    Abstract: A block suitable for use in a retaining wall, the block has a top surface, a bottom surface, a front surface, a rear surface, and opposed sides. The block includes a weakened section that extends substantially from the front to the rear surface, and which is configured and arranged to facilitate splitting the block into two smaller blocks. The weakened section can take the form of one or more slots that are generally situated within the body of the block and one or more grooves located at the front and rear surfaces, respectively. The groove at the front surface of the block is configured and arranged to simulate a joint between two adjacent blocks. Preferably, the front groove is formed by a core that modifies the block as it is removed from the mold in which it was cast. The block may include one or more projections and/or positioning elements that extend from the block in a generally vertical direction, and which are configured and arranged to engage a block in an adjacent course of blocks.

    Abstract: A block texturing apparatus (10) and method for forming a block with a textured surface. The block texturing apparatus (10) has a body (20) with a front surface (22), a rear surface (24), a top surface (26), a bottom surface (30), and opposing side surfaces (36, 38). The front surface (22) has a block modifying section (40) that occupies at least twenty percent of the front surface (22) of the body (20). In operation, the block texturing apparatus (10) is used in conjunction with or in lieu of a wall of a mold (70). The mold (70) is than filled with a mixture of block material (90) that is compressed in the mold (70) to form a block (94). The block (94) is then stripped from the mold (70). As the block (94) is removed, the block modifying section (40) manipulates a surface of a block (94) and imparts an irregular texture (96) thereto.

    Abstract: A block for use in constructing a retaining wall having a bottom with a non-planar portion which creates a gap between the bottom surface and the top surface of a lower course of similar blocks when the block is placed thereon. This gap assists the block in resting on the lower course of blocks in a stable, level manner by providing a space where small amounts of rubble and dirt may exist without interfering with the stacking of the blocks. The non-planar, preferably concave, portion is also advantageous in that it reduces the unit weight of the block without significantly affecting the structural integrity of the block. Preferably, the block's bottom surface further comprises a plurality of grooves which further reduce the weight of the block and provide additional clearance in the gap for larger stones.

    Abstract: A forms engine allows data sharing between customizable on-line forms, such as college admissions applications. Before applying, an applicant opens an account with a third party application servicer. After the applicant completes an application for one institution, the data is saved in a data base and automatically populates fields in subsequent application forms. The form for each institution is created from a form description file. Each form is branded for its institution and forms for different institutions differ in appearance and content so that the presence of the third party servicer is transparent to the applicant. The system is extensible without programming, allowing new applicant attributes to be readily incorporated into the system and allowing the content and appearance of the application to be readily changed by changing the description file.
