  • Patent number: 6697734
Abstract: A system and method is provided for displaying a digital map simultaneously having two scales. The digital map includes a detail area having a first scale located in a substantially central portion of the map and an object area having a second scale located in a peripheral portion of the map. Objects are shown in the object area in orientations related to the detail area. The objects represent geographic locations of interest and may also represent landmarks and other prominent features. In one embodiment, the digital map is displayed on a mobile device. The digital map, including either or both areas, may be modified by a user to show different scales. The objects of the map may also be modified. The map may include a location indicator to represent a location of interest, which may be a user's current location.

  • Publication number: 20030229595
Abstract: A technique for charging of network access and/or services includes sending a request for least one of network access or services from the user to a network other than the user's home network. A payment request is sent from the network to the user in response to the user's request for the least one of network access and/or services, and a payment information is sent from the user in response to the network's sent payment request. A receipt of a payment is then sent to the user and/or the network in response to the sent user's payment information and a payment confirmation may then be sent from the user to the network in response to the third party wallet's receipt of the payment. The network provides the requested at least one of the network access and/or service to the user upon receiving the payment confirmation of the corresponding at least one of the network access and/or service.

  • Publication number: 20030222913
Abstract: An aspect of the present invention provides methods and apparatus for supporting a user interface of a terminal. The user interface enables the user to manipulate display objects on a display of the user interface in order to download software objects of other users, execute software objects of the user or of other users, and share software objects with other users. In an embodiment of the invention, the display is partitioned into three areas comprising a users data area, an applications area, and another user's data area. The user can drag a display object between the user's data area and the other user's data area in order to download or publish a corresponding software object. Also, the user can drag a display object from either the user's data area or the other user's data area to the application area in order to execute or view the corresponding software object.

  • Publication number: 20030156146
Abstract: The invention relates to a mobile device comprising a display. In order to offer a user a more extensive immediate overview over the information available to a specific topic, it is proposed that the mobile device comprises processing means for presenting on the display a three-dimensional polyhedron as graphical user interface. Different pieces of information that are to be presented to a user of the mobile device are associated to different facets of this polyhedron, and the visible facets of the polyhedron present at least a hint on a respectively associated piece of information to a user of the mobile device. It is further proposed that the mobile device comprises means for enabling a user to cause the processing means to rotate the facets of the presented polyhedron. The invention relates equally to a corresponding graphical user interface and to a corresponding method for presenting such a graphical user interface.

  • Patent number: 6559872
Abstract: A method for selecting an object in a two-dimensional display using a one-dimensional input device includes displaying a selector circle on the display and increasing or decreasing the radius of the selector circle until the perimeter of the circle coincides with the object on the display.

  • Publication number: 20030011467
Abstract: A system and method for enabling a wireless terminal to access and operate ubiquitous devices (“UDs”), such as televisions, DVD players, etc. The system comprises a server coupled to access points and UDs via a LAN or a WLAN. Each access point is associated with both a map of an associated area and an overlay indicating the location of the UDs within that area. In response to wireless terminal requests relayed by an access point, the server retrieves the map and overlay associated with the access point, and transmits that data to the terminal for display. Alternatively, a list of UDs may be transmitted. Selection of a UD from the display causes an image of the UD's control panel to be displayed, from which the device may be remotely controlled by the user. A mechanism is also provided to permit users to display maps of areas other than the one in which the user is currently located to permit remote control of UDs in such areas.

  • Patent number: 6452544
Abstract: A system and method for displaying map data to a person using either a hand-held or head-worn display is described. In one preferred system, a head-worn display is used. The location of the person and the direction of the person's view is determined. A map image indicated by the location and direction is presented in the display. This map image is displayed in a three-dimensional perspective view, allowing the person to easily associate the objects in the map image with the real objects in the person's field of view. In addition, the user may indicate a desired destination and the three-dimensional perspective view will be changed according to the user's location relative to the desired destination.

  • Publication number: 20020095333
Abstract: Advertising messages are provided to mobile terminals of those users identified by user information as meeting certain criteria, such as users fitting particular user profiles and/or users located in a particular desired location. The content of the advertising messages is dynamically generated based on the number of mobile terminals to whom the advertising message is to be sent and the advertising message is sent to the identified mobile terminals over a mobile network or a short range communication signal. In the latter case, location information may be sent to the mobile terminal along with an advertising message. Where the content of an advertising message comprises an electronic coupon, the value of the coupon depends on the number of mobile terminals to whom the advertising message is to be sent. A mobile terminal user can redeem an electronic coupon by transmitting it from his mobile terminal to a coupon redemption terminal.

  • Publication number: 20020077060
Abstract: In a mobile communication system, a method and system for obtaining location-dependent services information by using a mobile station. An information beacon containing services information pertaining to the location of the beacon is disposed in an environment. The beacon is capable of communicating with the mobile station when the mobile station is located within the operating range of the beacon. The mobile station includes a services access key which, when selected while the mobile station is within the operating range of the beacon, will transmit a query to the beacon requesting location-based services. In response to the query, location-based services information will be transmitted to the mobile station.

  • Publication number: 20020077830
Abstract: A process for activating speech recognition in a terminal includes automatically activating speech recognition when the terminal is used and turning the speech recognition off after a time period has elapsed after activation. The process also takes the context of the terminal into account when the terminal is activated and defines a subset of allowable voice commands which correspond to the current context of the device.
