Publication number: 20160221846Abstract: A process for treating feedwater with a microfiltration or ultrafiltration membrane unit and a downstream reverse osmosis unit. An aluminum salt coagulant is added and mixed with the feedwater upstream of a membrane separation unit. An aluminum salt coagulant is added and mixed with the wastewater upstream of the membrane separation unit. The membrane separation unit produces a permeate that is directed to the reverse osmosis membrane. The concentration of aluminum in the permeate is controlled by controlling the hydraulic residence time for aluminum salt reaction products in a concentrate loop associated with the membrane separation unit.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 5, 2016Publication date: August 4, 2016Applicant: Veolia Water Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Stanton R. Publication number: 20140262253Abstract: A method of recovering oil from an oil well includes recovering an oil-water mixture from the oil well and separating produced water from the oil-water mixture. Thereafter, the produced water is directed through a ceramic membrane that removes free oil and emulsified oil from the produced water. The method or process further includes cleaning the ceramic membrane in online and offline modes. In the offline mode, cleaning is achieved by periodically backflushing the ceramic membrane with an aqueous media having a pH of 13 or greater and a temperature of 60° C. or greater. Further, the ceramic membrane is cleaned in the offline mode by applying the following operations. In one or more clean-in-place operations, an aqueous alkaline media at a pH of 13 or higher and a temperature of 60° C. or higher is directed through the ceramic membrane. In one or more clean-in-place operations, the ceramic membrane is also cleaned with an aqueous acidic media that contains dissolved citric acid.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 10, 2014Publication date: September 18, 2014Applicant: Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies North America, Inc.Inventors: Richard Higgins, Stanton R. Patent number: 8707876Abstract: A design and method of operation for the floor of solid fuel boilers is described. The combustion region includes a stepped-floor that improves combustion in the lower furnace. In some embodiments, the fuel is moved between the steps of the floor by a gas, rather than by mechanical means, and the fuel is moved from an upper to a lower step as it is burned. In some embodiments, the steps are fixed steps having a layer of a refractory material.Type: GrantFiled: September 10, 2009Date of Patent: April 29, 2014Inventors: Daniel Richard Higgins, Eugene Sullivan

Patent number: 8590463Abstract: A system for drying solid fuels prior to injection and burning in solid fuel boilers is described. High moisture content solid fuels such as bark, sludge, wet coal, are preferably dried to some degree before they can burn. The present invention incorporates a delivery chute in which combustion gases dry the solid fuel before it reaches the combustion chamber of the boiler. In one embodiment, the combustion gases are drawn through the delivery chute to remove moisture from the incoming fuel and then the gases flow back into the boiler. A second embodiment directly exposes the wet fuel to the combustion in the boiler for a sufficient time to remove a substantial amount of moisture before the fuel is spread onto the solid fuel combustion region.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 2009Date of Patent: November 26, 2013Inventors: Daniel Richard Higgins, Eugene Sullivan

Patent number: 8424150Abstract: An improved apparatus for cleaning linearly translating rods is described. Embodiments of the invention are suitable for use where a rod, such as a cleaning rod, is moved linearly through a stationary support, generally a cylindrical tube, such as a pneumatic cylinder, with bushings fixed inside the tube through which the rod slides. Preferred embodiments of the present invention allow the rod scraper to be attached or removed without disassembling the complete hydraulic cylinder rod apparatus. Preferred embodiments of the present invention also allow the rod scraper to float radially while its motion is constrained axially. This allows the invention to compensate for lateral displacement of a translating cylindrical cleaning rod due to normal working clearances between the cleaning rod and bushings or by bushing wear over time.Type: GrantFiled: June 11, 2010Date of Patent: April 23, 2013Inventors: Daniel Richard Higgins, Michael J. Kranda

Patent number: 8316185Abstract: A cached memory system that can handle high-rate input data and ensure that an embedded DSP can meet real-time constraints is described. The cached memory system includes a cache memory located close to a processor core, an on-chip memory at the next higher memory level, and an external main memory at the topmost memory level. A cache controller handles paging of instructions and data between the cache memory and the on-chip memory for cache misses. A direct memory exchange (DME) controller handles user-controlled paging between the on-chip memory and the external memory. A user/programmer can arrange to have the instructions and data required by the processor core to be present in the on-chip memory well in advance of when they are actually needed by the processor core.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 2010Date of Patent: November 20, 2012Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Gilbert Christopher Sih, Charles E. Patent number: 7873397Abstract: Innovative techniques that result in a better signal-to-noise ratio for spectrographic analysis of substances in a target than conventional techniques. In these techniques, light illuminates a target with at least some of the light penetrating the target. At least a portion of the light that penetrates the target is collected from a region on the target's surface that is not directly illuminated. Preferably, at least a majority of the collected light is light that penetrates the target. Also preferably, the light that illuminates the target is in a pattern that partially but not completely surrounds the region from which the portion of the light that penetrates the target is collected. A spectrum of at least a portion of the collected light is analyzed.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 2007Date of Patent: January 18, 2011Inventors: Richard Higgins, Betty Lise Anderson

Patent number: 7343005Abstract: The present invention is drawn to a method and apparatus for taking advantage of the always-on nature of a broadband VoIP network connection to provide enhanced services triggered by the off-hook event, bypassing a dial tone. In use, a caller triggers a network based greeting upon the off-hook event of picking up the phone. The greeting can be used for unique branding purposes by speaking a greeting to the caller. After the greeting, the caller can be immediately connected to an array of network-based services. A voice recognition system is employed to permit the caller to use voice dialing. A network interactive voice response unit (VRU) is used with the voice recognition system to allow the user to access services from a menu. The VRU can respond to an affirmative statement from the caller by using a table to lookup the phone number of requested services closest to the caller based on the caller's phone number (i.e., ANI).Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 2002Date of Patent: March 11, 2008Assignee: Time Warner Cable, a division of Time Warner Entertainment Company, L.P.Inventor: Richard Higgins
