  • Patent number: 7792488
Abstract: A signal strength that is associated with a first wireless communications channel is detected. Electromagnetic energy is transmitted over the first wireless communications channel in response to the signal strength being sufficiently weak. A determination is made whether a handoff should be made to a second wireless communications channel having a signal that is weaker than a signal of the first wireless communications channel. Related systems and methods are described.

  • Publication number: 20100111097
Abstract: A system (10) and method (20) includes transmitting (22) Service Related (SR) data (15, 16, or 17) from each one of a plurality of networks (11, 12, and 13), receiving and processing (24) at a device (14) the SR data from each of the plurality of networks, and identifying (26) at the device a first network that satisfies a Bid Policy (BP) (19) responsive to the receiving and processing of the SR data. The identifying can be done by comparing (28) SR data with the BP. The method can then establish communications (34) preferentially with the “first network” responsive to the identifying. Note that the SR data can include terms of an offer for service including a financial term. The BP as well as the SR can have a plurality of components such as a Cost-of-Service (CoS), a Quality-of-Service (QoS), and a data rate among others.

  • Publication number: 20100048234
Abstract: A system (10) and method (50 or 70) of dynamic allocation of spectrum for a communication device where a UHF band is currently unused for licensed television broadcasting involves determining (51) a location of a user device using GPS or other signals (such as television broadcast signals) received at the user device using signal strength or time distance of arrival of those signals. The method can determine (52) which UHF television broadcast channels are available for use by the user device and determine (53) a maximum allowed transmission power for a given channel based on signal strength for the given channel and on adjacent channels before transmitting (54) the maximum allowed transmission power and location by the user device to a remote server for sharing information. The method can receive (55) polygon endpoints from a television broadcast defining the location of usable reception of the television broadcast.

  • Publication number: 20100046440
Abstract: A system (10) and method (50) of dynamic allocation of spectrum for a communication device involves receiving (51) a user channel map (UCM) on a control channel that is outside the band of interest. The UCM can include at least boundary location information for one or more channel resources within a UHF band and communication parameters. The method can determine (52) at least an approximate location for the communication device, compare (56) the approximate location with the boundary location information, and determine (57) which channels can avoid co-channel and adjacent channel interference with licensed users and other unlicensed users based on the comparison, boundary location information, and the communication parameters. The UCM can further include communication parameters such as maximum allowable transmit power, duty cycle, and in use information by other unlicensed and licensed users.

  • Publication number: 20100017418
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of presenting a topology comprising a reference with at least one sub-reference, and an apparatus for presenting the topology. The method comprises the steps of: (110) obtaining topology data representing the topology, —(120) processing the topology data so as to represent the topology by means of a visual object (250) associated with the reference, said object being configured to be visualized in any of a plurality of visual modes, wherein a specific one of the one or more sub-references is associated with a specific one of the plurality of visual modes. A user may browse hierarchical information (the topology data), using the visual object, e.g. by rotating the visual object to a desired visual mode in order to find a desired element of the topology.

  • Patent number: 7635571
Abstract: Methods are disclosed for determining minute quantities of an analyte in a medium suspected of containing the analyte. One method comprises treating a medium suspected of containing an analyte under conditions such that the analyte, if present, causes a substrate having an oxidant cleavable linker and a photosensitizer to come into close proximity. The photosensitizer generates singlet oxygen which oxidatively cleaves the linker to form a product which can be detected in a sandwich detection assay such as LOCI. The amount of product detected is related to the amount of analyte in the medium. Compositions, kits, and compounds are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 7499708
Abstract: Selected data packets that were broadcast over millimeter microwave frequencies to millimeter microwave receiving stations in a millimeter microwave broadcasting system footprint are rebroadcast. Rebroadcasting is selected based upon an indication that is received from a subset of the millimeter microwave receiving stations, that the one or more data packets were not received successfully by the subset of the millimeter microwave receiving stations. Selective rebroadcasting may be performed based upon statistical analysis of indications that are received from the subset of the millimeter microwave receiving stations.
