  • Patent number: 6055786
Abstract: A roofing membrane heat seal indicator provides a positive, visually perceptible indication that a joint or seam has been raised to a sufficiently high temperature to achieve a proper seal. The heat seal indicator is applied adjacent and parallel to an edge of a roofing membrane which will be arranged on a roof to form the upper (exposed) surface of an overlapping membrane seam. As the adjacent surfaces of the overlapped membranes are heated, heat passes through the membrane to the heat seal indicator. The heat seal indicator may be a temperature sensitive ink pigmented with material that changes color upon being subjected to a temperature indicating that the membrane surface has been subjected to a sufficiently high temperature to achieve an appropriate seal. Alternatively, the indicator may be an adhered layer of a ground or flaked polymer, such as polyethylene, which is initially opaque but melts to become translucent, thereby indicating obtainment of a proper sealing temperature.

  • Patent number: 6055877
Abstract: A power seat track motor assembly controls motion of a seat in a vehicle. The power seat track motor assembly has a motor that has a first axis of rotation, a gear box having gears that turn in response to rotation of the motor, and a threaded screw that turns in response to turning of the gears in the gear box. The threaded screw has a second axis of rotation that is substantially parallel to the first axis of rotation of the motor so that forces imposed on the screw substantially by-pass the motor and gear box. The assembly also has a threaded structure including a threaded hole through which the threaded screw is threadably inserted. Either the threaded screw or the threaded structure is integral with or mechanically linked to the seat, so that rotation of the threaded screw relative to the threaded hole causes the seat to move. The threaded screw is in compression during normal operation so as to bear the forces that are imposed on the screw to substantially by-pass the motor and gear box.

  • Patent number: 6058133
Abstract: A cylindrical graphite electrode with a consumable end includes one or more slots comprising a discontinuous portion of the carbon which extend along the length of the carbon body through at least a portion of the cross-section substantially to the consumable end. The slot may extend from the surface into the body or the slot may extend within the body below the surface. The slot may be filled with a carbonaceous material different from the carbon of the body. The slot may extend helically along the length and around a portion of the periphery of the body. The slots may be formed prior to or after heat treating of the electrode. As the electrode is exposed to a thermal shock, a crack is initiated in and propagates along the electrode and intersects with the slot, wherein substantial further growth of the crack is arrested at the slot.

  • Patent number: 6058490
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for providing scalable layers of highly available applications using loosely coupled commercially available computers. The software running on the loosely coupled computers is divided into three layers: the system layer, the platform layer, and the application layer, each having its own process group activation and fault recovery strategy. A process group contains software processes that depend upon a set of resources common to the process group. In addition to depending upon a common set of resources, processes within a process group share a fault recovery strategy. Fault recovery is performed at the process group level, such that if one process within a process group fails, fault recovery is takes place for all processes within the process group. In the preferred embodiment, an application layer process group may be paired with another application layer process group on a separate computer.

  • Patent number: 6057997
Abstract: A circuit breaker responds to sputtering arc faults by counting the times that a bandwidth limited di/dt signal exceeds a threshold magnitude within a selected time interval. In the exemplary circuit breaker, if the threshold is exceeded twice within a one second interval, a trip solenoid is energized. The di/dt sensor can share a sensing coil with a ground fault detector. Alternatively, the resistance of the neutral lead within the circuit breaker is utilized to sense current which is converted to a bandwidth limited di/dt signal for level detection and counting of sputtering arc events.

  • Patent number: 6056678
Abstract: An arm curl exercise apparatus is provided. The arm curl exercise apparatus includes a selectable weight mechanism and an inpact lever mechanisms operatively connected thereto. A pair of four bar linkage mechanisms are connected to the free end of the input lever. A pair of handles are rotationally connected to the forward most bar component of the four-bar linkage mechanisms such that the handles follow the same pivoting movement as the forward most bar component, when the four bar linkage mechanisms are pivoted. When utilizing the rotatably mounted handles the user is able to maintain the proper biomechanical alignment of the joints while choosing from a variety of grips. The paths through which the four-bar linkage mechanisms travel enable the handles to travel along a slightly curvilinear upwardly converging and downwardly diverging path which simulates as natural a human musculoskeletal arm curl motion as possible.
