  • Patent number: 5303670
Abstract: The invention concerns a device for metering of a coating agent onto a moving base, such as a paper or board web. The device includes first and second soft-faced applicator rolls defining a coating nip, through which nip a web is passed. The first applicator roll is journalled as fixed on a frame of the device, and the second applicator roll is linked to the frame of the device pivotally by the intermediate of a loading arm or the equivalent. At least one of the applicator rolls is in nip contact with a hard transfer roll, which is further in nip contact with a soft-faced metering roll. A pond of coating agent is located in a metering nip between the metering roll and a transfer roll. As the rolls revolve, the coating agent is transferred through the metering nip onto the face of the transfer roll and from there further through a transfer nip formed by the transfer roll and the applicator roll onto the face of the applicator roll.

  • Patent number: 5286526
Abstract: The invention concerns a method for coating of a moving base, such as the face of a back-up roll, paper or board web, or equivalent, with a coating agent. In the method, a blade coater is employed in which a coating blade included in the blade coater and installed in a blade holder is loaded in the area between the blade holder and the tip of the coating blade toward the moving base by means of a loading member. The coating blade forms a substantially small angle in relation to the moving base. The coating quantity applied onto the moving base is regulated by adjusting the blade angle and/or the loading of the coating blade. The coating blade is loaded towards the moving base, in the area between said loading member and the tip of the coating blade.

  • Patent number: 5246497
Abstract: The invention relates to a coating device for coating, e.g. a size-press roll, paper or board or of an equivalent moving base. The coating device comprises a revolving coating bar which rests against a moving base. The coating bar extends across the machine width, and is supported in a cradle substantially over its entire length. The coating bar is fitted to spread and to smooth the coating agent onto the moving base which coating agent is introduced into the coating device in the direction of running of the moving base before the coating bar. The coating bar in accordance with the invention is a smooth bar of large diameter, which is fitted against the moving base so that the profile of coating quantity can be controlled.

  • Patent number: 5162131
Abstract: A method is provided for measuring and regulating the quantity of coating in surface sizing or pigmenting of paper or board, wherein the coating agent is spread by means of a coating device in the form of a film onto the face of a roll in a size press. The film is transferred from the roll face onto the paper or board in the size press nip. A fluorescent marker agent is mixed into the roll coating or into the coating agent and the measurement of the coating quantity is carried out by means of X-ray fluorescence technique from the face of the size press roll before the film of coating agent is transferred onto the web.

  • Patent number: 5159893
Abstract: The invention concerns a method for regulation of the moisture profile of a paper or board web in a size press in which the paper or board web (W) is made to run through a nip (N) formed by the rolls (1,2) in the size press. Films (F.sub.1, F.sub.2) of size are applied to the faces (3,4) of the rolls in the size press by means of coating devices (10,20) so that these films (F.sub.1 F.sub.2) of size are transferred onto the paper or board web (W) in the roll nip (N). A size (F.sub.1) of substantially invariable profile is spread onto the face (3) of the first roll in the size press (5), and the profile of the size film (F.sub.2) to be spread onto the face (4) of the second roll is regulated so that the moisture profile of the web (W) at the reel-up can be made substantially invariable. The invention also concerns a film size press for implementing the method.

  • Patent number: 5122396
Abstract: The invention concerns a device and method for limiting of the width of coating in coating of paper or board. The coating agent is spread onto a moving base to be coated by means of a coating device provided with a grooved coating bar. The coating agent is spread substantially only over the width of the web and any coating agent extending substantially beyond the web width is scraped off the base to be coated with the aid of smooth end areas fitted at both ends of the coating bar. The invention is also related to a device for carrying out the method.

  • Patent number: 4981726
Abstract: Method and apparatus for dispensing coating material on a moving substrate, such as a paper or cardboard web or the surface of a roll or the like, wherein the coating material is introduced into the coating apparatus before a coating nip and applied to the substrate through a slit of the coating apparatus directly onto the surface of the moving substrate. The coating nip and slit of the coating apparatus are formed so that a coating material smoothing member of the coating apparatus is directly supported against the moving substrate in a manner such that the free flow aperture of the slit at the coating nip is confined by the moving substrate and the surface of the smoothing member.

  • Patent number: 4839201
Abstract: Method and apparatus for applying coating liquid onto a moving base, such as paper or board web, the surface of a counter-roll or the like wherein the coating liquid is fed under pressure into a coating liquid chamber of a coating device defined by a coating member, a front wall, edge seals and by a region of the moving base to be coated. In order to seal the front wall of the coating device against the passage of air with respect to the moving base and/or to lubricate the front wall and moving base with respect to each other, a fluid material, such as a liquid, dispersion, solution or the like is fed to an inlet side of the moving base region forward of the base region and front member in the direction of movement of the base so that the fluid material moves substantially parallel to and in the same direction as the moving base.

  • Patent number: 4712506
Abstract: A system for two-sided coating of a running paper web. The device comprises an application device for spreading the coating material over both sides of the web running through a first nip formed by a rotating counter roll and a levelling member.According to the invention, the device includes an auxiliary roll, which is, in the direction of progress of the web, fitted at a certain distance from the first nip and which, together with the counter roll, forms a second nip for the web which has followed along with the said roll over the distance. The diameter of the auxiliary roll is substantially smaller than the diameter of the counter roll, and the face of the auxiliary roll is substantially harder than that of the counter roll. By means of the invention, the risk of damaging the coating at the side of the web facing the roll can be reduced by the web being detached from the second nip formed between the rolls.

  • Patent number: 4543487
Abstract: The invention concerns a procedure and a means for creating an electron curtain (5) intended to be used in irradiating a surface (8) and adjustable as to its intensity distribution. The electron curtain is elicited by producing with an elongated filament (2) placed in a chamber (1), free electrons in a space (6) surrounding the filament, by accelerating the electrons by means of an electrode structure (3) confining the space and by directing the electron curtain formed by the accelerated electrons out from the chamber through a window (4) permeable to electrons in its wall.

  • Patent number: 4458360
Abstract: The invention concerns a procedure for measuring the coating quantities contained in coating layers deposited on both sides of paper, cardboard or equivalent material in the case in which both coating layers contain the same component emitting characteristic radiation. In the case most commonly encountered, both coating layers consist of the same coating material. In the procedure two functionally mutually independent radiation source/detector pairs are used, between which the coated paper or equivalent is placed. Separately each radiation source/detector pair effects excitation of fluorescent radiation in both coating layers under measurement and the total intensity of the excited radiation present at the detector is measured. If the base weight of the paper or equivalent is known, the coating rates are calculable from the results of measurement obtained. The base weight is most advantageously measured before the coating step with the aid of a separate source of radiation and a transmission detector.

  • Patent number: 4377869
Abstract: The invention concerns a procedure for measurement of the material quantities in coating layers applied upon a base material, by utilizing x-ray radiation. The procedure is particularly suited for use in a paper or cardboard manufacturing process wherein onto a material web in continuous motion are applied by steps one or several coating courses. The radiation source and detector are both placed on one side of the moving web, and the procedure is based on measurement of the fluorescence radiation excited by the primary x-ray radiation obtained from the radiation source in the material underlying the coating layer that is to be measured. The primary and secondary radiation both are thereby compelled to pass through the coating layer under measurement before the arrival of the fluorescence radiation at the detector.
