    Abstract: A diesel engine includes an exhaust system having a particulate filter made from a porous material having a mean pore diameter of from 5 ?m to 40 ?m, a porosity of at least 40% and a bulk volumetric heat capacity of at least 0.50 J cm?3 K?1 at 500° C. The filter includes a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) located in a first catalyst zone on the front end of the filter and at least one catalyst zone located downstream thereof, for oxidizing carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen monoxide. The engine includes engine management means, in use, to provide continuously or intermittently an exhaust gas having sufficient nitrogen oxides or hydrocarbon and/or an exhaust gas of sufficiently high temperature to combust particulate matter. The platinum group metal (PGM) loading in the first catalyst zone is greater than the total PGM loading in the at least one downstream catalyst zone.

    Abstract: SCR-active molecular-sieve based catalysts with improved low-temperature performance are made by heating a molecular-sieve in a non-oxidizing atmosphere with steam (hydrothermal treatment), or in a reducing atmosphere without steam (thermal treatment), at a temperature in the range of 600-900° C. for a time period from 5 minutes to two hours. The resulting SCR-active iron-containing molecular sieves exhibit a selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides with NH3 or urea at 250° C. that is at least 50% greater than if the iron-containing molecular-sieve were calcined at 500° C. for two hours without performing the hydrothermal or thermal treatment.

    Abstract: A NOx trap, and its use in an exhaust system for internal combustion engines, is disclosed. The NOx trap comprises a substrate and three layers on the substrate. The first layer comprises a first platinum group metal, a first NOx storage component, and a first support; the second layer comprises a second platinum group metal, a second NOx storage component, and a second support; and the third layer comprises rhodium and a third support. The platinum group metal loading in the first layer is from 1 to 40 percent of the platinum group metal loading in the second layer. In addition, the first NOx storage component and the second NOx storage component are the same, and the first support and the second support are the same. The NOx trap is less prone to deactivation over numerous desulfation/NOx trap regeneration cycles.
