  • Patent number: 4209471
Abstract: A liquid-liquid extraction method for recovering O,O-di(lower)alkyldithiophosphoric acid of increased purity from a crude mixture in which it is contained comprises intimately contacting said mixture with an acidic aqueous solution to form two liquid phases whereby the concentration of the thiophosphoric acid in the aqueous phase is increased; separating the two phases; contacting the aqueous phase with a stable, water-immiscible, volatile, organic solvent to form two liquid phases whereby the concentration of the thiophosphoric acid in the organic solvent is increased; separating the two phases; and vaporizing the organic solvent to recover high purity O,O-di(lower)alkyl dithiophosphoric acid.

  • Patent number: 4175116
Abstract: This invention relates to an improved process for preparing cyanogen chloride by reacting chlorine and hydrogen cyanide in a manganous chloride-containing aqueous medium to form gaseous cyanogen chloride and dissolved hydrogen chloride and to the subsequent conversion of the hydrogen chloride to chlorine employing manganese dioxide and nitric acid as cyclic reagents.

  • Patent number: 4155989
Abstract: Mixtures of nitric acid and sulfuric acid containing in excess of 70% sulfuric acid are denitrated by the addition of sufficient sulfur dioxide to such mixtures to convert the nitric acid to gaseous nitrogen oxides and vaporizing them from the solution in which they are formed. The process is particularly valuable for the treatment of spent nitration acids.

  • Patent number: 4141961
Abstract: This invention is a process for producing gaseous hydrogen sulfide in concentrated form from sulfur dioxide obtained from a dilute gas source by (1) reacting the SO.sub.2 with Na.sub.2 CO.sub.3 to form Na.sub.2 SO.sub.3, (2) reducing the Na.sub.2 SO.sub.3 to Na.sub.2 S, (3) reacting the Na.sub.2 S with NaHCO.sub.3 to form H.sub.2 S and Na.sub.2 CO.sub.3, (4) recycling part of the Na.sub.2 CO.sub.3 to the SO.sub.2 reaction step, (5) reacting the remainder of the Na.sub.2 CO.sub.3 with CO.sub.2 and H.sub.2 O to form NaHCO.sub.3 and (6) recycling the NaHCO.sub.3 to the H.sub.2 S formation reaction.

  • Patent number: 4141963
Abstract: This invention relates to a process for the thermal decomposition of metal nitrates which decompose below a temperature of about 400.degree. C. to form the corresponding metal oxide as well as oxides of nitrogen, said process involving distributing said nitrate over previously formed oxide and conducting said decomposition under "muffle" conditions such that said decomposition occurs in an atmosphere predominantly comprised of the vapors evolved during the thermal decomposition.

Date of Patent: February 27, 1979
    Assignee: Ciba-Geigy Corporation
    Inventor: Ralph Miller
  • Patent number: 4131642
Abstract: Isobutylene, hydrogen cyanide and sulfuric acid are reacted to produce tertiary butyl formamide, which is hydrolyzed by sodium hydroxide to produce tertiary butyl amine. The tertiary butyl amine is removed by vaporization and the residue is treated with sulphuric acid and methanol and is distilled to recover formate values as methyl formate or sodium formate. There is additionally recovered crystalline sodium sulfate and a water immiscible yellow organic phase.

  • Patent number: 4094958
Abstract: A process for the separation of ammonia from a gaseous mixture containing ammonia and hydrogen cyanide which comprises contacting said gaseous mixture in an absorption stage with an absorbent liquor comprising an acidified ammonium nitrate solution thereby selectively absorbing ammonia from said gaseous mixture and forming a solution of diminished acidity, adding nitric acid to the ammonium nitrate-containing solution of diminished acidity to restore its acidity to its initial level and recycling said restored solution to said absorption stage.

  • Patent number: 3961932
Abstract: A process for uniformly coating granular fertilizer formulations with one or more chelated metallic micronutrients which comprises the following steps: blending a granular fertilizer formulation in, for instance, a rotary drum mixer; spraying, while the blending continues 1 to 5% by weight of an aqueous solution or slurry containing one or more chelated metallic micronutrients, as for example, Na.sub.2 Zn EDTA, onto said fertilizer formulation; and adding, before or after said spraying, and while the blending continues 1 to 4% by weight of a finely divided water-absorbent additive, such as, a synthetic calcium silicate or finely divided silica, to the fertilizer formulation. The finished fertilizer formulation then contains 0.05 to 0.5% by weight of micronutrient.
