  • Publication number: 20150241354
Abstract: A system and method for creating a buffer solution having a desired pH value is disclosed. The method uses two known buffer solutions, each with predetermined pH values, and determines a mathematical relationship which defines the amount of each known buffer solution needed to create the buffer solution with the desired pH. This method can then be used to create one or more denaturation graphs, which demonstrate the stability of a protein at a given pH level.

  • Patent number: 9042367
Abstract: A system and method for synchronizing the phases and frequencies of devices in multi-user, wireless communications systems are provided. A primary beacon signal is transmitted by a destination node in a wireless communications network to a plurality of source nodes. Secondary beacon signals are also exchanged between the source nodes. Using the primary and secondary beacon signals, the nodes generate local phase and frequency estimates which are used to control local phases and frequencies of the source nodes. The source nodes then transmit common information to the destination at carrier frequencies based on the estimated local frequencies and phases, so that the phases and frequencies of the transmitted information are synchronized to facilitate coherent combining of the bandpass signals at the destination. Phase and frequency synchronization can be applied to wireless communications systems having any number of source nodes, and effects of Doppler shifts and moving platforms are accounted for.

  • Patent number: 9029163
Abstract: A system and method for creating a plurality of denaturation curves is disclosed. In accordance with certain embodiments, one variable, such as salt content, pH or another parameter, is varied to create a plurality of different buffer solutions. • Publication number: 20150061284
Abstract: An expansion joint spring clip can eliminate flutter, pulsations and reverse bending on non-metallic fabric flue duct expansion joints. The expansion joint spring clip can hold the expansion joint in a fixed arch such that it can still perform its function with regard to accommodating the ducting system movements. The expansion joint spring clip allows the entire width of the non-metallic expansion joint to retain its position during start-ups, downloading and during full or partial boiler, kiln, furnace loads and the like. The expansion joint spring clip can be installed in the existing geometry of an expansion joint by producing an arch while not damaging the expansion joint after being installed. The expansion joint can still accommodate axial and limited lateral movements, allowing the expansion joint to perform its function.

  • Patent number: 8859295
Abstract: A system and method for determining the dissociation constant for a particular ligand is disclosed. In accordance with certain embodiments, the method creates a chemical denaturation curve of a protein in the absence of the ligand. A particular point is selected from this curve, such as the point at which 90% of the protein is unfolded. The molarity of chemical denaturant is determined for this selected point. A one point test is then performed for the protein with a predetermined concentration of the particular ligand. The fraction of protein which is unfolded at this point is then used to determine the dissociation constant for the ligand. This constant is used to quickly determine whether a particular ligard is well suited to be considered a potential drug candidate against that protein target.

  • Patent number: 8791034
Abstract: A chemical vapor deposition method for forming an aluminum-silicon nitride layer upon a substrate uses an aluminum precursor, a silicon precursor and a nitrogen precursor under chemical vapor deposition conditions to deposit the aluminum-silicon nitride layer upon the substrate. The aluminum-silicon nitride layer has an index of refraction interposed between silicon nitride and aluminum nitride. The aluminum-silicon nitride layer also has a bandgap from about 4.5 to about 6 eV and a permittivity from about 6×10^-11 to about 8×10^-11 F/m. The aluminum-silicon nitride layer may be further thermally annealed to reduce a hydrogen content of the aluminum-silicon nitride layer.
