  • Publication number: 20020174306
Abstract: A storage provisioning policy is created by specifying storage heuristics for storage attributes using storage heuristic metadata. Storage attributes characterize a storage device and storage heuristic metadata describe how to specify a storage heuristic. Using the storage heuristic metadata, storage heuristics are defined to express a rule or constraint as a function of a storage attribute. In addition, the storage provisioning policy may also specify mapping rules for exporting the storage to a consumer of the storage, such as the server or server cluster.

  • Publication number: 20020156987
Abstract: In a storage server on a storage area network, a media unit manager manages disk space in a manner transparent to the host computers. The media unit manager uses media units corresponding to the physical storage devices on the storage area network to build higher-level media units. The higher level media units can have the attributes of being sliced, concatenated, mirrored, striped, etc. Thus, the host computers need not be aware of the specific physical storage devices themselves, reducing the management and reconfiguration burden on the host computers when storage devices are added to or removed from the storage area network.

  • Patent number: 6434644
Abstract: A system and method for communicating information between an information handling system and a peripheral device of the information handling system are disclosed. A processor is coupled to a bus for carrying information provided by the processor, and a host controller coupled to the bus receives the information and sends the information to the peripheral device according to a first communications standard. A peripheral device controller coupled to the host controller converts the information from the first communications standard to a second communications standard and transmits the information to the peripheral device in accordance with the second communications standard interpretable by the peripheral device. Control information is generated and sent to a peripheral device controller according to a first communications standard. The control information is converted from the first communication standard to a second communication standard and transmitted to the peripheral.

  • Publication number: 20020029319
Abstract: A system with a RAID controller connected to a plurality of hosts, and having a storage area configurable as a plurality of logical units. The RAID controller stores in an associated memory a table of access rights for the hosts to the logical units. Updates can be provided and additional material can be provided in new memory space that is subsequently made available to the various hosts by providing updated access rights that include the new space. In one embodiment, the present invention also maps the logical unit number from that requested by the host to an actual number used in the RAID subsystem.

  • Patent number: 6293530
Abstract: A vibration control system utilizes a liquid spring filled with a compressible liquid. In its most general embodiment, the vibration control system minimizes the transmission of vibration between a first mass and a second mass, i.e vehicle frame/vehicle cabin, structure/ground, machinery/platform. The liquid spring can be either a passive or an active system. An active system utilizes a second volume of compressible fluid. A passive system only uses a single volume of fluid. Further, the liquid spring can provide either spring force or both spring and damping forces. Alternatively, a single volume liquid spring can be utilized in conjunction with a conventional damper.
