  • Publication number: 20020075994
Abstract: A method and system for obtaining desired subsurface views of a patient target site are disclosed. The system includes a scan-data file for storing, in digital form, volumetric scan data of a surgical site of a patient, a pointer for indicating the position and orientation of desired views, and a display screen for placement near the patient target region. A computational device operatively connected to the data file, pointer, and display screen functions to reconstruct a 2-D shadowgraph images of the patient region from the position and orientation of the pointer. By moving the pointer to selected positions and orientations, the user can view optimal and desired shadowgraph images of the patient in real time.

  • Publication number: 20020077544
Abstract: The invention provides a system for enhancing the ability of a surgeon to access a target site within a patient. The system includes a data file containing volumetric scan data of a region of the patient that includes the target site, a display device, and a movable imagining tool for producing on the display device, an image of visible patient structure seen by the tool. A computer in the system operates to (i) determine the position and/or orientation of the tool in the frame of reference of the patient, (ii) identify the scan-data coordinates (either x,y or x,y,z coordinates) of the target site, and (iii) project on the video image on the display device, indicia that indicate the lateral position of the target site with respect to the patient structure imaged on the display device.

  • Publication number: 20020010384
Abstract: An apparatus for use in calibrating lens position and field of view in an endoscope is disclosed. The apparatus includes tracking elements mounted at fixed positions on the endoscope's shaft, a holder providing an object or pattern to be viewed by the endoscope, when the endoscope is placed in the holder, and positional elements mounted on the holder at known positions. A processor in the apparatus operates to determine the positions of the tracking and positional elements, with the endoscope shaft received in the holder guide, and calculate from the determined positions, the coordinates of the endoscope lens with respect to the tracking elements, and the field of the view of the lens. Also disclosed is a calibration method which employs the apparatus.

  • Publication number: 20010037064
Abstract: An apparatus and method for adjusting the orientation of a surgical viewing instrument, which may be used to view a patient target site and any intervening tissue from outside the body, as the position of the instrument is changed by a user. The instrument is attached to a robotic arm assembly and is movable by both the user and the robot. As the user moves the instrument to a different position, the robot automatically corrects the orientation of the instrument to maintain a viewing trajectory defined by the axis of the instrument and a target coordinate in the patient target site. In another aspect there is an apparatus and method for using a surgical robot and attached ultrasound probe to track a moving target in a patient's body. The ultrasound probe has a pressure sensor in its tip, which is maintained in contact with a tissue surface at a specific location at a constant pressure.

  • Publication number: 20010029333
Abstract: A surgical navigation system has a computer with a memory and display connected to a surgical instrument or pointer and position tracking system, so that the location and orientation of the pointer are tracked in real time and conveyed to the computer. The computer memory is loaded with data from an MRI, CT, or other volumetric scan of a patient, and this data is utilized to dynamically display 3-dimensional perspective images in real time of the patient's anatomy from the viewpoint of the pointer. The images are segmented and displayed in color to highlight selected anatomical features and to allow the viewer to see beyond obscuring surfaces and structures. The displayed image tracks the movement of the instrument during surgical procedures. The instrument may include an imaging device such as an endoscope or ultrasound transducer, and the system displays also the image for this device from the same viewpoint, and enables the two images to be fused so that a combined image is displayed.
