  • Publication number: 20180014270
Abstract: To determine a location of a client device in a wireless network having at least first and second network devices, with known locations, one of the network devices transmits a message to the other network device and the other network device responds with an acknowledgement message. A client device receives the message and the acknowledgement message as well as respective times indicating actual times at which the message and the acknowledgement message were processed by one of the first and second network devices. The client device determines its location based on the times at which it received the message and the acknowledgement message and the difference between the actual processing times. This location may be refined by determining an angle between the client device and at least one of the network devices having multiple antennas and being configured for steered beam communications.

  • Patent number: 9860823
Abstract: An access point including a transceiver having first and second physical layers to communicate at first and second data rates, respectively. The transceiver receives a request from a first client station to reserve first or second sub-channel of a channel for transmitting data at the first or second data rate. In response to receiving the request from the first client station, the transceiver transmits a response to allow the first client station to transmit data and prevent a second client station from transmitting data while the first client station transmits data to the access point. In response to the first client station receiving the response, the first physical layer receives data from the first client station without interference from the second client station.

  • Publication number: 20170332385
Abstract: This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatuses for allocating bandwidth resources to wireless network devices. In some implementations, an access point (AP) may allocate uplink resource units (RUs) to a given device (STA) based on the amount of UL data the STA has queued for transmission to the AP and a priority level of the UL data. Each STA associated with the AP may transmit a buffer status report (BSR) indicating an amount of queued UL data buffered in the respective STA and one or more access categories or traffic identifiers (TIDs) to which the queued data belongs. The AP may generate an RU allocation scheme based on the BSRs received from each of its associated STAs. The RU allocation scheme may indicate the size and number of RUs to be allocated to each STA for UL transmissions. The AP may receive UL data from a STA via the RUs allocated to that STA.

  • Patent number: 9820333
Abstract: A first device transmits a first packet to a second device, the first packet including a first value indicative of a priority for the first device to become a master in a peer-to-peer (P2P) wireless communication network. The first device receives a second packet transmitted by the second device, wherein the second packet includes a second value indicative of a priority for the second device to become the master in the P2P wireless communication network. The first device compares the first value with the second value, and determines whether the first device is to become the master or a client in the P2P wireless communication network based on the comparison of the first value with the second value.

  • Publication number: 20170325202
Abstract: The present disclosure provides various aspects related to techniques for generating trigger frames, at an access point (AP), that reduce the overhead associated with triggering an uplink transmission from the wireless station (STA). Features of the present disclosure achieve this by, for example, utilizing a single per-user information field of the trigger to signal a plurality of random access resource units that may be allocated to the one or more STAs in the network. Such a technique is an improvement over the conventional system that require each random access resource unit to be signaled separately in a separate per-user information field (thus increasing the overhead). Additionally, aspects of the present disclosure allow the AP to effectively signal to the STA whether the one or more resources allocated to the at least one STA are a single user resource unit allocation or a multi-user resource unit allocation.

  • Publication number: 20170325178
Abstract: The present disclosure provides various aspects related to techniques for generating trigger frames, at an AP, that reduce the overhead associated with triggering an uplink transmission from the STA. In some examples, the STA may also calculate its transmit power by decoding a spatial reuse subfield of the trigger frame from the AP and identifying downlink pathloss measurements of the trigger frame. Accordingly, the STA may identify acceptable interference level of the AP and calculate a transmit power in order to minimize interference at the AP. In some aspects, the STA may transmit its uplink packets to a different AP on one or more punctured channels at the calculated transmit power of the STA.

  • Publication number: 20170317869
Abstract: Channel data for a plurality of OFDM tones for one or more spatial or space-time streams are determined. A plurality of angle values associated with the one or more spatial or space-time streams and the one or more OFDM tones of the plurality of OFDM tones are determined. For each of the one or more spatial or space time streams, a per-tone signal to noise ratio (PT-SNR) associated with one or more OFDM tone of the plurality of OFDM tones is determined, and an average signal to noise ratio (avg-SNR) is determined by averaging signal to noise ratio (SNR) values corresponding to one or more OFDM tones of the plurality of OFDM tones. A feedback report is generated to include at least i) the plurality of angle values, ii) the PT-SNRs, and iii) the avg-SNR.

  • Publication number: 20170303275
Abstract: Method and systems are disclosed for qualifying a wireless device as frequency hopping device. In some aspects, an access point (AP) may determine a frequency hopping pattern for the wireless device, and then allocate a sequence of unique resource units to the wireless device based on the frequency hopping pattern. Each of the unique resource units include a different set of frequency subcarriers. The AP may receive a series of uplink orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) transmissions from the wireless device on the allocated sequence of unique resource units.

  • Patent number: 9769071
Abstract: A first communication device transmits one or more first communication frames during a transmit opportunity period (TXOP) of the first communication device via a first composite channel. A control frame is generated, wherein the control frame includes information indicating a bandwidth of the first composite channel. After the one or more first communication frames have been transmitted, the first communication device transmits, during the TXOP, the control frame via the first composite channel. Information from a response frame that indicates a bandwidth of a second composite communication channel is extracted, the response frame having been transmitted by a second communication device and received by the first communication device during the TXOP. The first communication device transmits one or more second communication frames during the TXOP, wherein the one or more communication frames span the second composite communication channel and do not span the entire first composite communication channel.

  • Publication number: 20170250785
Abstract: A preamble of a physical layer (PHY) data unit that conforms to a first communication protocol is generated. The preamble includes a legacy field that is formatted according to a second communication protocol, and a signal field having a first orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbol and a second OFDM symbol. The first OFDM symbol (i) immediately follows the legacy field and (ii) is modulated using binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation, whereas a third communication protocol specifies that an OFDM symbol, defined by the third communication protocol, that immediately follows the legacy field is modulated using BPSK modulation rotated by 90 degrees (Q-BPSK). The second OFDM symbol (i) immediately follows the first OFDM symbol and (ii) is modulated using Q-BPSK to indicate to a receiver device that conforms to the first communication protocol that the data unit conforms to the first communication protocol.

  • Patent number: 9736724
Abstract: A data portion of a physical layer (PHY) data unit is generated to include a service field that consists of eight or less bits. When it is determined that the PHY data unit is to be generated according to a first mode of operation of a long range communication protocol, the PHY data unit is generated according to a first format to include the data portion. When it is determined that the PHY data unit is to be generated according to a second mode of operation of the long range communication protocol, the PHY data unit is generated according to a second format to include the data portion, including using a slower clock rate as compared to the first format. The second mode of operation provides longer range communications as compared to the first mode of operation.
