  • Patent number: 7879408
Abstract: A method and apparatus for spreading a treating agent, for example, size or a coating onto a moving surface in the manufacture of the web-shaped folios or paper and paperboard and various sheet products in particular, includes feeding the treating agent into at least one feeding chamber and directing the agent from the feeding chamber onto the moving surface. Jets are formed from the treating agent by directing the agent through at least one nozzle plate comprising openings that are defined by the nozzle plate around the entire periphery, and the formed jets are applied directly onto the moving surface.

  • Patent number: 6994771
Abstract: A method for treating a web of paper or board with a wetting substance or calendering the web prior to the cylinder dryer section of a paper- or boardmaking machine while the solids content of the web is still very low, typically in the range of 10–60%, wherein the web can be conveyed when so desired fully supported from the wire section of the paper- or boardmaking machine up to the winder, while simultaneously utilizing the quality benefits obtained from a controlled reduction of the web moisture content and dewatering of the same. The web is conveyed supported by a transfer belt (9) through at least one web surface treatment apparatus such as a coater station (S1B) or a calender prior to passing the web to the first dryer cylinder group (1) of the paper- or boardmaking machine. • Patent number: 6190729
Abstract: A method and apparatus for two-side coating of a light base weight printing paper web containing mechanical pulp or recycled fiber. The first side of a web (5) is coated in a first coating station (1), the coating applied to the first side is dried at least partially in a first dryer unit (3). The second side of the web (5) is coated subsequent to the drying of the first side in a second coating station (2), and the coating applied to the second side is dried at least partially in a second dryer unit (4). • Patent number: 6177137
Abstract: Method and arrangement for coating a web in a film press nip defined by a pair of rotating rolls and through which the web runs and in which a coating agent is applied as a film onto a face of at least one of the rolls and transferred in the nip from the face of the roll(s) onto a respective side of the web to thereby coat the respective side of the web. Steam jets are applied to each side of the web that is being coated to prevent formation of coating-agent mist at a web-outlet side of the nip. The steam jets can be directed from a location after the nip to the web-outlet side of the nip and/or substantially to a point of separation of the web from contact with the roll(s).

  • Patent number: 5567479
Abstract: A method and device for coating of the face of a roll in a film size press with a coating agent by a coating device including a coating doctor that extends across the machine width and is loaded against the face of a roll in the film size press. The coating doctor spreads and smooths the coating agent, which has been introduced into the coating device and applied as a film onto the roll face before the coating doctor in the direction of rotation of the roll. To prevent the formation of streaks in the coating-agent film, in particular of streaks resulting from cavitation, adhesion of coating agent from the coating-agent film to the trailing side of the coating doctor is prevented by keeping the trailing side of the coating doctor moist or wet. Adhering of coating agent to the trailing edge of the coating blade is prevented by feeding a moistening medium as a constant flow to the area of the trailing edge.

  • Patent number: 5484482
Abstract: A method and apparatus for limiting the width of a coating and/or preventing damage to roll ends while coating or surface-sizing paper or an equivalent web material in a coating device in which a coating agent, such as size, coating paste or equivalent, is introduced into the coating device to an application zone defined by a coating member, a moving base, lateral seals, and a front wall and spread onto the moving base by the coating member which is loaded against the moving base. Liquid jets are sprayed into the areas outside the coating width, substantially over the width defined by the lateral seals and the roll ends, either onto the moving base before the coating member in the running direction of the moving base or directly into the nip formed by the moving base and the coating member. The liquid jets lubricate the nip and dilute the coating agent that has entered into the areas outside the coating width.

  • Patent number: 5304391
Abstract: The invention concerns a method for regulation of the moisture profile of a paper or board web in a size press in which the paper or board web (W) is made to run through a nip (N) formed by the rolls (1,2) in the size press. Films (F.sub.1,F.sub.2) of size are applied to the faces (3,4) of the rolls in the size press by means of coating devices (10,20) so that these films (F.sub.1 F.sub.2) of size are transferred onto the paper or board web (W) in the roll nip (N). A size (F.sub.1) of substantially invariable profile is spread onto the face (3) of the first roll in the size press (5), and the profile of the size film (F.sub.2) to be spread onto the face (4) of the second roll is regulated so that the moisture profile of the web (W) at the reel-up can be made substantially invariable. The invention also concerns a film size press for implementing the method.
