  • Patent number: 7889162
Abstract: A display device comprising a light guide (12), a front plate (14), and an intermediate electromechanically operable foil (16). Two electrode layers (22, 23) are arranged on either side of the foil (16) to induce electrostatic forces on the foil (16) and to bring selected portions of the foil into contact with the light guide (12), thereby extracting light from the light guide (12). The second electrode layer (22) is arranged on the opposite side of the light guide (12) with reference to the foil (16), and separated from the light guide (12) by means of a refractive layer (28). As no electrode layer is required on the light guide itself, the light path of rays extracted from the light guide is cleaner, and the absorption of light is reduced. The light guide can have a thickness such that the light extracted from the light guide per unit length is sufficient to allow for line-at-a-time addressing.

  • Patent number: 7883238
Abstract: A light-emitting device, comprising at least a first light source (101) and a second light source (102) is provided. The light source further comprises a first collimating means (111) for collimating light from the first light-source and a second collimating means (112) for collimating light from said second light source wherein the output areas of the collimating means at least partly overlaps. A light guiding means (107) is arranged between said light sources and said collimating means for guiding light from the first light source to the first light collimating means, and from the second light source to the second collimating means. A light-emitting device of the present invention can provide well mixed and collimated light even though there is a distance between the light sources and the collimating means.

  • Patent number: 7866849
Abstract: A light-emitting device (100) is provided, comprising four light sources (101, 102, 103, 104) and a collimating element (105) for collimating and mixing the light from the light sources. The light-collimating element comprises three V-shaped profile surfaces (110, 120, 130) arranged with their edges (115, 125, 135) towards the light sources. The V-shaped profile surfaces are provided with dichroic filters that transmits light from the light sources that they are arranged in front of, and reflects light from the remaining light sources. Such a device is capable of collimating and mixing the light from the four light sources, such that essentially the same degree of collimation is achieved for all four light sources.

  • Publication number: 20100295067
Abstract: The present invention provides a light collimating structure (102) comprising a first collimator (131) collimating light of a first property and at least one second collimator (141) collimating light of a second property, where the receiving areas (132, 142) of the collimators at least partly overlap and where the output areas (133, 143) of the collimators partly overlap. The at least two collimators act essentially independently from each other. Hence, the collimators can be positioned independently from each other, in order to provide good collimation for each of the light sources of the lighting unit. Further, the collimators may be designed independently from each other such that a good light mixing is obtained.

  • Publication number: 20100296312
Abstract: A high efficiency lighting system (100) is described that has a small etendue. This can be used, for example, for backlighting a display device such as a liquid crystal display (LCD), projection displays, as well as for general lighting purposes. A portion of the light from a light emitting device die (101) falls onto a fluorescent material (105,106), such as phosphor. Dichroic mirrors (107,109) prevent the light generated by the fluorescent material to return to the light-emitting device. The mirrors may also provide collimation of the generated light and the remainder of the light from the light-emitting device. In this way a high efficiency system is realized because little or no generated light is absorbed and the generated light does not have to travel through a fluorescent material layer and thus has a high chance to go in the desired direction.

  • Publication number: 20100289039
Abstract: Proposed is a light emitting apparatus (1) comprising a light source (5) for emitting light and a collimator (40) for arranging the light emitted in an application specific distribution. The light source comprises (i) a semiconductor device (10) capable of emitting light, (ii) a body (20) having a bottom surface (21) adjacent to the semiconductor device (10) and an opposing top surface (22), and (iii) a reflector (30) positioned adjacent the top surface (22). The light emitting apparatus (1) is characterised in that the reflector (30) has a surface larger than the bottom surface (21) of the body (20). This is especially advantageous for creating a given light beam collimation with a smaller collimator or alternatively for creating a collimator producing a significantly narrower light beam.

  • Publication number: 20100046219
Abstract: A light guide (11; 101; 111) comprising first and second oppositely arranged faces, an in-coupling portion (13a-f) for in-coupling of light from a light-source (12a-f; 95a-f; 102; 106a-c; 112a-f), and an out-coupling portion (15a-f; 103; 113a-f) located adjacent to the in-coupling portion (13a-f). The out-coupling portion (15a-f; 103; 113a-f) is configured to out-couple a primary light beam having a direction of propagation directed from a position in the in-coupling portion (13a-f) with a lower out-coupling efficiency than a secondary light beam having a direction of propagation directed from a position in the light guide (11; 101; 111) outside the in-coupling portion (13a-f).
