  • Patent number: 8973068
Abstract: Video content may be delivered in a wireless network based on network load information relating to radio interfaces for the wireless network. A method may include receiving a request, from a set-top box, for video content from the set-top box to the wireless network and determining, based on the load information, whether a portion of the wireless network corresponding to the set-top box is in a first state or a second state. The network may further include transmitting the video content when the portion of the network corresponding to the set-top box is in the first state and delaying transmission of the video content when the portion of the network corresponding to the set-top box is in the second state, until the portion of the network corresponding to the set-top box enters the first state.

  • Publication number: 20150056947
Abstract: A mobile device may manage the battery of the mobile device by controlling radio power usage. In one implementation, a mobile device may determine a target power usage associated with a radio of the mobile device, the radio implementing a radio link with a base station associated with a cellular wireless network. The mobile device may also determine an actual power usage associated with the radio of the mobile device and compare the actual power usage to the target power usage. The mobile device may communicate with the base station, and based on the comparison of the actual power usage to the target power usage, to cause the base station to reduce a bit rate associated with the radio link.

  • Patent number: 8958403
Abstract: An outdoor broadband unit includes a wide area network (WAN) side device, and a local area network (LAN) side device. The LAN side device provides a first stay alive communication to the WAN side device, and the WAN side device performs a soft reset based on the stay alive communication. The LAN side device also receives, based on the stay alive communication, a soft reset result from the WAN side device, and determines, based on the soft reset result, whether the soft reset of the WAN side device is successful or unsuccessful. The LAN side device further provides a second stay alive communication to the WAN side device when the soft reset of the WAN side device is successful.

  • Publication number: 20140362777
Abstract: One or more devices may receive, from a user device via a first communication layer associated with a first network device, a request to add a second communication layer associated with a second network device; generate an instruction, based on receiving the request, to aggregate first data flow and the second data flow, to be provided via the first and second communication layers; and provide, to the second network device and based on generating the instruction, a response to indicate that the one or more devices are prepared to aggregate the first and second data flows. The response may include an instruction to direct the second network device to establish a simultaneous connection with the user device while the user device is connected to the first network device and to establish the connection with the user device via the second communication layer.

  • Patent number: 8886780
Abstract: A device monitors temperature readings from a sensor associated with an outdoor broadband unit. When the temperature readings increase above a stored threshold value, the device sends, to a device at a core network, an alert signal that invokes, at the core network, an emergency profile associated with the outdoor broadband unit. When the temperature readings decrease below the stored threshold value, the device sends, to the device at the core network, a normal signal that invokes, at the core network, a default profile associated with the outdoor broadband unit.

  • Patent number: 8879387
Abstract: A device receives a packet provided in a wireless access network, and determines whether the packet is a payload packet or an acknowledgment (Ack) packet. The device also allocates, when the packet is an acknowledgement packet, the acknowledgment packet to an expedited priority queue, and allocates, when the packet is a payload packet, the payload packet to a regular priority queue. The device further delivers one or more acknowledgment packets provided in the expedited priority queue prior to delivering one or more payload packets provided in the regular priority queue.

  • Publication number: 20140307549
Abstract: A system may receive a request to receive a particular quality of service level for traffic flow between a user device and an over-the-top application server that provides an over-the-top application service. The over-the-top application server may be outside of a service provider network. The system may determine that the user device is to receive the particular quality of service level for the over-the-top application service based on receiving the request. The system may cause the traffic flow to receive the particular quality of service level based on determining that the user device is to receive the particular quality of service level. The traffic flow may be transmitted using the service provider network. The system may determine usage information associated with the traffic flow, where the usage information identifies the user device and the particular quality of service level. The system may provide the usage information.

  • Publication number: 20140219177
Abstract: A network device within an outdoor broadband unit receives, via Ethernet over coaxial cable signals, Internet Protocol (IP) data traffic originating from a device within a local area network (LAN). The IP data traffic is buffered in a memory within the outdoor broadband unit. A forwarding plane module of the network device sends the IP data traffic toward a destination via an air interface for a wide area network (WAN). The network device receives, via different Ethernet over coaxial cable signals, IP control traffic originating from the device within the LAN. A control plane module of the network device implements the instructions in the IP control traffic to initiate a test function for the network device.

  • Publication number: 20140211698
Abstract: An approach for providing application-aware load balancing is provided. A load balancing platform at a base station receives application information specifying an application or type of service utilized by a mobile device and determines allocation of a plurality of carriers based on the received application information to provide load balancing across the plurality of carriers. The platform generates mapping information indicating a mapping of a plurality of applications to one or more of the plurality of carriers, wherein the application information includes the generated mapping information.

  • Patent number: 8718085
Abstract: An outdoor broadband unit implements full IP-based routing between a wide area network (WAN)-side interface (such as a Long-Term Evolution (LTE) air interface) and a local area network (LAN)-side interface (such as a home network using MoCA protocol). The outdoor broadband unit maintains a routing table for all connections through an internal routing system based on matching between WAN-side Internet Protocol (IP) addresses and/or ports and LAN-side IP addresses and/or ports. The outdoor broadband unit may support both connection-oriented transport layer routing (such as Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)) and connectionless transport layer routing (such as User Datagram Protocol (UDP)).
