  • Patent number: 9014074
Abstract: Embodiments describe overlaying a broadcast multicast channel on top of a unicast network. Messages can be generated by protocols in a broadcast/multicast (BCMC) stack and tunneled through an IRTP of a serving access node. These messages can be transmitted on a BCMC channel and/or a unicast channel. Other messages can be generated by protocols in a unicast stack and tunneled to a B-IRTP of a BCMC Access node and transmitted on a BCMC channel to an access terminal.

  • Patent number: 8959230
Abstract: A method and apparatus for negotiating capability information for a broadcast service in a communication system. In one embodiment, the generic capabilities are pre-configured in BSC, which provides the generic capability information to MS and to PDSN based on a listing of available BC services and the corresponding capabilities. Another embodiment pre-configures PDSN with the generic capability information. According to still another embodiment, PDSN is pre-configured with the generic capability information, wherein the MS queries the PDSN directly for generic capability information via a PPP connection. In yet another embodiment, the MS queries the PCF, which in turn queries all of the PDSN in the system. The PDSN responsible for the BC responds to the query. Where multiple PDSNs may support the BC, the first to respond using multicast addressing obviates the need for the others to respond.

  • Patent number: 8781482
Abstract: A method for managing a point-to-point call initiated (702) between a wireless mobile station (114, 400) and a remote party while the mobile is receiving broadcast content via one or more multi-user forward-link broadcast channels (508). The mobile station notifies (704) the network (110) of preferences as to prescribed categories of operating conditions, such as whether to continue receiving the broadcast content, and election between the point-to-point call and broadcast content concurrently. In accordance with the preferences, communications are conducted (706) in one of the following operating modes: (1) conducting the point-to-point call and discontinuing reception of the broadcast, (2) conducting the point-to-point call and continuing reception of the broadcast, (3) aborting completion of the point-to-point call and continuing reception of the broadcast.

  • Patent number: 8611868
Abstract: A wireless communications network includes roving subscriber-stations and base stations receiving broadcast programs from a content server. A subscriber-station evaluates whether a desired program is available from a subject base station. According to this evaluation, the subscriber-station takes steps to (1) receive the desired program on a shared channel for reception by multiple subscriber-stations, or (2) initiate base station delivery of the desired program to the subscriber-station on an individual channel. Responsive to a message from a subject subscriber-station identifying a desired program, a base station either (1) continues transmitting the desired program upon a shared channel, (2) starts transmitting the desired program on a shared channel, or (3) sends the subject subscriber-station a channel assignment message and commences transmission of the desired program on the assigned individual channel.

  • Patent number: 8254364
Abstract: A route protocol is established whereby a mobile device can communicate to a multitude of (receiving) base stations though a tunnel created through a serving base station. A message that includes a Route Creation Header can be transmitted by the mobile device to create the tunnel. The Route Creation Header is reviewed by the receiving base station while the mobile device is in a Waiting-To-Open State. Various errors might occur with respect to the Route Creation Header. These errors can be conveyed to the mobile device by base station by setting one or more error code fields. Once the errors are resolved, another attempt to create a tunnel with base station can be made, if desired.

  • Patent number: 8208388
Abstract: Method for segmented message transmission wherein each message is first divided into segments and the segments are fragmented. A segment parameter is applied to each segment, and a segment identifier to each fragment. The fragments are provided to a lower level for preparation into frames for transmission. One embodiment is applied to the transmission of short duration messages, such as control messages. A timer is used to detect an erasure within a plurality of transmission frames, wherein the timer uses an average inter-arrival time period between transmitted frames to determine a missing frame. In one embodiment, the time period is given as ?*AIT, wherein ? is a constant value, and AIT is the average inter-arrival time of frames.

  • Patent number: 8145228
Abstract: In a communication system (100), a method and apparatus provide for efficient control of call requests from mobile stations (102-104) to base station (101). Mobile station (102-104) receives an initial call request block probability from base station (101), determines an elapsed time from an effective time of the initial call request block probability, and adjusts the initial call request block probability based on an elapsed time. Mobile station (102-104) uses the adjusted initial call request to block call request.

  • Patent number: 8126127
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the provision of broadcast service information is disclosed. In a wireless communication system supporting a broadcast service, a service ID is provided to identify the broadcast service. The service ID is sent to a base station. The base station configures a broadcast service parameters message that includes the service ID. The base station then transmits the broadcast service parameters message to a mobile station. The mobile station receives the broadcast service parameters message and uses the service ID in the broadcast service parameters message to determine availability of the broadcast service in an adjacent sector.

  • Patent number: 8126469
Abstract: Techniques for minimizing call setup latency are disclosed. In one aspect, a channel assignment message is sent with a flag to direct the use of previously negotiated service parameters. This aspect eliminates the need for service negotiation messages. In another aspect, a channel assignment message is sent with an active set identifier instead of an active set and its parameters. This aspect reduces the transmission time of the channel assignment message. In yet another aspect, call setup without paging is facilitated by a mobile station (106) sending a pilot strength measurement message between active communication sessions, such that a channel assignment message can be used for mobile station terminated call setup without the need for mobile station paging and related messages.
