  • Patent number: 7466741
Abstract: The call processing state machines defined by the CDMA standards (e.g., IS-95 and IS-2000) are modified to include a “traffic channel” substate indicative of the mobile station processing at least one active call. Call control (CC) state machines of various types are also provided to control the processing of the calls. To process one or more calls concurrently, a CC state machine is instantiated upon receiving an indication to process a particular call. The instantiated CC state machine is identified with, and used to control the processing of, the particular call. Upon receiving an indication to process an additional call, another CC state machine can be instantiated for the additional call. Each call to be processed can also be associated with a particular a service option connection, which includes information indicative of a set of parameters (e.g., the physical channels) to be used for data transmission.

  • Publication number: 20080291868
Abstract: A route protocol is established whereby a mobile device can communicate to a multitude of (receiving) base stations though a tunnel created through a serving base station. A message that includes a Route Creation Header can be transmitted by the mobile device to create the tunnel. The Route Creation Header is reviewed by the receiving base station while the mobile device is in a Waiting-To-Open State. Various errors might occur with respect to the Route Creation Header. These errors can be conveyed to the mobile device by base station by setting one or more error code fields. Once the errors are resolved, another attempt to create a tunnel with base station can be made, if desired.

  • Publication number: 20080247360
Abstract: In a communication system in which a gateway entity is linked to a plurality of infrastructure entities which in turn are operable to communicate with an access terminal, the access terminal needs first to establish a data attachment point (DAP) with one of the infrastructure entities. Handoff of the DAP from one infrastructure entity to another infrastructure entity is initiated by the access terminal. The access terminal weighs factors such as the link conditions with the various infrastructure entities, the time since the last DAP handoff, and time duration communicating with the current infrastructure entity before proceeding with the DAP handoff.

  • Patent number: 7417976
Abstract: Techniques for minimizing call setup latency are disclosed. In one aspect, a channel assignment message is sent with a flag to direct the use of previously negotiated service parameters. This aspect eliminates the need for service negotiation messages. In another aspect, a channel assignment message is sent with an active set identifier instead of an active set and its parameters. This aspect reduces the transmission time of the channel assignment message. In yet another aspect, call setup without paging is facilitated by a mobile station (106) sending a pilot strength measurement message between active communication sessions, such that a channel assignment message can be used for mobile station terminated call setup without the need for mobile station paging and related messages.

  • Patent number: 7373157
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing short-slot-cycle paging information from a communication device (CD) to a base station (BS) includes receiving system parameter messages from the BS, determining whether the BS is capable of short-slot-cycle paging, and indicating that the CD is also capable for short-slot-cycle paging if the BS is determined to be capable of short-slot-cycle paging. A method in a BS for providing short-slot-cycle paging includes indicating to a CD that the BS is capable of short-slot-cycle paging, receiving information from the CD, indicating that the CD is also capable for short-slot-cycle paging, and paging the CD based on the received information.

  • Publication number: 20080076348
Abstract: A wireless communications network includes roving subscriber-stations and base stations receiving broadcast programs from a content server. A subscriber-station evaluates whether a desired program is available from a subject base station. According to this evaluation, the subscriber-station takes steps to (1) receive the desired program on a shared channel for reception by multiple subscriber-stations, or (2) initiate base station delivery of the desired program to the subscriber-station on an individual channel. Responsive to a message from a subject subscriber-station identifying a desired program, a base station either (1) continues transmitting the desired program upon a shared channel, (2) starts transmitting the desired program on a shared channel, or (3) sends the subject subscriber-station a channel assignment message and commences transmission of the desired program on the assigned individual channel.

  • Patent number: 7349425
Abstract: Method and apparatus for providing a broadcast system parameter message in a wireless communication system supporting a broadcast service. In one embodiment, the message identifies a service option number corresponding to a set of broadcast parameters. In an alternate embodiment, the message identifies a block of bytes corresponding to broadcast parameters. The message may be transmitted on a channel for transmitting overhead information. For a system supporting a broadcast service, the message identifies a protocol stack for processing broadcast content.

  • Patent number: 7328022
Abstract: A method for managing a point-to-point call initiated (702) between a wireless mobile station (114, 400) and a remote party while the mobile is receiving broadcast content via one or more multi-user forward-link broadcast channels (508). The mobile station notifies (704) the network (110) of preferences as to prescribed categories of operating conditions, such as whether to continue receiving the broadcast content, and election between the point-to-point call and the broadcast content should network resources be unable to conduct the point-to-point call and broadcast content concurrently. In accordance with the preferences, communications are conducted (706) in one of the following operating modes: (1) conducting the point-to-point call and discontinuing reception of the broadcast, (2) conducting the point-to-point call and continuing reception of the broadcast, (3) aborting completion of the point-to-point call and continuing reception of the broadcast.

  • Publication number: 20070265014
Abstract: An apparatus and method for communications of scheduling information of reverse link transmissions are disclosed. A base station controller determines scheduling of a reverse link supplemental channel transmission for a mobile station in a communication system (100). The base station controller groups the mobile station in a group of mobile stations and assigns a forward link channel assignment channel to the group of mobile stations. A transceiver (400) incorporates information relating to the determined scheduling in the assigned forward link common assignment channel and transmits the assigned forward link common assignment channel to the mobile station for scheduling the reverse link supplemental channel transmission. The mobile station receives the assigned forward link common assignment channel.

  • Publication number: 20070243871
Abstract: A method and system for a handoff in a broadcast communication system is disclosed. A subscriber assisted handoff is impractical in a broadcast communication system due to e.g., a high signaling load, a difficulty to synchronize the broadcast transmission. On the other hand, the small number of broadcast channels enables the subscriber station to perform the handoff autonomously. To streamline the autonomous handoff decision process, several distinct sets of pilot identifiers and rules for transitioning among the sets are defined. To fully integrate broadcast services with the services provided by the cellular telephone systems in a subscriber environment, a method for various handoff scenarios are analyzed.
