  • Patent number: 7226429
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for using lectins that bind to pathogens having high mannose surface glycoproteins or fragments thereof which contain high mannose glycoproteins, to remove them from infected blood or plasma in an extracorporeal setting. Accordingly, the present invention provides a method for reducing viral load in an individual comprising the steps of obtaining blood or plasma from the individual, passing the blood or plasma through a porous hollow fiber membrane wherein lectin molecules are immobilized within the porous exterior portion of the membrane, collecting pass-through blood or plasma and reinfusing the pass-through blood or plasma into the individual.

  • Publication number: 20070119199
Abstract: According to one embodiment of the invention, a cooling system for a heat-generating structure that is disposed in an environment having an ambient pressure comprises a fluid coolant and three structures. The first structure allows the heat generating structure to removably couple to the cooling system. The second structure reduces a pressure of the fluid coolant to a subambient pressure at which the fluid coolant has a boiling temperature less than a temperature of the heat-generating structure. The third structure directs a flow of the fluid coolant in the form of a liquid at the subambient pressure in a manner causing the fluid coolant to be brought into thermal communication with the heat-generating structure where heat from the heat-generating structure causes the fluid coolant in the form of the liquid to boil and vaporize so that the fluid coolant absorbs heat from the heat-generating structure as the fluid coolant changes state.

  • Publication number: 20070119569
Abstract: A redundant assembly for an air and liquid cooled module is provided. The redundant cooling assembly comprises an air and liquid cooled module having a cold plate in thermal communication with a side attached auxiliary drawer. The auxiliary drawer houses a heat exchanger, a liquid pump with piping such that the heat exchanger, the liquid pump with piping and the cold plate form a closed liquid cooling loop. The auxillary drawer also housing an air moving device such that air can readily pass through the air moving device and the heat exchanger in order to provide air cooling. In one embodiment of the invention, fins are disposed on the cold plate to provide cooling in case the pump or the air moving device or both encounter a failure. In alternate embodiments, multiple pumps and/or multiple air moving devices can be used with or without the cold plate fins to provide redundancies.

  • Publication number: 20070119667
Abstract: The apparatus of the present invention provides a brake rotor assembly. The brake rotor assembly includes a generally annular rotor having a frictional surface and a radially inner rotor flange defining a plurality of rotor teeth. The brake rotor assembly also includes a hub section integrally formed onto the rotor. The hub section has a peripheral hub flange configured to engage the plurality of rotor teeth and thereby prevent rotation of the hub section relative to the rotor. The rotor is preferably composed of a first material such as steel or cast iron, and the hub section is preferably composed of a second material such as aluminum or magnesium that is lighter by volume than the first material. Accordingly, the overall weight of the rotor assembly is less than that of a comparable rotor assembly composed entirely of steel or cast iron.
