    Abstract: An apparatus and method for handling microelectronic workpiece containers. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes a container support having one or more support elements positioned to carry a microelectronic workpiece container. A container securement device is positioned at least proximate to the support element(s). A contact surface of the securement device is moved in a first direction so that it contacts or is positioned to contact a surface of the workpiece container. The contact surface is then moved in a second direction different that the first direction to clamp the workpiece container against the support element(s).

One aspect of the invention is directed toward reaction vessels for electrochemical processing of microelectronic workpieces, processing stations including such reaction vessels, and methods for using these devices. For example, one embodiment of a reaction vessel includes an outer container having an outer wall, a first outlet configured to introduce a primary fluid flow into the outer container, and at least one second outlet configured to introduce a secondary fluid flow into the outer container separate from the primary fluid flow. The reaction vessel can also include at least one electrode, and it can also have a field shaping unit.

This first virtual electrode unit 530 may be exchanged for a second virtual electrode unit 540, without modification of any of the electrodes 600, to adapt the processing chamber 200 for treating a different workpiece.

    Abstract: A system for processing semiconductor wafers has process units on a deck of a frame. The process units and the deck have precision locating features, such as tapered pins, for precisely positioning the process units on the deck. Process units can be removed and replacement process units installed on the deck, without the need for recalibrating the load/unload robot. This reduces the time needed to replace process units and restart processing operations. Liquid chemical consumption during processing is reduced by drawing unused liquid out of supply lines and pumping it back to storage.

    Abstract: Interchangeable workpiece handling apparatuses and associated tools for processing microfeature workpieces are disclosed. In one embodiment, an apparatus includes a device support having a first alignment surface at an alignment plane. A processing chamber is received in an aperture at the alignment plane. A workpiece handling device is positioned proximate to the processing chamber and includes a workpiece support, a drive unit operatively coupled to the workpiece support to move the workpiece support along a generally linear motion axis, and a mounting portion coupled to the workpiece support and having a second alignment surface removably mated with the first alignment surface. In a particular embodiment, the workpiece handling device is supported relative to the device support only at or above the alignment plane. Accordingly, the workpiece handling device can be easily removed from the device support and need not impede access to components beneath the alignment plane.
