaller-size impurities in a biological material sample and a porous size-exclusion shell surrounding the core to exclude larger-size components of the biological material from entering into the core. Multiple samples may be processed in multi-sample processing units. A product may contain a sealed container with the unit quantity of purification particle in a storage liquid and a kit may include such a sealed container and a centrifugal filter.

  • Patent number: 9066523
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for directing steam distribution in a steam cooker. In one exemplary embodiment, steam is directed through a steam cooker by a plenum that is in fluid communication with a steam chamber. As steam is generated within the steam chamber, the steam fills the chamber where it is directed to the plenum. In one exemplary embodiment, the plenum is formed to extend vertically along an interior wall of the steam cooker. In one exemplary embodiment, the plenum is defined between an interior wall of the steam cooker and a steam distributor that has a plurality of openings formed therein. The openings in the steam distributor allow for steam rising within the plenum to exit into the cooking chamber by passing through the openings. A pressure switch may be utilized to turn off the steam generator in the steam cooker.

  • Patent number: 9057691
Abstract: An alcohol fuel cell sensor and the resultant alcohol breath tester assembly. The disclosed housing creates an alcohol breath tester assembly that protects the electrode sensor from liquid ingress, maximizes the sample contact with the platinum electrode surface, and provides a smooth path facilitating laminar flow of the sample through the sensor. This, in turn, provides good flushing of the volume without creating eddies or other turbulence. Additionally, the housing can utilize a vapor barrier layer in the assembly and restricts the layer from touching the electrode surface.

  • Publication number: 20150154347
Abstract: Methods and systems for designing the sequences of multiple nucleic acid strands intended to hybridize in solution via a prescribed reaction pathway are described. Sequence design is formulated as a multistate optimization problem using a set of target test tubes containing different subsets of the strands to represent reactant, intermediate, and product states of the system. Each target test tube contains a set of desired “on-target” complexes, each with a target secondary structure and target concentration, and a set of undesired “off-target” complexes, each with vanishing target concentration. Optimization of the equilibrium ensemble properties of the target test tubes may implement both a positive design paradigm, explicitly designing for on-pathway states, and a negative design paradigm, explicitly designing against off-pathway states.
