  • Patent number: 8527218
Abstract: The different advantageous embodiments provide a method and apparatus for inspecting a structure. In one advantageous embodiment, an electromagnetic force is generated on a portion of a bond line for a plurality of parts in the structure. The structure contains a conductive material. A determination is made as to whether an inconsistency is present in the portion of the bond line after generating the electromagnetic force on the portion of the bond line.

  • Patent number: 8517974
Abstract: A valve assembly for adjusting the flow of bodily fluid from one part of a human body to another includes a body portion having a flow inlet and a flow outlet. A valve located in a flow path from the inlet to the outlet includes a valve seat and a closing element that is adapted to seal against the valve seat. A carrier element is mounted within the body portion and has a plurality of pockets. Each pocket houses a respective preload element, wherein each preload element is of a different weight from that of the other preload elements. The carrier element is moveable relative to the body portion so as to align a preload element of a desired weight with the closing element. The self weight of the chosen preload element applies a preload to the closing element dependent on the orientation of the valve assembly.

  • Publication number: 20130208391
Abstract: The spiral pulse transducer generates or transduces pulses by directing an electrical pulse around an electrically conducting ring. An effective way to do this is to direct it inwardly along a spiral, which can generally intensify the pulse and make it more unidirectional. While a principal embodiment is intended to help reduce blood pressure, this transducer might be used for medical, commercial, agricultural, or industrial processes.

  • Patent number: 8505689
Abstract: An outdoor support strap for holding a user in a squatted position above the ground surface while defecating preferably includes a flexible and elongated body suitably sized and shaped to be positioned around a user's waist while being anchored to a support surface such as a tree. The body is preferably formed from an elastic material such that it remains deformably resilient for providing a resistive force against the user's waist. In this manner, the user is able to lean away from the support surface and assume a squatted a position to thereby extend his or her legs forwardly of his or her buttocks. Such a support strap alleviates the strain and energy required to maintain a squatted position for an extended period of time. By using the support strap, the user's hands remain free to hold objects or cleanse the buttocks area with toilet paper for example.

  • Publication number: 20130161368
Abstract: A non-contact dancer mechanism for conveying a web of brittle material includes a guide rail and a variable position web support plenum adjustably positioned on the guide rail. The variable position web support plenum may include an arcuate outer surface with a plurality of fluid vents for emitting a fluid to support the web of brittle material over and spaced apart from the arcuate outer surface thereby preventing mechanical contact and damage to the web of brittle material. A support plenum counterbalance may be mechanically coupled to the variable position web support plenum, wherein the support plenum counterbalance supports at least a portion of the weight of the variable position web support plenum on the guide rail. Apparatuses incorporating the non-contact dancer mechanism and methods for using the non-contact dancer mechanism for handling continuous webs of brittle material are also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20130166221
Abstract: A method and system are provided for evaluating the correlation between sequences by entering segments of one sequence in a database and comparing segments of the other sequence with the index values to find correlated segments. The correlated segments are analysed to determine whether the spacing is within a defined range indicating that a correlation threshold has been met. A processing methodology may be employed whereby a coarse potential alignment algorithm is first applied to determine potential alignment at a plurality of potential alignment positions, which are filtered based on alignment scores, and a fine alignment algorithm is then applied.

  • Publication number: 20130050767
Abstract: As set forth herein, methods and systems for automated image defect detection. An input image is subjected to skew detection and contaminant detection. Upon detection of skew of and/or contaminants in the image data, correction data, including indicia of the contaminants/skew, correction angles and directions are calculated and displayed on an electronic representation of the document. Automatic correction may then be performed to correct the detected defects, allow the defects to remain, or re-scan the original document to generate new image data without the detected defects.

  • Publication number: 20130050741
Abstract: An imaging forming system and method are disclosed having a print engine, a signal detector and a communication module for communicating with portable devices and printing documents therefrom. A user intent to print from a portable device is ascertained based on a signal strength of each portable device. The signal strength detected determines when each portable device is within a proximate area of the system. If a portable device is within the proximate area for a predetermined period of time, the system operates to print the document.

  • Patent number: 8374552
Abstract: Testing a plurality of communication devices. A plurality of signals may be received from the plurality of communication devices. The plurality of signals may include a signal from each of the plurality of communication devices, where a first subset of the plurality of signals has a different frequency than a second subset of the plurality of signals. The received signals may be combined into a combined signal. The combined signal may be downconverted to a combined signal, e.g., by mixing the combined signal with an output from at least one local oscillator. The downconverting may generate a plurality of lower frequency signals, each corresponding to one of the plurality of received signals. Testing may be performed on each of the plurality of lower frequency signals.

  • Patent number: 8359924
Abstract: A method and apparatus for testing a bond interface is provided. An initial wave is transmitted into a first end of a first material. The first material is connected to a second material by an adhesive at a bond interface. The first material is dissimilar to the second material. The initial wave splits into a first wave and a second wave at the bond interface. Parameters are changed so a first wave travels through the first material to the first end of the first material and back to the bond interface in a first amount of time and the second wave travels through the second material to a second end of the second material and back to the bond interface in a second amount of time. The first amount of time is substantially equal to the second amount of time. A tension is obtained in the adhesive at the bond interface.

  • Patent number: 8342017
Abstract: A method for repeatably fabricating a test specimen assembly comprising a pair of fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) test specimens adhesively bonded together, the bonded joint having respective areas of substantially different, but consistent variable adhesive bond strengths suitable as a calibration standard. The method comprises fabricating a first FRP test specimen having a bonding surface with first and second areas that have substantially different bonded joint performance-governing characteristics and then using adhesive to bond the bonding surface of the first FRP test specimen to the bonding surface of a second FRP test specimen. The different bonded joint performance-governing characteristics are achieved by treating first and second areas of the surface of the first FRP test specimen using different respective surface preparation techniques.

  • Patent number: 8332165
Abstract: A method and apparatus for identifying features for an object. Response signals are received in response to sending signals into an object at locations using a measurement system. A first matrix is formed. Each entry in the first matrix contains an amplitude of a response signal for a location and time at which the response signal was received with respect to when a corresponding signal was sent into the object. The first matrix is decomposed into a second matrix and third matrix such that a product of the second and third matrices represents the first matrix. A number of columns in the second matrix corresponds to a number of features for the object. A number of rows in the third matrix corresponds to a number of sets of weighting factors for the number of features. Information is identified about the features in the object using the second and third matrices.
